I think when Usopp's Haki Awakens , its not Haki but it devil fruit powers.

People forget that Usopp is an average guy in a sea of monsters. And as a simple man he is actually top of the top. He doesn't have mutations, DFs, cybernetics or anything else. He is Koby as a pirate. But for some reason people praise Koby and laugh at Usopp

Honestly, I have seen the opposite, I have seen more people shit at Koby for being weak and way too much behind Luffy than I did people who hate Usopp, most of what I see surrounding Usopp are jokes of people saying how Go D. Usopp is top of the verse and can solo everyone else except for his great nemesis Buggy D. Clown (but I unironically want a fight between Usopp and Buggy so god damn bad, it has the potential for some incredible comedic genius especially since both characters NEVER saw each other and only know the other by reputation. And if Usopp beats a Yonko by himself then he 100% would have the second highest bounty of the crew, just imagine the comedic genius that would be to see Zoro and Sanji's reaction to this)

What I find the most fascinating about Usopp is that he's the only member of the crew who has actually reached his goal even if he himself isn't aware of it. He wants to be a brave warrior of the sea, bravery isn't the same as being fearless, bravery is FACING YOUR FEARS and Usopp does that every single time to clutch for his crew. Imho Usopp already is a brave warrior of the sea even if he doesn't know it.

Except this is exactly why Usopp has yet to achieve his dream. See, his whole character is about his own insecurities and he can only achieve his dreams when he himself believes he is a brave warrior of the sea. He needs to learn to accept himself for who he is. We see this part way with Peronna when instead of becoming confident and positive, he embraces his own negativity and cowardice, which leads him to being cautious and strategic. But he has yet to fully accept his value and his bravery. We see this in his reaction when people started calling him god Usopp, he clearly doesn't believe in that title nor any other titles he has given himself in his lies. He needs to genuinely regard himself highly without it being a lie for his dream to be achieved.

Usopp's sheer will is even proven in the Wano arc, when some fodders are trying to attack Usopp, Big Mom sends out some Conqueror's Haki nearby, which instantly knocks out those mooks and even startles a gator smile fruit user. But Usopp? He doesn't even flinch or bat an eye, seldom faint. He's just wondering "What was that?" and when he realises he immediately starts using it to his advantage, saying that he used the Haki, and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually could use Conqueror's, he can already use Observation Haki unconsciously though. He was even brave enough to object against Luffy who wanted to replace Merry, their friend, with some other ship, and even left the crew for a while, becoming Sogeking to help the others save Robin. What a living legend, who turns his big lies into bigger truths.

@@obeseoverlold There's actually a very cool theory that Usopp has had conquerors for a while. Every time Usopp beats someone by scaring them (Ms.Merry christmas, Perona, Sugar, etc) they foam at the mouth just like when someone is knocked out with conquerors. Someone is knocked out by conquerors not when their significantly physically weaker but when their willpower is significantly weaker. However due to his low self confidence he needs to weaken his opponents willpower, convince them of his overwhelming strength, trick them into beliving there's that overwhelming strength gap that there normally is in conquerors haki, and in turn giving up their will to fight and leaving themselves vulnerable to his weak conquerors haki. There's also an idea that in the moment Usopp buys his own hype, convinces himself he's lifting a 10 ton hammer, and that boost to his confidence also strengthens his conquerors haki.

The fight with Perona was also a great display of Usopp's emotional maturity because he was the only one who could push through his negative thoughts, something even Luffy couldn't. Luffy can do things nobody else does because he never really has doubt in his abilities, which is another reason why he was so emotionally crushed after Marineford. I love Usopp for being the spokesman of Anxiety disorder and depression in one piece. Perona seems undefeatable when considering that she can kill people's dreams instantly with her ghosts. For people who have never felt these disorders (speaking from experience), they'll kick your ass time and time again and make you feel like each new attempt to free yourself is twice as hard as the one before. This is a struggle that no one on the Straw hats other than Usopp has gone through. The Perona fight shows us that after Sogeking's unmasking and the Going Merry gone, Usopp has finally felt like he truly belongs with the crew because of his own merits; not just because he's funny or because he was a package deal with the Merry. He conquered his own insecurities, which is a superpower in its own right.

Usopp has no anxiety disorder or depression at all. He is just a coward really. But people get it. At least those who use their brains and a lot of fans understand his position. Everyone would fear for their life when faced with big time pirates Straw Hats regularly face. Sometimes he has anxiety ofc but its situational (like with any regular person). On normal occasions Usopp is very happy, outgoing and friendly guy. He is actually the most normal and ordinary straw hat member. He is average by any standard. He tell lies cause its his defensive mechanism. Some people laugh when nervous. I have met a lot of people who lie to fit in. Usopp is somewhere in between. Its just part of his personality.

@@sasagrcevic475 Perona's ghosts didn't turn Sanji or Zoro into cowards, they made them 'negative'. Usopp is a coward, sure, but that's expected, as you said. His anxieties that I'm talking about his Usopp feeling useless to Luffy and the gang and that he doesn't deserve to be on the crew with the rest of the heavy hitters. Nami even has a scene with Usopp talking about it, saying that that's why he's always tinkering, he's just trying to be useful. I guess you're right in the sense that he doesn't have a disorder, since over the course of the show we see him conquer those feelings and they don't stop him from functioning as a human being, but those feelings were still very much there.

Usopp made Nami's clima tact that enabled her to beat even a CP9 member. If that's not genius, I don't know what it is. And thankfully the crew got Franky now which seems to have established a thinktank with Usopp so that they can bounce ideas with each other and create new things with their workshops. Hopefully Franky gave a bit of stimulus to and fed Usopp's creativity, maybe boosting his confidence too.

One of my favorite things about Ussop is how he just doesn't participate in the power scaling, but doesn't wane in value at all. In a world where people can stop a bullet with sheer will power or slice a mountain in half, he's just a regular ass guy and he knows it. He's not even like Batman with the whole "I don't have powers, but I basically do because I'm better than everyone at pretty much everything" schtick. Ussop is literally bringing a slingshot to an arms race that escalated to nukes, and he still manages to be the one who comes in clutch. I almost don't want him to get any stronger. He'll still be the one who saves the day with nothing but a rubber band, a bluff, and a concerningly high pain threshold.

Usopp has been the strawhat hurt the most by the rampant rise in powerscaling/power fantasy parts of teh fandom the most. His greatest strengths as a character has always been what he does in the events AROUND the battle rather than the battles themselves. I'm so happy you touched on his connection to the idea of being "average" within the the crazy world of One Piece. It's a routine thing not only in one Piece but in many battle focused series that people tend to lean towards and favor the stronger, more flashy, more powerful characters because they embody the things we want to see/be in these types of worlds. Ironically enough the hate towards him is fueled more by a breaking of fantasy with a dose of reality than it does with anything to do with his character being actually "annoying". I've found most people who don't like Usopp play a lot of comparisons rather than actually discussing aspects they don't like about him, and the aspects they can mention are overplayed and casted over the strengths of them. I find his comedy to be some of the best. It's goofy, fun, and lighthearted, not to mention it often comes back in unique ways (insert Prophet Usopp joke here). His fights in early one piece are some of the most interesting because he actually uses a mixture of mundane and everyday items with things he manages to either make, learn how to use, or both. Mix that with the creative ways he uses them alongside his lies and bluffs end up creating some of the greatest set ups and finales to fights I've seen. And of course, as you touched on so incredibly, he grounds and keeps the crew together. He acts as a sort of support to the crew, helping in all the little small things no one else can do. The type of small things that most people look over in fact. He was the one who made their Jolly Roger, he helped keep the Marry afloat and was the one who assisted in the upkeep of everything. His biggest moments in every arc are when he helps get the strawhats that finale big swing for the finale or helps them achieve their current goal. But, that's not the big, crazy, punch battle spectacle most fans look for. I find it heartbreaking whenever I hear people saying they hated Usopp during water 7 because of his conflict with Luffy, because it means they missed teh core part of his struggle and a major point of the crew, they're a family. Everyone here isn't just there for a job or a niche, as you said. They're here because they uplift each other. The connection you made with Sanji, especially given your previous analysis of him as a character, works so well into hammering this home. They need each other not because they're useful for one benign reason or another, but because they care and love for each other and the shared hardships they've been through together. Whether it's the trauma they each have in their past, to the challenges they face in the future. They stick together, because they know they wouldn't be here without each other. There's a whole lot more I'd love to talk about but this is starting to become a small essay already. So for now, I'll leave this with a thank you for another amazing video! I've been really enjoying your content and even been looking into your older stuff too! I really appreciate the hard work you put into these and hope you keep it up! Remember to take care of yourself though. Can't wait for the next one!

Watching him have that insane fear, and conquering it for others is something I love about him, because I struggle with anxiety, so everytime I see him turn around and fight, not knowing if he can even win, for the sake of the people who rely on him, are some of the most powerful scenes in the show for me because usopp is who I aspire to be.

What I love about One Piece is that the characters feel so real. Usopp in particular. Him lacking confidence does not get solved in one battle where he shows up, but it is a slow progression of constantly having to show up, push himself out of him comfort zone and getting more and more confident in doing so. I also see people mention how Usopp didnt develop as a character because he ran away from sugar & trebol in Dressrosa, but this was his bravest moment yet !! He jumped into action, fully aware that he would probably die, to save some strangers he meet 3 hours ago & people still call him a coward because he hesitated before doing so. Usopps will never be someone to blindly jump into action like Luffy is. Every battle Usopp faces is also a battle with himself, he fights with so little self believe that he managed to make the negative hollow from perona depressed, yet he still fights. I just really love him

Something I’ll like to add is Usopp’s motivation and convincing he does throughout his major fights. During Arlong Park, when Usopp is facing off against a fish-men, although he gets away with his lie that he is dead, he convinces himself that in order to call himself a pirate and be apart of a pirate crew is to FIGHT, as he can’t always count on his method to work in favour for him. So, he gathers all the courage he can to attack the fish man and even win. During the Alabasta fight, him and Chopper (two members of the “weak trio” at this point) are struggling against Mr 4 and Miss Merry Christmas. He’s already discouraged by Miss Merry Christmas saying that Luffy is dead and killed by Crocodile, but It isn’t until Miss Merry Christmas mocks and laughs at Luffy’s dream at becoming the pirate king that Usopp, once again, gathers the motivation to fight on his friends behalf. He convinces himself that Luffy isn’t dead and tells Chopper that he won’t stand when people laugh at his friends dreams. This man was already close to death at this point but he stills finds a purpose in carrying on the fight until the end despite how one sided it was previous looking. Water 7, as stated, focuses on Usopp’s weaknesses in his physical strength compared to everyone else and him “bringing the crew down”. This is shown in his fight with Jabra, where he’s stuck in close quarters and unable to do anything due to his already negative self-image, but it isn’t until Sanji tells him his strength’s are needed elsewhere in a sense, and that is being the crew’s sniper. This sort of reassurance helps him come to understand his role on the crew and what he can do, and not what he cannot Thriller Bark sees the return of SniperKing, but this time it shows more of the inner conflict between the two personalities he has. As Usopp is being beaten by Kumae, he puts on SniperKing’s mask which gives him a quick burst of bravery and he is able to put salt in Kumae’s mouth, removing his shadow. Now that Usopp is able to find a chance to run away from Perona, SniperKing convinces him he must fight, he is the only crew member that can take perona’s devil fruit powers, and Sniper king tells him to think rationally, which he then takes into consideration Perona’s behaviour. This helps Usopp gain motivation to continue fighting and helps showcase that although he is well aware of his weaknesses in himself, his opponent has weaknesses as well. In Dressrosa, Usopp and Robin are in charge of taking out Sugar and Trebol. Right off the bat, Usopp witnesses Robin get one-tapped, and turned into a toy (it is important to note that people immediately forget the person that turned into a toy, so while he saw Robin turned into a toy, his memory with her is completely wiped until she is restored). He also witnesses multiple Tontatta get turned into toys. The situation seems hopeless to him, and with him being the only person left standing, he dips. The people who are fighting on his behalf get one-tapped, and Usopp is already partly convinced he doesn’t have to fight on their behalf because it was on the basis of a lie he told them. So as he’s running around the island going looney, he does eventually convince himself he needs to fight back in order to carry out the plan with Law and the others. Not only is this the fight time we see Usopp fight for people other than his crew mates, but he flat out tells the Tontatta y’all are stupid for trusting me, but seeing their willingness and bravery helps him continue on, and he pulls off the dub by eating some hot grape thing So, although Usopp’s major fights have a formula of start off on a lie - panic / possibility of death at stake - gave badass speech about something / gather strength through willingness - get the fat dub It builds off each other each and every time He starts with a requirement of a pirate is to fight - defend his captain’s and friends dream - Gain more confidence in his abilities - rationalize the situation - help others in need And it’s such a wonderful thing to watch for the first time

21:38 You ask if Chopper knew about Usopp being Sogeking. I think he did in an often overlooked detail. In Chapter 595 when Chopper returns to Torino Kingdom for his timeskip arc, he returns dressed up as a superhero with a mask and a cape and calls himself Chopper Mask. The locals in Torino point out that Chopper is just embarrassed to return so soon. He copies what Usopp did as Sogeking so I think this was Oda's way of telling us that Chopper knew at some point and may have even just played along with Usopp because he's super kind like that. Also, I really like your One Piece videos. I was hoping you'd make an Usopp one.

It makes no sense that people dislike him because he's "useless" combat wise (which is like, not even the best metric anyways, Nami ain't killing Kaidou, but the Strawhats wouldn't have made it past the red line if it wasn't for her) when most people wouldn't even leave their island Dude's fighting basically monsters with a fucking slingshot and WINNING He's inspirational as hell

I love how u explained Usopp's character bc he gets a lot of unwarranted hate due to others misunderstanding him or simply living in ignorance. He deserves so much appreciation and recognition for who he is and what he does. Usopp is essentially the heart of the crew and is so "human". He's been a comfort character of mine. His strive for self-improvement while accepting his shortcomings is so inspirational and moving to see. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEOOOOO

It is always a joy to hear someone analyzing these characters’ core, and I’ve been adoring all of your videos, but Usopp has a special place in my heart because of all the things you’ve listed about him. Like it or not, he is the most relatable straw hat there is in the crew, he is a tough cookie and incredibly smart. He is depressed, and insecure, and it’s a man between monsters, but he always does his best and his best is always enough. And I just love that you put it into words. Thank you for spreading the Usopp love ❤️❤️❤️ our god needs it

Most shows I feel like have a hard time replicating an actual human argument. But the whole scene of Luffy and Ussop arguing was perfect. Especially when Luffy was about to say something out of emotion and Sanji had to correct him. It felt so heart wrenching and real! I didn’t want these guys arguing, it genuinely made me sad! I didn’t even think about the fact there’s literally like 800 more episodes of the show with him in most of them later on, I was hurt!

Something else that I think people might be missing about Usopp, something that was even clearly stated in Dressrosa. He is a sniper, someone who acts as *backline support*. And, as you've gone through here, he is extremely competent in that role.

Something that I use for my defense of Usopp is that he’s a long ranged fighter that gets put up in close ranged fights early on most of the time. It makes sense for him to panic because obviously a sniper shouldn’t be on the front line of battle. Adding to the fact that most of the enemies in one piece have incredibly powerful devil fruits and levels of haki, I think Usopps fear is pretty justified. He’s physically a normal human that thrives best on the back of the battlefield.

It amazes me that every lies usopp used to tell is becoming true overtime. Like the giant sea monster that looks like a golden fish whose shits becomes small islands near Little Garden. Usopp already got lot of followers in Dressrosa and 2 giant followers in Ennys Lobby, and it is probably going to expand as the manga reaches Elbaf. It is going to be a cliche, but I really hope that Oda presents us with a scene, on the world war against the world governement, where Usopp yells "BEWARE MY 8 THOUSAND FOLLOWERS" and then 8000 followers shows up to fight with the King of Snipers.

Usopp is SO underrated in Punk Hazard. Getting all of Cesar's underlings on their side was no small feat and it's the first time any Straw Hat declares that yes, Luffy will be King of the Pirates. Also, Bon Clay played a similar role in Impel Down (cowardly, still rooting for Luffy, and getting allies to also root for Luffy) and it's worth noting that people loved that character arc for them, but when it's Usopp suddenly no one can read. Usopp has so many people convinced he's useless, and that couldn't be further from the truth. But even if he were useless, the Straw Hats love him and that's all that matters. I hope we see him use Haki again. I literally cheered when he made that shot.

Of course he’s loves Usopps stories like luffy does but he’s also always impressed with how smart and brave usopp is. There are two things you didn't mention: 1) Yassop sailed with Shanks for a while before Usopp was born. Meaning that he's the symbol of his and Banchina's continued love and relationship. Of course there's no ill will from her. She knows and understands the choice he made and imparts both onto Usopp. At least indirectly. Of course he can't help but admire this myth of A Man. 2) Back in Arlong Park, there's this moment where Luffy tells Arlong that his crew do what he can't. And for Usopp, that is to lie. He overhears this, still sticking around after "running away," but that only helps to make the point we saw in Syrup Village. Usopp lies to himself and others to do what he does end up doing. But he doesn't truly believe in them. Probably due to the deep-rooted abandonment issues he still developed despite admiring the cause of them. He's the polar opposite to Luffy in this regard. Who didn't know, or even considered, that he had a father who left him behind. To whom the very concept of lying, be it to himself or others, is foreign. For Luffy, there's only doing, his immense self-confidence built from the ridiculous trials Garp imposed on him and wanting to fulfil his dream and (then) two promises. Which only makes his wavering in his fight against Lucci and the encouragement he got from Usopp all the more powerful. There was no lie there, only truth. And we see that on full display with the Mask of Sogeking gone. Thinking a bit more on father figures in One Piece, I'm curious about your take on the importance of A Father in the story. You always mention them when they come up, but I do believe that there's a larger thread to be had. Especially since they are the most important to the male characters. Which isn't to forget Vivi, Lola or Chiffon, but those, alongside Yamato whom we can debate a bit for either, are the exception. With Vivi being the exception even among them. There's a lot to be examined about Fatherhood in this story.

Usopp is my favorite character. One thing I never really understood is why people call him the “normal” or the relatable one. As if Nami is a monster compared to him. Usopp if far from normal he does superhuman feats all the time in one piece. I also think you can aspire to be like any straw hat. They all believe in their dreams and work hard to achieve them. Just because luffy is made of rubber doesn’t mean you can’t try to be like him. Other than that I think this is a great video about Usopp!

Before Jinbe joined, Usopp was my favorite Straw Hat. The fight with Luffy and that whole "I'm already Negative" line hit me in the gut in a way I never realized I understood and suddenly a lot of things about me made sense. I often feel like I'm worthless, that I'm not as smart as my younger siblings, that I have no real talent, that everything people say they like about me is just a result of the false persona I put on just to get through the day with as little problems as possible. But there are people that have seen under that mask and like what they see, I'm not stupid, if anything my merely admitting I don't know as much as I want is a good sign I still have so much potential for learning, and I do have an amazing talent, I just don't have ways of using it for making money. Here was Usopp continuing to try his darndest even though he was clearly out of his league and he beat those challenges each time. He was the most human member of the crew and the most relatable. I love this guy so much I actually have a SogeKing costume that I wore to a con once. He inspires me to keep trying in spite of everything the world tries to do to keep me down. I'm not the worthless teammate. I am the heart and the storyteller. I can meet any challenge with my friends by my side. And things will get better.

I think the main issue is his intrinsic importance Sanji and zoro are always on the main stage, Jinbei and Brook have some of the best back stories, and Robin Franky and Nami are imperative to get to the one piece, and chopper keeps everyone alive if you asked someone "what does the crew need right now?" While Usopp definitely has importance, like when it comes to needing, y’know, sniping skills, the main point is that Usopp doesn’t necessarily need to be strong for the crew to like him. Luffy was more than willing to invite the tree guy from thriller bark cuz he looked cool. What matters is their bonds. The fact that the whole crew just so happens to be strong is cuz of story convenience. Like how there just so happens to be enough high ranking goons beneath the arc’s main bad guy to give each crew member a fight

Haven’t actually finished the vid yet but I just wanna say I’m really happy you made this because I’m so tired of writing paragraphs defending my black brother here 😂 the short version of the rant is that it drives me insane how many people bitch and moan about him being a useless or a coward when that makes no damn sense (I know you explained this) but at the root of it, it just bugs me because it’s the exact opposite of the point Oda is trying to make. He’s clearly trying to show that you don’t earn your spot on the crew by needing to be a fearless powerhouse. This aint the big mom or beast pirates. Time and time again luffy shows that if you’re down, you vibe and you’re willing to put your life on the line respecting everyone’s dreams, then you are in. He even said before that all his friends aren’t strong like him and that’s okay because he, Zoro and sanji will get strong enough for it to not matter. It’s always been friends and respect first above everything. Even though everyone happens to have a role, it’s not why luffy recruited them. He didn’t even know chopper was a doctor, usopp was actually a good shot, brook was a musician or Robin was crucial to the poneglyphs. He saw friends who respected the gang and that’s all he needed. And in what universe is usopp actually a useless coward anyway? People bring up water 7 like he didn’t face his fears, join the battle with everyone else and apologize at the end, promising to get stronger. A useless coward isn’t playing sniper king and putting his life on the line burning down a government flag for the homies. People get stuck in this utilitarian shonen ape brain of “be strong or you’re useless and I hate you” and it’s so annoying because that’s one of the themes Luffy is directly opposed to. It’s so sad because it’s like people miss the entire point of his insecurities. He pours his heart out about feeling weak and it just goes in one ear and out the other for some fans who then go “you’re weak I hate you” huhhh??? And not to get overly dramatic but that honestly is a real life problem and it’s very telling that people still miss the point when it’s so clearly laid out

Yes, finally! I love your analyses, they always offer me new points of view on the characters and on Oda's way of writing them. Personally one of Usopp's Dynamics/relationships that I like the most is with Franky (he's quite underrated and I hope Oda will explore it further or cover more). How their relationship begins and how it evolves taking into account that Usopp does with Franky what he should do with his father; they work together (Franky has a high opinion of Udopp's abilities), often compete in sniping (this has been seen in the movies).

Even before the Going Merry fiasco, in Arlong park when Luffy is listing why he needs others to achieve his dreams, he tell "that's why a have swordmans, a cook, a navigator and a liar". Of course for Luffy this skill is as much as important as the others (kind of how Sanji "bad traits" is what Luffy finds best). This is played as a comedic moment, specially by Ussop, but Luffy was really serious about how Ussop lies are as important as the others rôles. But imagine how Ussop felt to be the liar of the crew and being compared to Swordman, Cook, Navigator... No Wonder it all boiled down at Water 7, but in every arc since his introduction Ussop usefullness is put through the test, in his regards

Usopp is Batman character of the crew. Normal guy among superhumans who keeps up with others with his ingenuity, planning and bag of tricks. Theatricality and deception are his ammo I feel there are many ways to look at Usopp vs Luffy and perhaps all of it are right to some degree. I think that one of the reasons that Usopp was fighting for Merry was that if he wins, Merry's crew would not have abandoned her. His fight with Luffy was also about showing that he is strong. People take it as Usopp never had a chance, but Usopp never used anything lethal against Luffy. He used shurikens to herd him but all the attacks that did land on Luffy were things like tabasco or eggs. Imo it wasnt that he took Luffy's words to heart, but his own. When he met Robin in the train, he asked her to believe in Luffy after all I dont get Usopp hate either, but he also has a very loyal fanbase and thats enough for me. His battles are also most fun to watch And damn! I never made the Elbaf- Fable connection! Thanks for that

Usopp is one of the bravest Straw Hats, for facing the dangers of their adventures with just his wits and his slingshot, always doing his very best to help his friends. He defeated a fishman with a hammer and a rubber band among other things for crying out loud. Not to mention his resourcefulness when making and applying his inventions. I’ll admit, that it took me a while to warm up to him back in the day, as I personally resonate more with idealised characters in fiction. That being said, a “normal” person on the crew is absolutely essential to ground the crew and provide a point of reference for the reader. His reactions are hilarious and he has a great dynamic with the others.
