Going Off Grid Ep 4 - Welding/ Making - Work Bench - Forme Industrious
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Filmed mostly in August 2022. As you might be aware, the new workshop has nothing in it to work from for example, a work bench. In this video I get busy making a Steel Bench and I fool about doing other things. I hope you enjoy the adventure. Make sure you watch to the end to see the Beautiful Halls Falls.
Thanks for watching!
Scott

Love the shot of the meal, resupply with anti-scurvy food. Nup.😁
Best moment, i am torn between the beauty of Halls Falls and the look on your face at the first bite of that rice and everything meal. 🤔
Put an ear plug in the wire feeder, it wipes the wire clean as you weld . Great video

Totally agree mate! I use 2 earplugs on the wire as it leads into the wirefeeder and add desiccant packs in the bottom of the machine to help prevent moisture.

I didn't show it very well but the wire was rusty. I hadn't use this machine in ages. I should have just spooled off all the bad wire at the beginning but I got lazy. Good tip by the way, thanks!

Scott, your clamps reminded me. We were working late one night at work, and the boss grabbed a bottle of dish detergent to wash his dishes at break time. I told him he was using the wrong detergent. He said, "excuse me?" I said that was the wrong time of day to use that. The bottle says Dawn, not dusk. All jesting aside, that table should be more than adequate. I live in a town of about 3,100 residents, but my shop is about 25 km from the house. It's on an old order Amish farm, so there's no electricity there. I have to run my power tools from a generator, and I have solar panels to power my led lights and smaller electric tools. I'll be building a waste oil heater as we're nearly into autumn here and already the temperatures are beginning to drop. I don't mind being off grid at my shop, as it's just a minor inconvenience. I wish you well on your endeavors there.

Mate, super sketchy! Thanks Dale!! taking the lathe up this week end.
Very much enjoying this off grid build stuff :) and that birdsong! that and the waterfalls I'd never get anything done! I spent a few months in Australia in 2002 after getting a reduncancy payout from a job, bought a car and drove from sydney to cairns then back down to melbourne, and the quiet is what I remember best, just stopping literally miles from anywhere and just hearing a few birds and crickets, just amazing. Difficult to find that here in the UK, not impossible, but there isn't as much space without other people :)
Wonderful series Scott. And yes, lots to give thanks for up there in the Tablelands bush.
THe sounds of nature are amazing! It's hard to feel like you are alone. Love Granddad's old bandsaw! This is a great series, Scott!

I was thinking how amazing it is to have kangaroos right in your yard, but then it occurred to me that you would likely feel the same if you saw the white tail bucks and does that we have roaming around in ours. Nature. It's pretty cool.

The food and dog scenes are epic. And of course, there is some serious and enjoyable work. Great job !!
I have a family in Oz. As a pommie I have spent quite a bit of time down under, great place. You are the first Aussie I have heard talk about the unique sound of Australia, that was my thought when I arrived for the first time and still is Kookaburras and Magpies (UK magpies make a very boring sound) together, as Aussie as freezing beer and animals that want to kill you!

I actually have childhood memories of that Coleman cooking stove and the yellow tent stakes. I'm a bit jealous, to be honest; the construction, the setting, the hands-on approach. Love it!
Scott just found your site, what you are doing on your property is bloody fantastic, at 67 that's what I always wanted to do. True the sound in the Aussie bush is something you can only dream about.

Nice video. Cool projects. Your camp food looked delicious to me. Mahalo for sharing! 🙂🙏🐒
Thanks for bringing us along on this Outback adventure. Thumbs up!
Love your bench, simple but practical. Halls falls looks so beautiful, between that and the peacefulness of where your'e building, I can see why you bought your property. 😊
When making workbenches I always leave a perimeter lip of good proportion so that a variety of clamp styles can fit and get a grip. Can't think of all the number of times I had to use every clamp I had down to the three and four inch ones as well. Can't do it with a thick table top.
It's so beautiful. I finally saved up enough money to go on a trip and it was between Australia and Iceland but ultimately decided to stay in the northern hemisphere since I'll be going in December. Maybe in another 5 years I'll make down there!
Excellent.

Beautiful landscape to work and relax in. Never pass up an opportunity to enjoy the sights and sound of nature 👍👍😎👍👍

I'm very happy that I've found your channel. I'm looking at doing this on my own in southern Queensland on the Western Downs. I can do carpentry, wiring, plumbing, mechanical, but I think I need to learn to weld. Most of the properties I'm looking at are lacking access to water, power or even mobile reception, so there should be some challenges there. Nothing insurmountable I believe. I've got the tools and know how basically. So now it's sourcing the materials which I'm pretty good at. You're inspiring me more and more.

Hi Scott, Nice Bench I thought that the black board on the floor was 3/4" 19mm steel. But with the cost of steel now that would be quite expensive. I priced out a 6' x12' x 12 gauge 2m x 4m x 2.6mm for a trailer floor and they quoted me $616.00USD or $904.00AUD. I was going to ask if you had any kangaroos near your property, but I guess you do. I imagine they keep their distance from humans, but will they get into your things looking for food? Looking forward to more videos from your off grid location.

Gorgeous land! Are you planning on cutting in any swales or building berms to hold rain water on the slope? Looks pretty lush already, but a bit of water held back for the dry season can't be a bad thing. With all that downed timber you have, it might pay to borrow from what Ari over at Polyculture Farms did - cutting it short and using it to lay out contour lines on the slopes like little one-log dams that collect sediment and slow run-off when it rains. He's got a fun channel here on KZread. Also, think about getting a tin of pine tar (Stockholm Tar) from the local equine or boating center. Way better than tung or linseed oil, imo, and smells awesome! 😁
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious

Thank you Vaughn! I'd love to do the permaculture thing including swales. Maybe those heavy logs could help like you say. I'll check out the channel, cheers! I haven't seen any pine tar but I'll keep a look out for it, Thanks again and all the best!

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious Here's a link to the episode where Ari talks about his "wood trash" contour lines for stopping erosion and such.... kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqxsqqOuecWznto.html His land is truly awful, but it's been amazing to see how much he's been able to bring it back from the brink of doom in just a couple of short years. Really neat to see. Every property is different, but I liked the idea of the wood lines just as a way to use up downed trees. The Pine Tar is sold wherever they service the equine/bovine or nautical industries. Sometimes branded as Stockholm Tar, it's what allowed the British Navy to rule the waves. Plus, it's got antimicrobial stuff in it that stops beetles from boring in to the wood. Great for tool handles, tall ships, waterproofing canvas, and just plain making wood look great. Your tung oil finish has about the same look on white woods, imo, but Pine Tar is just sexier.
