Going native: from Zen-like approach to samurai style-a garden in transition

Ойын-сауық

To avoid shocking the neighbors, up until now landscape designer Kat Weiss took a Zen-like approach to transforming her garden; she has been removing the non-natives little by little and replacing them with our own local keystone species, which provide the best habitat for our winged friends. This past year, however, Kat removed a number of large nonnative ornamentals and replaced them with natives that are of the greatest value to wildlife, including blue and coast live oaks, a variety of manzanitas, California lilacs, currants, sages, and buckwheats. Kat shares what she learned along the way, and we get a unique view of a garden transformation still in process.
