I found this from a Google lens search. I had a volunteer sprout in my garden last year and I decided to let it grow and find out what I had received.. thanks .

Is there a map of the “California Bay Laurel” / Umbellulone-trees naturally occurring dense growth areas in California ? Or southern Oregon / Grant’s Pass area ? It has some nice stuff in its aroma (Eucalyptol [eucalyptus], Eugenol [cloves], both alpha and beta Pinene [evergreen trees]…. … but also produce a ketone called umbellulone which produces those terrible headaches ….

I love the smell of the tree and leaves. Thanks for this great video. Could you avoid making text overlays with that semi-opaque background? To me it's obtrusive when it comes up--just the background part, which covers so much of the imagery. I welcome the text itself. Thanks again for the id info of one of my favorite CA native plants. 😍

Good video, and like good educational tools, it stimulates more questions, as why do bay trees often bend downward? what is the function of the glands at the base of the stamens? Looking forward to more such floral enlightenment in these new Jepson Herbarium videos.

I recently saw this text on a park sign "Notice here how the California bay has toppled over. New trunks are emerging from the fallen trunk creating a much larger, denser canopy than the original tree. This adaptation allows this tree to claim large areas and outcompete other plants for light and available resources. This helps the plant to thrive."

Are the roots invasive?

The Jepson Manual describes the flower as having 3 staminodes. Are they visible in the photos on the video or are they so short that they are "buried" under the glands on each stamen? Great video series!

Thanks for your question : ) The staminodes are not visible in any of the photos in the video. They are smaller than the glands. I was able to see them by dissecting a flower under magnification. Re: crushing a few leaves if you find them--the bums living along the creeks and in the canyons near Malibu can burn bay laurel logs in their campfires, but if you are a tax-paying citizen and pick a few bay leaves and tuck them in your pocket, a State Park ranger can fine you and throw you in the pokey. You think I'm joking.
