The bass is so much stronger and better here than on the album. Although that wasn't Kathy Valentine's fault necessarily. She was probably told to 'scale it back' a little since they were going for more of a 'pop' sound.

@@tonycreednow All those bands in URGH! sound killer, regardless of the location or whether or not they were bands I even liked. Miles Copeland spared no expense at getting top notch mixes out of these performances. I know a few people who were at the Santa Monica Civic for Chelsea, DK’s, X, and (I think) Wall Of Voodoo and Magazine… and they said that the mobile studio (probably the same one used to record the bands at the Whisky) was pretty cutting edge for the time. Whatever anyone’s opinion of Miles Copeland or IRS Records is, there’s no denying that he knew how to get results.

That’s because Margot was a badass. When they fired her they lost their edge.
One month after this show was filmed, I met Kathy Valentine in the "Green" room after her set with The Textones who were opening for Gary Myrick. I was just 21 and I don't recall any mention of Kathy playing with the Go-Gos. I did a little impromptu interview and I asked what The Textones had coming up to which she replied: "We're playing in Arizona next month." And I asked her somewhat jokingly "So, what do you do with your first MILLION? She looked right at me and said "I'd like to have a new car. I've never had a new car before." In just a matter 2-3 months later I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought at the time that the signed Textones flier would be the last I ever saw of Ms. Valentine when-BOOM! The Go-Gos debut LP in the display case of our Mall record store. For years I showed off my Kathy Valentine autographed flier from the Textones show in September 1980 that she signed: "With Kathy, from love." Sadly, one day the flier couldn't be found. Talk about GRACIOUS! It was me and my friend roaming the Whiskey like we OWNED the place and we landed in the band "Green Room" due to its having an unguarded open door. We weren't even sure when the Textones set was ending so imagine our surprise when they wandered in from the stage. My friend and I had a demeanor that made everyone think that wherever we were-we were SUPPOSED to be there. Kathy and one of the guy members I don't remember which one were receptive to our presence and we stood around and "schmoozed" for awhile. I do remember that Carla O. was not in the room at the time. My friend bought a "Gary Myrick & The Figures"t-shirt. There were no Textones t-shirts that night. Now 40 years later I look back and I see this "Green Room" in my mind and think how I was talking to someone who neither one of us had any idea of what a heart-stopping ride she was about to get on. Now, either she had already joined the Go-Gos but thought it inappropriate to mention "another band" or her going over to them was not a done deal in late September 1980. The only other part of our conversation I can recall is when I mentioned that my friend and I live in NC and we're driving back in a few days and we're stopping to see my friend's sister in Austin, when Kathy's eyes got big and she says "Yeah, Austin! That's where I'm from! Carla, too!"

I'm writing a screenplay about the trip to LA that my friend and I went on, our mission was to pick up his sister's car at Long Beach Pier and drive it back to NC. Aside from meeting Kathy V. we had many incredible experiences not just in LA but on the drive back East via Las Vegas, Pueblo, CO, Amarillo, Lubbock, Austin (where his other sister lived), Dallas, where we happened upon "The Cars" in concert at Reunion Arena w/ The Motels. I don't want to put out any "spoilers" but I definitely plan on including meeting Kathy V. in the script, along with pedestrians along Santa Monica Blvd swarming cars in traffic in search of tickets for "MONTY PYTHON"-Hollywood Bowl. Hopefully coming to a theater near YOU!

She was asked by Charlotte on Christmas 1980 in the bathroom of The Whisky (At an X show) if she could play bass. She lied and said yes. The Go-Go's had 8 sold out shows for NYE/NY week and Kathy learned how to play bass and their set list in a few days. So when you saw her a few mos before she was not in the Go-Go's yet. Everything felt new and exciting… and different and a real break from the past. At least it did to me. I just knew it was a special time and I didn’t want to miss a second of it. I packed a *LOT* of living into the first couple of years of the 80’s… and then it all ended too soon. From ‘83-forward things got a lot less interesting and a lot more predictable.

I watch this and think of that horrible call Ginger had to make to tell Margot she was fired and out of the band. In Belinda's book she says Margot begged and pleaded not to be kicked out of the band. It's sad knowing how far she got with the band and she gets kicked out but if one band member is not on the same level and same path as the rest of the band, it can ruin it for everyone in the band. They had to make a tough decision. It brought in another great musician, Kathy and the rest was history. I hope Margot life turned out well for her. It was nice seeing her in the new documentary and how well she looks. She has aged very well. I thought she looked great in the documentary. Good for Margot!!! God Bless All the Go-Go's!!!

I dunno. I think they could have worked it out without having to fire her. They wouldn’t have been the first band to have members having “creative differences”. That kind of tension can be channeled into making great music. It has worked for a great many bands. I mean I’m glad that they finally settled their differences after 40+ years, but at the time it was pretty messed up. Margot was a founding member. To be fired from a band you helped start just as you’re on the cusp of massive success has got to be pretty damn traumatic.

Those were indeed special times. The whole time period of 1977 through 1983 was an explosion of creativity like no other in modern history. I count my lucky stars every day that I got to experience the 2nd half of it firsthand. I started getting into the scene in the summer of 1980, right about the time this gig took place, and at that time it was just off the chain. It was like getting sucked into a vortex of excitement. The first 2 and a half years of the 80’s were a time like no other. I could write a really thick book about my experiences from back then.

Now that's the Belinda I remember seeing at the Roxy. Red dress and on the chuby side.
This is a great song and the weight thing should be let GO. Cancer can make you look thin too and I don't know how many people are willing to take it that far but is that what is important?...anyway this is a great performance, the spirit of the song, the spirit of the thing and to put any emphasis on how someone looks (and I think the fact she looks like a normal girl ADDS to the spirit of the song) in a derogatory manner is just simple minded. Much has been said over the years about how Margot supposedly wanted the Go-Go’s to remain a pure punk band and be more like X or whatever, but the truth is that she just wanted keep the punk edge, as they’re doing in this footage.
