    Yes, my Sentence Correction videos wade through the fluff and help you focus on the most commonly-tested points of English grammar and provide you with the ideal methodology for answering them. If mental fatigue is an issue on the verbal section, remember that you can now select your section order. You may want to tackle the verbal section first next time, since it sounds like quant is your strength (and you're more likely to be able to still do well on it even when you're tired).

    Don't be too hard on yourself. Yes, taking the breaks is definitely important. BUT, be careful if you choose to leave the testing room. I had a student once who left to go to the bathroom during his break, was a little too casual about it, and when he got back to his computer the next section had already started and he lost about three minutes. As a result he panicked and rushed and it hurt his score. Oops!

    Your thinking is good. This video was made before the GMAT made the change a couple months ago allowing you to select your own section order, so you no longer have to start with the verbal section. If you feel like setting yourself up for success by leading with the quant section will help you, then go for it! Best of luck to you, and thanks in advance for the referrals.

    Thanks for the video. I really love the way you explain concepts. It might be a bit irrelevant here, but I would like to talk about the CR question, which is discussed in the video. The conclusion of the argument is: Profile increased due to Ms. Valdez international marketing efforts. Anything that breaks this relationship is a weak-ner. Option C) Says that the advertising focus of the company has changed from Radio to Television. It may be far fetched ADs on TV >> Sale (increase)>> Profits (increase). This breaks the relationship. I crossed option E) because more or double revenue doesn't necessarily mean increase in profit. I can site a number of OG questions that focus on the terminology (revenue may not be imply profit) I fall under the 650-700 zone. This is where I get lost. It hard to choose the right one.

  • @dominatethegmat

    @dominatethegmat

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Sunny Mantri This is a good question. I agree with your assertion that increased revenue doesn't necessarily equal increased profit. That is something to be on the lookout for. However, the big issues determine the right answer more so than the nuances, so start there. What I mean by that is, the "big" thing you want to do to weaken the argument is to attack/weaken the underlying assumption. Here, the conclusion is: A causes B (i.e. Ms. Valdez's efforts are what resulted in increased profits). What would weaken that? Finding that something ELSE actually led to those increased profits! Answer choice E does that perfectly by suggesting that it was actually Mr. Jones's decision, not Ms. Valdez's efforts, that had the biggest impact on profits. Since answer choice E breaks the causal relationship the best, it's still the right answer even though there's a nuanced issue with revenue not necessarily equating to profits. Make sense? The big problem with answer choice C is that it actually SUPPORTS the conclusion. First of all, your line of reasoning does take it a bit too far. If you have to make that many assumptions about the chain of events leading to increased profits, then you're adding assumptions to the already existing assumptions, which means the answer choice is probably out of SCOPE. But even if I accept your line of reasoning, all that does is support the idea that in fact Ms. Valdez was responsible for the increased profits. Right? B/c the switch to TV and radio ads happened on her watch? Remember that to weaken the conclusion we want to show how Ms. Valdez was NOT responsible for the increased profits; answer choice C does the exact opposite.

    +Dominate the GMAT Thanks for the explanation. It does makes more sense now. Perhaps, I fail to prioritise the answer choices depending upon what we want achieve. What makes it harder is the ticking clock and a lot of text to comprehend.

  • @dominatethegmat

    +Sunny Mantri That's for sure! Doing all of this quickly takes practice. A lot of it comes down to pattern recognition, too. The more problems you see, the more quickly you'll recognize the pattern of argument you're looking at (and thus can more quickly and accurately identify the author's underlying assumption, which is key to answering a large number of CR questions). I cover all of that in more detail in my CR.Pt.2 lesson here: www.dominatethegmat.com/video-purchase/a-la-carte-topics/gmat-critical-reasoning-part-2/.

    Great Content Bret! One question that comes to mind: Are there are specific type of questions that, with the proper preparation and practice, can and should be answered within 30 seconds?

  • @dominatethegmat

    @dominatethegmat

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Boris Lipsman Yes, absolutely! I can't make any blanket statements about which ones, but often you'll find that you can answer certain Sentence Correction questions in less than 30 seconds as well as certain Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency questions. For example if you see a permutations question and recognize the type it is, you should be able to easily apply the formula and solve it in less than 30 seconds. But be careful! Later in a section when the questions get harder (hopefully! that means you're doing well), remember that hard questions have hard answers. Sometimes you may think there's an easy answer that you can get in less than 30 seconds, but you're missing something important that's making it a hard question. Make sense?

  • @dominatethegmat

    @dominatethegmat

    A is different than E because E says that Ms. Valdez's predecessor acquired the rival corporation "just before" Ms. Valdez took over. Thus, it may have been what was really responsible for the recent success rather than anything Ms. Valdez herself did. "A" simply says that the predecessor's campaign happened "during the tenure." If in fact the advertising campaign had been successful, it should have accounted for larger profits during the predecessor's tenure (i.e. more than 8%). But again, it doesn't explain the "something else" than may really be causing the recent increase in profits, which is what we're looking for.

    Dominate the GMAT True, they don't mention in A when exactly the campaign started so it might have started at the beginning of the predecessor's tenure and then it should have accounted for larger profits. Thank you!

If you take one of my practice tests (www.dominatethegmat.com/gmat-online-practice-test/gmat-online-practice-test/), I can look at your results and help you figure that out as well. In general, if you scored a 500, there's definitely still a knowledge gap you'll need to fill -- probably in all areas. Then, cracking 700 requires really good time management as well.

  • @dominatethegmat

    @dominatethegmat

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yep, that's right. The original argument implies that it was the new president Ana Valdez that "caused" profits to increase from 8% under her predecessor to 15%. However, what if we could show that it was actually something else that caused the increased profits, and not anything Ana Valdez actually did herself? Such a thing would be the "C" confounding variable, and would weaken the argument. Indeed, answer choice E points to just such a "C" possibility, namely that the acquisition of a rival company increased revenue (and therefore profits). Since that happened before Ana Valdez came on board, then perhaps she shouldn't get credit after all.

    Bret, the official guide doesn't have 700+ questions. It has only 600 level questions. So please don't recommend that as the only source for one's preparation. As we start getting 700+ level questions during the exam, some rules like the one's you mentioned for SC don't really come in handy and one needs to have a certain depth of the English language to get those right. So smart won'y really help

    Abhishek Ramakrishnan Thanks for your feedback! In fact there are quite a few 700-level questions in the OG, especially the new 2016 edition. Moreover, there are also some really challenging questions in the other textbook I recommend, the Game Plan for the GMAT. Regarding the strategies I teach, I think the best way to think about them is as tools in your tool belt that you can take out as needed. In other words, they're definitely not applicable on every question you'll encounter on the GMAT, but they help more than you might think. And as I taught in Part 1 of this "GMAT Mastery" video series, there are several key components to dominating the GMAT including strategy, time management, AND content mastery. You're exactly right -- you do have to know certain key grammar rules and "best practices" of English expression to do really well on the verbal section of the GMAT, which is why I teach them in-depth in my GMAT verbal course: www.dominatethegmat.com/video-purchase/full-verbal-section/. Thanks again for taking the time to write and best of luck to you on the GMAT!

    Hi Brett, I got into your website and applied for the free section. But after receiving the e-mail and clicking on it it said that is not available.

    I just took the GMAT exam, but the result wasn't what I expected. How can I master the strategy?

    Sandy Zou There's not an easy answer to that question simply because there are different strategies for different question types. You can master the non-standard math strategies by taking my a-la-carte lesson on that topic, for example: www.dominatethegmat.com/video-purchase/a-la-carte-topics/gmat-strategies-non-traditional-math-techniques/. But there are other strategies for Critical Reading and key strategies for certain Data Sufficiency question types, etc. Your best bet would be to enroll in my comprehensive Full GMAT Course where I cover it all: www.dominatethegmat.com/video-purchase/gmat-online-test-full-course/.

    hey, the reason why the people getting a 700+ score are studying less than the people getting a 600+ score is that a great number of people getting 700+ are really really smart people and they have to study less hours to get a 700+ score compared to other people who have to study more to get a 600+ score.
