MBA Admissions - Myth vs. Reality (with Duke Fuqua)

A lot of business school applicants have common misconceptions about the MBA admissions process. With so much information out there, how can you know what to believe? What's true? What's rumor?
In this video, we break through the noise and let you hear directly from the Associate Director of Admissions at the Duke Fuqua School of Business, Lauren Sutherland. In this "Myth vs. Reality" segment excerpted from Episode 20 of The Dominate Test Prep Podcast, Lauren answers some of the most pressing questions candidates often have about the MBA admissions process, including:
1. Do you have the best chance of being admitted Round 1?
2. Is there anything you can do to get off the waitlist?
3. Do you need a minimum of 2 years work experience before applying?
4. Should you always write the optional essay?
5. Is the GMAT preferable to the GRE?
6. If you can’t score over 700 on the GMAT, is it even worth applying?
7. If you have a family member who went to the school you're applying to, do you have a better chance at getting in?
8. Is it easier to get in if you went to the same school for undergrad?
9. Is your GMAT/GRE score and undergrad GPA the most important part of the application?
10. If you can’t get in to a Top 20 business school like Duke, is it still worth going to business school?

That's something I always used to assume as well (about all of the top schools, not just Duke). Interesting to learn straight from an admissions officer that it's a myth!

Anybody can take the GMAT, and you can do so whenever you think you're ready. While it's great that you're doing private math study, I would also encourage you to make sure you're studying "GMAT math" -- there is a difference. You need to learn the best methodologies and strategies for each of the GMAT quantitative question types. A course like mine will help you with that.

Hi Kaleb! I think she forgot to mention that UNC grads are strictly forbidden on Duke's campus 😉 (jk My brother was a freshmen at UNC when I was a senior at Duke, and he visited me quite often.)

Im James Henry Fuquay. Fuqua and Fuquay is the sane family. But my family in Yuma AZ in history was robbed. For helping the government of a territory before statehood. Your family member James Fuquay was set up and sent to prison to Florence prison. He held me as a baby then committed suicide at Aqua Caliente AZ the year 1964 when i was born. Those Yuma farmers robbed our family. They setup (the judge, police chief and others) but, my grandfather brought out others from Kentucky then to develop farming and river control for the task by the Governor Territory assigned. You want answers. So do I. Id like to a court re establish our families lies interest from these land grubbers and make them eat grass like i had to. .
