GM recalls some electric Chevy Bolt vehicles
General Motors recalled more than 50,000 late-model Chevy Bolt electric cars, citing fire risks. Errol Barnett has the details.

Well there is a special foam out there some departments have for fires such as this but the foam is expensive.
@mariusmcleod2487

@John Dillermand If it's so inexpensive then enlighten me as to why these heavily funded departments don't carry it ? Prime example i worked with a gasoline refinery's own fire department. The foam we had we rarely if ever used it as it was so costly to the point where Exxon told us they couldn't afford to let us use it on fully involved fires. We were basically told unless it's a major fire do not use it.
@Pcarnevaaa

That foam has PFAS. So it’s best to let it burn.
@mariusmcleod2487

@John Dillermand Then you must've had some top shelf stuff all we had was the cheapest stuff Exxon would buy and this stuff wasn't toxic. We used it every time we did training to simulate a major fire if one of the pipes that contained the heated gasoline would happen to get so much as a pin hole. That was until Exxon sent the word down forbidding us to use it because of the cost.

With Tesla as the exception; So far the track record for mainstream EV’s has not been good. Nissan Leaf over promised and under delivered on range of the original Leaf. Not to mention failed to actively cool the battery which led to failure and recall. That was a disaster. Hyundai Kona Ev didn’t even last a year and was recalled and cancelled due to battery fires. Neither did Audi with the recall of all original E-trons. Now the Chevy Bolt, an even worse disaster. Think about how much investment GM made to develop the Bolt and now the will spend $800 million to buyback and recall ALL of them in the US. Not to mention the rest of the world. Any hope of winning people over to EV’s is gone. Do you really think one drop of fossil fuel was saved in the development, production, delivery and now recall of these disasters? Get real. Once the novelty wears off and reality sets in, the green new utopia will be filled with regret. Lol. The snowflakes will demand EV bailouts and ICE incentives.
GM. Park outside! Are you freaking kidding dude, how about you use QUALITY batteries in the Bolt?

His aren’t perfect either.
Between if any manufacturing defects, poor cooling, and the aggressive charge to discharge cycles are likely the reasons for EVs having battery fires short of ending up in a crash as normally it is still pretty rare for lithium batteries to catch fire. I doubt the fault is with the BMS overcharging or over discharging the cells where some of the cells are not balanced inside the pack. I wouldn't be surprised that the cause ends up being a combination of the above especially when there is fast charging involved coupled with inadequate cooling where there are hot spots forming across multiple cells leading to excessive wear then eventual thermal run away as cells begin to internally fail as the short. When everything is done properly by the manufacturer such failures shouldn't happen period from normal and intended use.
These companies don’t care if we die
Gm shouldn't ever build any electric cars. They've been plagued with electrical issues for quite a while in their regular cars.
Its not on fire, its a barbecue smoker, and makes fantastic ribs
I think the this could swing both ways in public and in science. We're probably cramming maybe a decade or few, give or take, of alternative energy solutions into a car overnight and hope for the best🤔 ffs, if only fortune 500 companies saw this coming ahead of time and expanded on their research like they did with finding oil reserves in the oceans.

@@martyh4777 Why?! Shouldn't they master this before the product is approved? Nobody cares to ensure that our safety is #1, the right engineers apparently make a little better money at other places, and if you buy it and then find out nobody made certain your safety was paramount, you can't RETURN it because you were lied to and sold a lemon 🍋, then the company might be forced financially to ENSURE THAT THEY MAKE A SAFE PRODUCT! I realize this is not likely. Buy a Japanese car, made here in AMERICA of Japanese/foreign parts. It's just as American or maybe more, as American cars are mostly made in Mexico before shipping to America for finishing touches so that they can be called "American." Gotta love corporate friendly legal definitions of "MADE IN AMERICA"!!
@martyh4777
3 жыл бұрын
@@cheshirecat4802 You may need to look at this from a different angle. Remember the various airbag recalls, recent suspension related recalls, various other recalls, and even fuel related vehicle fires? Also, traditional cars still face lots of defects, recalls, and risk of injuries, even though traditional car technology is already over 100 years old. Li-Ion battery technology for EVs and such is maybe 10 to 20 years old and as such will still go through various further improvements. Modern Energy battery manufacturers are on the verge of introducing solid-state batteries that will further improve safety & performance. However, humans are running out of time to find ways to lower CO2 emissions and as such we are moving forward with this new technology. However, like everything news, there are risks involved. Even when we go back to horse riding people can die by falling off the horse.

@@martyh4777 You have a good point. I hope the recalls help with future products. It's too bad that this industry didn't get the support it required back in the 70's, when it was believed to have basically been burried by the oil industry. It's unbelievable that the world is so technologically advanced that we can land a craft on Mars but are constantly recalling vehicles and other products for sometime simple, often complex mistakes in engineering or manufacturing. There are too many recalls on what we buy, but this keeps us buying more. Our business model is of course geared towards profit, and it's the only reason corporations exist (officially on paper). I wish they were just as motivated by the welfare of their customers. Call me a dreamer.

GM botched it with the EV-1 back in the mid 1990s. No surprise they botched it with the Chevy BBQ. What it means is that GMs electric attempts are as half baked as most of its cars are. The 2.7 turbo Silverados come in all the time with blown or soon to blow transmissions ( we have to dump special Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in there first and wait till it blows up before we fix it ) there are issues of all our engines eating lifters and valves ( probably cause they make them in China) and GM simply does not use quality parts. The statement garbage in, garbage out holds true
