The Chevy Bolt EV Recall Bonus Nobody Is Talking About
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Bolt EV owners have had to deal with a lot since the LG Chem battery fire issues started happening, but ultimately, GM has agreed to replace all Bolt EV battery packs with a brand new replacement.
So Bolt EV owners get a brand new battery pack with a brand new warranty. That's good news for all Bolt EV owners, but even better news for those that have a 2017 through 2019 model year Bolt. That's because they are actually getting a bigger battery than what came with the car, 66 kWh compared to 60 kWh. A friend of ours, Stan Jaracz, has two 2017 Bolt EVs and both recently received the battery replacement.
We conduct a 70-mph range test on one of Stan's 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EVs with its original battery pack and over 70,000 miles on the odometer. We then repeat the range test one week later after GM replaced the battery pack and we analyze the difference. Owners will find they get a hidden bonus with the new pack in the form of significantly more range than they had with the original battery pack.

I had 120k miles in my old battery, and last week it was replaced with a fresh new battery!!! I had no issues with my old battery whatsoever, but I am glad I got a new battery
Many thanks! I also have a 2017 Bolt and just got the battery upgrade. We live in the central valley of California and have never used a destination charger. From here in Modesto I can drive to the coast and back or to Yosemite and back but was close to zero when I got home. The new battery gives some relief. My wife suffered acute range anxiety. What surprises me is the warmer weather here generally gives my car 4.0 miles per kilowatt hour! Temperature makes a BIG difference. My old hot rod friends have sneered at my Bolt for years but now that gas in California is over $5.50 a gallon I get some respect. Too bad the Bolt is being phased out. I love mine.
I bought my 2019 just a few months ago with the battery upgrade. I love this car. It's a grey premier, and had 18K on it. it was 27K out the door. That includes a dealer bumper to bumper warranty for 150,000 mile unlimited years (We put 100,000 on a new c300 in 15 years so this should be good for around 20)! Thats a steal!!! the only thing I would change are the seats. they are ok, but in fairness, my other car is a 2020 Lexus 300H, so I'm a little spoiled in the seat department... My car is at 4.1KWH. Edit wife normally drives the lexus to work and back and she now uses the bolt on the weekends, so we only have to fill up the Lexus once every 6 weeks. so that was and added bonus. I was filling my c300 2.5 times a month for work, so that saving plus the mileage I get from work is more than the car payment... Plus, I can charge for free at work. This is a free car.
not to mention you had 2 people in the car for the 2nd test. I got my battery swapped in January, cant wait to finally take my 2017 on an adventure.

Impressive. And that’s with two adult men in the car for the 2nd test. I assume one person per car in the previous test, as each man in different cars last week. I drive exactly like Stan. In the winter, I generally only use the heat if it is below freezing after dark and to defrost the windows. During the day with plenty of sunlight, I never need to run the heat in the winter especially if I preheat the Bolt before I start my trip. In my previous 2017 Bolt and current 2020 bolt I tend to average 4.2 mi/kwH in the winter and 4.6 mi/kwH on mostly local driving in Northern Virginia and feather the shifter to maximize regenerative braking and staying below 65 mph as much as possible. Despite the recall woes, the Bolt is still a great car especially at its price point for those us who got them last year when they were clearing them out for the 2022 model year Bolts.

I started with a one-person Myers Motor's NMG, then two Leafs, then a Chevy Volt, then a 2020 Chevy Bolt LT. Today I sit here waiting on a brand new 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV Premium to arrive at my Dealers to do a retail to retail Sticker Swap. YES, my second Bolt, I love my current 2020! Thanks to Chevy for the $1,675 difference in their retail price. I will advance two years to a Loaded (every option say for SC), Bigger, Bolt! The 2021 $5000 Bolt Price Cut paid huge dividends to many of us Bolt Swappers!! The process has been, at times, painful! But considering GM is dealing with 143,000 separate deals, perhaps really not all that bad?? In the end, this issue is paying off in spades for most of us Bolt owners!! And that in a word is... FAIR!
I have a 2017 bolt with the new battery. Although I've owned my Bolt for almost 3 years, yesterday was the first time I took it for road trip. I drove 196.6 miles mostly on the interstate at mostly 65 mph with air conditioning running. Temp was about 85F. I was very surprised I only used 41.4 Kw. that is 4.74 miles per Kw or 210.58 watts per mile. I was showing 90 miles remaining at the end. That is way better than I expected. This was a trial trip in preparation for a 800 mile round trip tomorrow. I guess the colder temps had a significant impact on your test. I plan to document my trip tomorrow and post a video.
Proud owner of 2021 Bolt EV Premium averaging 5.0-5.3m/kw. My car named Mutt has had the range limiting GM update. I am probably last on the list for the battery exchange. With 80% charge (firmware limited) range indicator shows 283mi max. Never use heater as low seat heater and occasional steering wheel heat do the job. Live in SLC & love the Bolt.

I'm picking up a 2017 Bolt with a fresh battery in the next couple of weeks. I'm really excited about it!
Great video, it was exactly what I needed. We just had the battery replaced on our '17 and I wanted to know how far it would go at 70mph so we could take it on long trips. Even better, it was a kind of worst case scenario, i.e., two people in the car, running the heater, and running winter tires.
Just got the 66 kWh in my 2017 Bolt. Could not be happier. Added an average of 20-30 miles to my range. (Edit: Imma feather foot/ efficiency freak)
After I had my 2019 Premier battery replaced with a new one, there was one thing that did not change at all: my unconditional love to my Bolt. :)
I had my 2019 Bolt battery replaced last week. On the way back from the dealership I set cruise to 65mph and drove 73 miles home, that trip only used 25% of the battery (~60F ambient) at 4.5mi/kWh efficiency. After all this time keeping the battery (mostly) between 30% and 80% it was awesome to see a GOM reading of almost 300 miles after recharging at home.
2.6 to 2.8 was always my Chicago winter efficiency but I don't like being cold and I drove my Bolt like a normal car, and I also had changed to all weather tires which dropped it a few miles. But really the new pack isn't all that much bigger, but the new warranty was nice. Hopefully my '17 Premier went to a good home.

It’s encouraging to see GM show goodwill to its beleaguered Bolt community with this replacement/upgrade. Considering how they’re playing catch-up with delivery of a meaningful volume of EV vehicles to market, this is a wise move. The Ultium-based vehicles had better hit the mark, else the company is in for a world of hurt.

This, to me, is the true test of Chevy Bolts and their distance. Every video I have seen has these fools claiming it has over 230 and above for distance when that just isn't accurate even in optimal conditions. Going on the Bolt Reddit forum, a lot of people are screenshotting their dash and it says something lile 300. Almost pissed myself laughing 🤣. This is consistant with what I am getting with my 2020 Bolt. Recently took a trip starting at fully charged for 171 miles, with 25 miles remaining on charge. Warmer weather greatly improves range.

My wife has a 2017 Bolt with 72000 miles and the original battery. The dealership called yesterday and says our turn for replacement is finally here and the new battery is on order. Right now the car is estimating about 145 miles from of range due to the season and the fact that we replaced the original tires with Michelin Cross Climate 2. The original tires had better range but they were awful in the rain, especially as they aged. We were happy to trade range for better wet weather traction. Looking forward to the new battery and seeing what range we get back.
This is quite good for Bolt owners. Because of the degrade of the battery they get more Range than the 10% higher nominal battery capacity. 👍

Very good test and good explanation of how you guys tried to keep parameters as close as possible to those in the test with the old batter. My question is this: With the old batteries, Chevrolet has been advising that you set the max charge to 90% (and more recently to 80%), and that you recharge while it still has an estimated 70 miles or more. Did you guys charge both cars fully before the test and then run the charge state as close as possible to zero?
My 2017 Bolt EV's battery was replaced two weeks ago. After the initial charging break-in period (three charge cycles all the way down to 20%) I did notice a difference when charging and the car was heavier making the car more stable and steer better. I do get more miles all the way up to 259 miles maximum. I love my Chevrolet Bolt EV. I will miss it when I buy the new 2023 Chevrolet Equinox EV RS edition. Its has the same technology as the upcoming Cadillac Lyriq EV but less luxurious but more sporty. I can't wait for it to come out!

I was getting 4.4 mi/kWh back in Sept. that should get me 270 miles with the new battery.
I have a 2021 Premier Bolt (just got it used a couple of months ago with 7K mileage) and don't use the heat much either, even though I'm in MA and it's January. The heated steering wheel and seat are enough most days and they don't seem to impact the range as much as the fan and heat do. Love this car!
My 2019 Bolt has a new battery. This week I saw an estimated range (the middle # on the gauge) of 312 miles. The car is shared with other family members so I can’t report the actual range but that was a surprise!
While I don't own a Bolt my electric used to do 3.9 per Kw with slightly over inflated tires. When I upgraded my Michelin all weather tires to the second generation my average is 4.0. You are right, tires make a difference. I'm thinking that the first test being done when it was colder with one person in the car, having two people in the car when it is warmer might make the comparison a little more even. Nice as the Bolt is it's a little too small for me.

The Michelin CrossClimates with the cool V-tread? I've been looking into them so I can win an argument with my father on whether tires or 4WD make a bigger impact on safety during winter driving.
@lgrantnelson2863

@@h8GW I would say both. Front wheel drive is good in winter. I have found the Michelin Cross Climate to be relatively good in snow. Dry snow good wet snow problematic. I drive a front wheel drive Leaf and have good results. I watched a 4x4 make a left turn and slide into a ditch it couldn't get out of. Caution is the best safety. Overconfidence gets a person in trouble. I wouldn't be concerned about winning a bet. Just get the best equipment you feel comfortable with and drive carefully. The Cross Climate is a low rolling resistance tire that works well on electric cars. Might give better gas mileage also.

I have a bolt, it took the battery about a month to regulate itself and get back to the 50kw fast charging speed. I wonder if these guys tested it later if it would have gone longer. My new predicted range is 254 on a full state of charge now after a month.

Yes it has AI. Can be programmed to extend the range. Adjusts itself to the way you drive.
this is a VERY helpful video. I wonder how much range you lose driving at a more "normal" highway speed of 75-80 mph?
I am looking forward to the battery swap on our Opel Ampera-E (EU version of the Bolt). It might take some time before it is giving you all the kWh. And the fast charging should be better to.
GM sure had a lot of egg on the face after those fires. Nice to see they added 18-24mi range to every older Bolts. Sure wish they had a little larger EV, as the Bolt is just a little too small for me. Pucker effect happens under 5% of any EV when it comes to finding a charger. Great video Tom!

re: "Pucker effect happens under 5% of any EV when it comes to finding a charger" but don't WE the supposedly "smarter than everybody else" EV owners have a LARGE DEGREE OF CONTROL over that...? both ICE and EV have this same "pucker effect" you speak of but ironically they both derive from the COMMON DENOMINATOR of bad planning/bad decision making on the part of the Human driver when he (or she) is seen trying to FORCE A SQUARE PEG INTO A ROUND HOLE (hint: don't drive past 10% in a Tesla or 20% in a CCS). this same phenomena can be observed in GA (General Aviation) when a Pilot crashes their Cessna for nothing more than FAILING to check whether or not their fuel level (before takeoff) would even be enough to get them to their destination airport.

If you want bigger, get ready to spent north of $20k+ more for SUV (Mach E, ID4, model X, model Y). Ok the EV market, none of the bigger cars are affordable for the general public. That's going to be the downfall of EV imo
I had a 2018 Bolt EV purchased in Feb 2018. Then purchased a 2020 Taycan 4S, received end of 2020. With GM buy back I returned my Bolt in 2021 but I always loved it. So happy Stan has two Bolts and 2 new batteries..
In the middle of watching but a difference between the two tests of this Bolt is that the second test with the new battery has an extra person in the car. 😜 Nice to see that Chevy upped the battery size.
Waiting for my battery replacement upgrade!
I'm glad that the new battery packs are better than the old ones, but still not worth the hassle you have to go through to get one IMO I had a 2017 Bolt bought back from Chevy and purchased a new Tesla M3 SR+ and can't imagine going back to that bolt even with a new battery
Nobody talking about it, except everyone in every Bolt forum 🤣

Fair point.
W/o heater the windows on our 2020 bolt tend to fog up in the winter or cold weather( heated seats and steering wheel help to not turn up heat too high) so you do need to run heat to defog windows, which reduce miles. That being said we tend to ave. 275 summer and 210 winter… driving comfortably, 50% highway. Having fun passing gas stations.
I have a Bolt and let me tell you the cabin heater uses an ABSURD amount of power, I've seen it use as much as 8kW. A crying shame that GM didn't elect to install a heat pump in the car which would have provided heat much more efficiently.
@stanislavjaracz
2 жыл бұрын
The cabin heater has 6 kw, battery heater 2kw. 8kw is something you might see if you start your vehicle in bitter cold without preheating. Battery heater would run for at least ~30 minutes, cabin heater energy draw depends on your temperature settings. If you preheat, battery heater would be off (on road) and cabin could be 2-4 kw depending on many factors.
I drive a 2020 Bolt, but haven't gotten my new battery yet. I really have no complaints about it, but I had only planned on keeping it for a year or two until the VW Buzz became available. Now that the Buzz is further in the future, I might get something else before then. The Bolt is a great daily driver, but not quite comfortable enough for long road trips. I'm a native of central Jersey, but have been gone a long time. I can't wait to move back to my home state when I retire.
It's odd that the replacement Bolt EV battery only displayed 62 kWh usable. The 2020+ Bolt EV batteries I've tested have been closer to 65 kWh usable. Also, I'm curious about the conditions. I typically see far better efficiency at 70 mph in average conditions, and with the 2020+ battery, typically about 220 to 230 miles per charge at 70 mph. I'll have my replacement battery soon, so I look forward to seeing more data points.
I hope you do the test in May with all weather tires.
I keep seeing ads for new Bolts because the recall is over. Where is my battery?
nearly 80K miles on our Bolt EV, replacing the Li ion battery through the recall doubled our range
Very informative and entertaining video. While the battery should be able to withstand rare (1-2 times per month) 100% fast charges, how bad is it to drain battery to 1%? Has this test degraded Stan’s new battery or is it fine if the test isn’t repeated frequently? I doubt Stan will let the new battery discharge below 20% for a long time.
It would be interesting to see what % of the battery energy went to climate control from the energy consumption screen. That would give you an easy way to estimate how much more or less range you might get under different temperature conditions.
@dennislyon5412

For a longer test such as this, the climate portion in the Bolt’s center display is about 5 minutes (clock equivalent) on the pie chart, so about 8% of consumption.

I got a new 2021 bolt last year for $27000 after taxes/fees before the recall for it. It's a good car, the info center is slow to connect to phone with USB type c connection. Might be my phone or cord.
This is a well-done and well-presented range test comparison. However, the title of this video suggests that there will be information that is obscure, that Chevy hasn't really mentioned. A slightly more powerful battery with slightly more range, and a full warranty, has been told by Chevy to all Bolt owners from the outset of the full recall. It's the ONLY thing that's been told to us, other than "you'll be slotted for your replacement according to VIN number, so no need to rush down to the dealership". Why would people be talking about this? Came across to me as click bait-ish.
I never use the heat, either, in my 2017 Bolt. I typically drive at 65 mph, and I will "draft". But... my drafting is further away that some typical NJ drivers following distance. I drive 183 miles twice a week as part of my commute and will have 25 to 75 miles of range left over.
Feeling really good about picking up my 2017 in October 2020 for $17k...
I bought a 2022 Bolt EV that was manufactured in 6/2021 and its battery was replaced in 2023.
2 other things that aren’t mentioned is that the DCFC is faster. Not faster peak speeds, but a better curve, especially compared the the “fixed” software update that GM released for the old packs. Also, the output power of the battery pack is better than the old ones throughout the SOC range , meaning it holds a better peak power output on the new pack. With my old 2019 Bolt pack, you could get 160kw peak output from about 100% down to about 92%, the new pack holds that 160kw to about 75%. It holds 150kw down to about 40% whereas the old Bolt pack would only output 150kw to about 70%. The majority of the old battery pack state of charge would only allow for about 135 kw peak power output, whereas the new battery pack will allow 150kw or more output over the majority of the pack SOC. Why does this matter? It makes a substantial difference in acceleration speed. Even with my 2022 Bolt EUV weighing more than the 2019 EV and accelerating a little slower at 100% SOC, it is about as quick as the 2019 EV through most of the pack and even faster than the 2019 EV at lower SOC because the battery outputs more power. Also, back to back testing done on the same day (in the winter) between the stock Michelin Energy Saver tires and Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 winter tires on my 2019 Bolt yielded absolutely zero difference in efficiency. So, some winter tires may cause an increase in rolling resistance, not all of them.
I run my Bolt at 4.1 miles/ kWh. I think motor efficiency drop is huge. Limit speed to 65 mph. I use a heated blanket on my lap, no cabin heater. The pitiful 50 kW charge speed makes it worthwhile.
