When traveling to rural areas, 250 kW DC charging speeds doesn't really matter because the charging infrastructure isn't there to support that anyway. What does matter is range (how far from the city can you go without needing to charge at all) and efficiency (how many miles per hour can you get out of a level 1 or level 2). In situations like these, the Bolt can still outperform many other vehicle models costing several times as much, and I have personally taken my Bolt to several remote trailheads my friends told me they would be afraid to take their Teslas to.

We just did the same thing. My niece needed a new car (old one got hit by a red-light runner and was totaled). We found a 2019 with 21000 miles. The battery was replaced 2 months later prior. The new battery came with an 8 year/100,000-mile warranty. It was just about 21k out the door. I am not sure there is a better EV deal on the market today than the Bolt.

Very practical, smart, and well researched. The Bolt is the best value and a swiss army knife in the EV space. Can't beat it. Road trips are still perfectly doable. Regional trips don't really add that much time to a trip. Long distance trips you will have to add up that additional charging time, but it can still be done. Just plan accordingly. Great choice. Congrats on your new car!

Baby Shark is an excellent name, and this sounds like a great car for the price. I don't rag on the Bolt charging speed, because while it has a relatively low peak, it does better to hit and hold it than some of the newer and more expensive EVs. Congrats Gosia!

@sonnyonny4900 I got the 2023 EUV last November. Used DCFC less than 10 times. And when I used it it's to add range to get to my destination. Meaning, rarely longer than 20 mins plugged in. Really not a big deal for me.

Let me preface this post by saying that I have a 2021 Bolt Premier and I love it. I drove across the USA and Canada last year on a two month road trip, nearly 13,000 miles, and have to say that the time we spent charging got old really quick. There were things that we would have liked to see that we were unable to see because we simply didn’t have enough time because we needed to spend so much time charging. I travel too far and too often to be able to say this is a good road-tripping car. To remedy that, I recently purchased a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 and it is a game changer for my travels. Now the Bolt is relegated to mostly driving within the range of the battery (for me that’s around 300 miles) and will do a fast charge if something unexpected happens and I need more range to get home. Other than DCFC charging speeds and the not very comfortable front seats, it is very difficult to find fault with the Bolt. It is really a gem.

Bought a used 2017 Premium with 82k miles in 2019. Drove it 1500 miles CA to TX and back. It was at 105k miles when the battery was replaced for the recall. Now Im at 110k, and only issue so far was the AC needed a coolant refill. The Bolt is an excellent first/budget EV, and no worries about it being used. Fair journeys!

@@flolou8496 The replacement was due to the recall so the warranty didn't matter. All 2017-2019 got replaced batteries no matter what. What's amazing is that this replacement gives you a fresh 8 yr/ 100k mile warranty on the battery.

I bought a Bolt EUV recently and I love it. I have heard so much negativity about the slower DC fast charging so I was surprised when I tried it and it felt much faster than I expected. I don't plan on taking it on a lot of long trips but the time goes by fast and the car is more efficient than other EVs so while you aren't adding as many kWs as other EVs, you are adding more miles.

Bought a used 2020 Chevy Bolt in February. Couple of tips: - Bluetooth-USB Carplay adapters are great. Mine was about $50. Plugged into USB-A jack in the center console. Needs air on multi-hour trips or it overheats. - Used double-stick tape to put an Apple MagSafe charger just right of the infotainment display. Ran cord to 12-volt USB-C adapter under there. Works great, holds iPhone on potholed roads no problem. No more fiddling with cords! Now I just need to remember to take the phone out of my pocket BEFORE getting into the car.🤣 Love my 2020 Bolt with gray/black interior like yours. Test drove a new 2023 Bolt with the black hole interior, hated that part (and the inflated price). Can’t wait to get the Tesla/NACS adapter!

These cars are SEVERELY underrated. I use mine to do mid range road trips. It's not a problem at all. I fly and rent a car when I want to go further, faster. But I can tell you all that it is the perfect commuter car. As well as a great weekend car for local-ish fun. You can get 240+ miles one way on a fully charged battery if you can charge at destination. I highly recommend this car. Especially if you can pick one up sub 17k. Which more often than not the replacement battery packs they installed, on most Bolts, makes the car younger than the chassis mileage would suggest. Pro Note: Make sure you get the upgraded charging port. It should have the little orange cap at the bottom of the plug in space, behind the charging door. You cannot have them installed later. I searched all over and no one does it. Good luck and have fun!

Great choice, Gosia. I've been driving a Bolt EUV for about a year and it's been a great vehicle for me too. The DC fast charging speed isn't really important. I nearly always charge at level 2 at home and everywhere I go. For the once or twice a year when it is necessary to DC fast charge for a longer trip, I just pack a lunch and have a picnic for an hour while it charges. Not an issue at all.

The Bolt is an excellent vehicle, so GM will screw it up with the Ultium version. Nobody should have any doubts about this. Follow the logic- the EUV version added 200 lbs and, 3” of rear seat legroom, but what was the biggest complaint from customers? .2 cu ft less storage room behind the seats, which was mostly due to the angle of the rear glass. GM has said that they will be making the Ultium Bolt in the EUV body style. Basically all GM has to do with the body is change the rear glass, but they have said that the U-Bolt will be larger. Great fail coming. In GM’s Ultium fantasy world, less battery is more range, note that the cancelled LT1 Equinox would’ve had a 50kWh battery, similar motor, larger size body, and still get 250 mile range like the EUV does with a 65kWh battery. Perhaps GM has decided to make their range estimates more like Tesla’s range estimates. “It worked for Tesla, why not us?” You’re not Tesla, you’re GM, that’s why. Yes, the Ultium battery pack is lighter per kWh than what’s in the Bolt, but the chemistry isn’t dramatically different to the point where it will overcome physics. GM might be able to change the body slightly, reduce the weight of the pack, but not reduce the kWh, and get slightly better range if you believe that GM makes good decisions. This wouldn’t be the GM that I know from history. The GM I know has multiple torpedos snaking towards the Bolt, and the customer will go down with the ship. Just like Ford, GM will certainly play the “Follow The Tesla” game- Ford planned to use Chinese CATL batteries made in a USA plant instead of supporting US based battery startups (or even chemistry pioneers like Lyten’s LiS used by the DOD) because they think that people ONLY buy EVs based on “what is Tesla doing?” They think we are all mindless zombies that follow what polls say even if the poll never gave an option for us to respond to a question like “I’d buy a US made car with US made components for _______ more from a company that was more honest with the range estimate they sent in to the EPA, and wasn’t led by a self-important EV messiah who routinely posts pro-Russia content and actively used his Starlink control to impede people fighting for freedom then falsely blame it on anti-Russia sanctions.” At least I never saw that in a poll. /rant

We just bought a 2020 bolt from Vroom. We were surprised to find out that we were charge limited to around 80%. Chevy's answer is to drive the vehicle 6200 miles and let us know an error comes up that will limit us to 30% and we'll have to take it in for battery replacement which could take a while. Looking for advice. We were also told by onstar that we have to pay $15 per month to use their app. According to Chevy that's not true. We couldn't install the mychevrolet app without hitting the onstar button. Kind of hating this but the car was beautiful when it arrived. Roughly $17k miles on it. We were so excited, now bummed. We wanted the full range to go to Tuscon and back from 100%

The $4,000 tax credit only pays the amount owed the IRS. If you owe less than $4,000, there is no rebate on the remainder. If you have optimized withholding so you don't owe anything, then the the tax credit is $0.

Having tried doing a little road trip in a 2020 Bolt EV last month, the 55kW charging (44kW actual due to crappy 50kW/125A chargers along my route) is painful. Saving $20 in gas isn't worth ~2h of waiting after chargers. If I had made the trip in winter, I would likely also have taken issues with how much battery range gets lost to heating, possibly to the point of adding a charging stop or two. Not a fan of the mushy cruise control and information screen buttons either. Not much else to complain about. BTW, I don't agree with the range gauge being accurate: during my EV trip, my planned return charging stop was 107km away with the bottom range estimate saying I should have at least 135km available. All of the range margin was gone while I was still 25km away. Got to my exit 10+min after the range estimates and a flashing red battery gauge just before the overpass to the charger. Next time I borrow my mother's Bolt EV for a road trip (and help her get through that 10 000km diagnostic run in a somewhat timely manner), I'll read the bottom gauge assuming it is over-estimating range by at least 10%.

Congratulations on your new car, Gosia! I did the same thing, bought a used Bolt with a new battery last March. While most driving is local, I've taken four 185 to 200 mile trips down to Seattle and back without having to charge. This past weekend I went on a 450 mile round trip, including a 4000 ft mountain pass each way, starting from 300 ft where I live. Bolt does great climbing mountain passes and regens a lot coming back down. Consumption was 4.1m/kwh for the whole trip. While I'd like to have 240v charging at home, I'm having no range problems charging with 120v there. Plus there is pretty cheap level 2 charging at some parks and parking lots around town. I've found it an easy car to like, sounds like so far you have too, so enjoy!
