a friend of mine was asked if she knew the difference between a bolt and a screw. i have never been bolted.
There was a thermal mug ad embedded in the comments when I saw this video.. who needs that when you have a bolt?🤣
Awesome. Hope they now go on sale for around 20K brand new.
I was about to buy a used 2017 Bolt in 2020. However, the dealer received a “stop sell” order directly from GM, for the battery recall. I was heartbroken, as I had fallen in love with the car. Within a few months I was at a different dealership, and about to buy a new 2021 Bolt. That is, until the finance guy talked me out of it and into buying an ICE vehicle. I’m still sad out the purchase I made, as I truly am in love with the Bolt. Although my dream car is the Tesla Model 3, the Bolt is much closer to my financial means. However, after seeing this video I am happy I didn’t purchase a Bolt yet.
Literally every car has this problem, but the beancounters say it's $2 cheaper not to put a shield on. It's cheaper to recall the 1 model that actually burns down than spend the money ahead of time on every car made.
For problems with the Bolt the probability is low but the Impact can be quite high, making it a medium risk. From a use standpoint, do I want a car that can only charge at 48 kW? To me this makes it overpriced.
Wow! close one for me. I pick up my brand new 2023 Bolt EV tomorrow morning. Mine was manufactured the week of 10/31/22. You state that this was fixed on all after 10/25/22. Funny, mine is bright blue just like in your video on the assembly line.
Yup LG in one of the companies I don't touch. Everything I ever bought from then dies so soon. Not surprised their batteries catch fire so easily.
I bought my brand new 2018 Bolt for $26500 (after all the tax credit). In 2020 they made a recall for firmware update. In 2021 they recalled to replace the battery. I requested the fix but Chevy said it would take one to two years for a replacement battery. I requested the repurchase and they repurchased it in 2020 for $27000. Glad I sold it back with this news.

I suspect the Bolt, even after both recalls, is still profitable. Just not as profitable as expected. Dunno though. It's a good vehicle in the whole. Assuming it doesn't burst into flames. My niece has one. It's a joy to drive and she loves it. She lives with us in the countryside. ;) The automakers just have to get through these growing pains. pretty sure they are not making any money on that car right now. GM even said they won't be profitable on EVs for a few years
When this first happened GM should have sent Marry out there to say this is a safety issue and GM will be using LFP batteries to avoid the problem in the future. That any future battery technology would have to prove itself to be as safe as LFP before they would use it. The first manufacturer to state this fact will gain huge loyalty from those who follow the EV technology. Ironically it would have also lowered the cost of production.

Seems like a low probability of a fire since it only applies to cars that have been involved in a crash. You have to survive the crash first then worry about a fire. In my life I’ve seen probably a dozen ICE cars on the side of the road burnt up. The concern about EVs catching fire is overblown.

Still plan on getting one in January. It's still half the price of a Tesla and can have vented seating and a camera rear view mirror Tesla doesn't even have. Plus is a more common issue in cars most people don't know this, but the pretensioner in seat belts is an explosive.

Risk of fire, especially lithium battery fire, can set back EV takeup by 5 years. The public won't tolerate the perceived risk. Sure, liquid fuels would burn fiercely but fuel system design largely prevented it. Customer will not tolerate a perceived back step with battery vehicles.

About 200,000 ICE vehicles burn each year. According to the NHTSA, there is a 60% less chance of an EV catching fire than an ICE vehicle. Nissan recently recalled 793,000 vehicles due to risk of fire. Owners were told to park their vehicles outside and away from buildings. According to the NHTSA, KIA and Hyundai had nearly 5,000 fires, 198 injuries, and 2 deaths. Owners were also told to park vehicles outside and away from buildings. 5.8 million vehicles were recalled. Ford recently recalled 518,000 vehicles after reports of 20 fires due to cracked fuel lines. Ford has had several recalls over the past 30 years due to fire risk including unattended vehicle fires.
@tomooo2637

Not only is the risk of fire for batteries is much lower for a battery car compared to a ICE car (see statistics - facts), a petrol fire is defined as "unpredictable and explosive" while a battery fire is "predictable and progressive". What this means in reality is that an ICE car on fire, run, get away, don't go back. In an EV you will have time to rescue the occupants, there will be smoke and flames, but it will slowly get worse but won't explode in your face. So, for most rational people, it is much safer to drive a battery car as it won't burst into flames as often, but if it does (in an accident for example), you are more likely to survive when there is a fire - as you don't have get out in a rush, possibly running the risk of greater injury to the occupants who are already injured from the accident as an explosion could happen at any time, and you won't get a warning. So, do some research, and avoid reading the gutter press who are sponsored by people in the oil insdustry.

@@muskrat3291 The figures don't surprise me; they reinforce the point that the media will highlight ANY problems with EVs but similar problems with ICE are not news. All it will take is one manufacturer stating that they will only use LFP batteries that are not a fire risk to end the debate all together. The hype of maximize range has been made the priority at the cost of higher price shorter battery cycle life and having a fire risk. It is a no brainer for someone to simply say they are 100% LFP today and the future battery technology will have to meet the same safety standards as LFP before getting put in their EV products.

the NHTSA need to get some balls and issue a immediate recall on"safety grounds" for the seatbelts and also issue the same recall for the remaining 35% of fire bombs,it should also BAN all sales of the bolt with immediate effect until the car has been thoroughly retested for both faults @ GMs expense of course, letting them issue a recall on the 8th and GM waiting until now to recall them is tantamount to potential class action lawsuits and vehicular homicide, you brake your seatbelt pretensioner locks and your car catches fire if your unlucky you will burn to death, a immediate BAN is the only way to get GM to take responsibility for there actions nothing else works so far, i mean 35% of car still not fixed after the battery recall ,something is seriously wrong @ both GM & NHTSA
GM should bin the Chemistry of the Ultium battery entirely and switch to known safer Chemistry, their direction seems to be constantly wrong.
General Motors ignition switch recalls refers to February 6, 2014 when General Motors recalled about 800,000 of its small cars due to faulty ignition switches, which could shut off the engine while the vehicle was in motion and thereby prevent the airbags from inflating. How many people died from that? They got out of paying out.
Foil on the floor to match my foil hat. LMAO
Seat belt causing fires? It seems engineering malfeasance to change something like a seat belt that always works with an unknown design that occasionally burns the car down. Seat belts have been mandatory for 50 years so you’d expect GM would not go backwards. Gotta respect Toyota for their approach to reliability. That said, there should be a huge market for a low priced EV for urban use & commuting

Merc introduced the seatbelt pretensioners in 1981. These days pretty much all cars have them. Most of them are of the pyrotechnic kind using a gas generator, much like the airbags they work in close conjunction with. This could have happened to any car, not just to an EV.

Toyota, where the wheels fall off, not sure which is worse.
Chevrolet, come home to a real fire.
Note, this is not a battery issue. It's about a seatbelt pretensioner, a part found in every new car. Also, I can't tell if there have been any fires from this issue. In order for it to be relevant, the Bolt must be involved in a crash that causes a specific sequence of events. "In certain crashes that cause the front seatbelt pretensioners to deploy, the exhaust from the deployed pretensioner may ignite fibers in the floor carpet near the B-pillar." IOW this is not about a parked Bolt spontaneously catching fire. The fix is straightforward, much less involved than the battery pack swap that GM had to carry out earlier. Color me not all that impressed.
An unnamed US carmaker just also placed a large order for new SiC inverter. Do you know more? Will it be Chrysler going for 800 Volt system too?

This doesn't appear to be too complex a fix. From what I have read, all it requires is installing a metal plate to shield the battery. So they won't have to take apart the entire car to remedy the problem. It is inconvenient for owners, but at least the problem has been identified and fixing it is relatively simple. Even if it takes a day, as long as the owner is provided with a loaner, it shouldn't be a big deal. Sounds like something that could have been easily missed in design . Fix sounds relatively simple and has nothing to do with the batteries . If you are buying an electric vehicle you are basically a guinea pig while car manufacturers get real world testing on this relatively new technology . GM like everyone else is playing catch-up to Tesla and they have come a long way by getting in the batters box . The bolt is a nice economical commuter car at a reasonable price in the EV world but it would be nice if they could get a more budgeted and simplified version in a 15 to 20k price range and I think that's what gm is doing is producing a budget EV for the masses . Tesla is actually falling behind GM on this point as Tesla clearly is not interested in this market for now .

I should have thought that GM would have figured out how to make a seat belt tensioner by now; but I figured they knew how to manufacture ignition switches without an auto-off feature, and boy was I wrong. Well, Toyota evidently doesn't know how to make an automobile with wheels that stay on. And Tesla still keeps talking up (and selling for a huge fee) their "full safe driving" feature. I think it was Stellantis that issued a huge recall the other day because of randomly exploding air bags. Jeez.

When a relatively small capacity (small Amp Hour capacity), high voltage battery pack is forced into repeated heavy (high amperage) drain and charge situations, each cell in the pack is repeatedly heated to dangerous levels. Even if the pack manages to not catch fire, premature cell degradation is inevitable. It is GM's overall irresponsibility, poor design and R&D effort, and inefficient vehicle design and shoddy engineering that are the issue. The Bolt is simply too heavy and inefficient in overall design and materials used. It demands too much of the battery pack that is fitted. The fires are only one symptom of the real issue. At the very least, the Bolt needs to: reduce weight (move from steel to lighter materials), and/or it must increase the number of cells in parallel to spread the load across more cells. I doubt that GM will do either because: GM executives are not going to sacrifice any of their enormous salaries towards real R&D and rework of their products. They won't make the pack bigger to better handle the Bolt's demands, because of cost, and because with the present vehicle configuration and design (not optimized for EV application), there's no room for a larger pack. The other way to lower pack stress is to lower the voltage (lower vehicle top speed) in order to increase battery capacity. But is GM going to give up bragging rights/marketability in the interest of safety and longevity? Again, no way. Instead, (as always), GM is resorting to pointing fingers (in this case blaming LG for "defective" batteries).

EV's are a joke - this BOLT vehicle is a "hurry up buy it" waste of money!
Tesla's favorite fan boy seems so elated when non-Tesla EVs have troubles.
It’s funny how you never talk about the teslas that also caught on fire after the hurricane in America 🤡

Not really..tons of Tesla only Bolt is firey hot out there
If these are Ultiums I’m really sorry for GM. I am a Tesla fan but take no joy in seeing others suffer. Unfortunately this could sink them as they have declared them their future. If a Hummer burns? With Musk’s apparent support for sustainable energy I think he’d help but unfortunately the old guard has to exceed with their own rules and can’t be seen to copy the upstarts that fueled the revolution. Watching the reaction of established companies has been interesting. The first one to shout fire was fired! If the established automakers hadn’t declared war things could have gone much easier.
You too, Sam, really now, what are FUD propagaters paying in Asstralia nowadays?
Click bait bull
Electric vehicles are great at burning after a crash. Keeping you warm in the winter while waiting for Emergency Services to show up! Just make sure you can get out before it turns into a bonfire 🔥 because there won't even be any of your ashes left to return to your family. But what the hell, you save $5,000 on Cremation Costs! They should Add that Savings Cost to their Marketing Material! $*000.00 in government rebates plus save $5,000.00 in cremation costs if you are trapped in the vehicle when it bursts into flames after an accident! LoL Or how about loosing 20-60% of your Range in extreme cold during winter months. Oh but it's green...oh really? Mining the materials to make the batteries is Green? Umm what happens to the used and warn out batteries? Stan Meyers Car that ran on Water would be the true green way to go but there is not nearly as much money/Profits to be made off that!!
Buwahahahha
Keep buying the electric junk vehicles!!
Elon gets people to space. I trust him to make my battery pack. Wouldn’t buy a GM regular car much less an EV…

So having a giant methane flamethrower company makes you confident he is a battery expert??? That is some twisted logic from the cult of personality

@@DanA-nl5uo Giant methane flamethrower company? And that is representative of your logic? grossly oversimplifying one of the most complicate tasks ever achieved by man. lol

@@niceguyrides you mean a task that NASA achieved over 60 years ago. How impressive. If only it where 1967 I might be impressed. But when someone claims to care about the climate crisis then starts a company to burn methane at insane rates of speed I am not impressed. His side venture in selling small flame throwers a few years back makes it worthy of pointing out that SpaceX is just a giant size flamethrower company.

@@DanA-nl5uo Again, oversimplification of what Musk had achieved. He has made reusable rockets that can land. He has reduced the costs to send things into space by a massive margin by his innovation in manufacturing. He has advanced AI decades further and He is creating a global system of satellites that will provide internet and information all over the world. Yeah, exactly what Nasa did. . lol All of this privately I might add. As far as burning gas for his rockets. . . yeah, but he is transforming the car, truck, and energy industry to get us onto sustainable forms of energy, which will easily offset what he needs to produce to create other services that can unite and change the world. Yeah, you don't like him. I get that, but you are literally a fool if you do not recognize his genius.
I gave up on GM before their EVs! Tesla in my future!!
But they are cheap.
This stupid LG Chem is effing up the whole industry. They need to get out of this business.
Money is no object for gm, they have plenty, look at gm ceo Mary Bara, they pay her $40 million a year. And for what. Hone many more make that or close to that.
