GM 8.5" REAR END SPIDER GEAR REPLACEMENT

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

My son decided to NOT take my advice when I told him not to keep doing brake stands, so he destroyed his spider gears on his 1993 Silverado.
This is a somewhat step by step process on how we changed them out. I made this video because we couldn't find anything online specific to our truck. Hopefully someone finds this as helpful as I would have had we found it ourselves before working on it.
He drives a 1993 Chevy Silverado with a 305TBI, 3:73 gears, auto trans with 4WD, this is the GM 8.5" 10 bolt rear end.
Please leave your comments below, I'd like to know what you think of my first attempt at a repair video (I know some times I had the camera moving around too much).

I swapped out my spiders on my 72 Chevy C-10. Symptoms were clunking or clanking when you shift into gear (automatic) indicating a bit of slop. When I took the spiders out, yeah, the gears were worn. Truck had over 200k on her but the ring n pinion were in excellent shape, hardly any wear, still smooth n no pitting. The spiders were worn but could probably still run some more. What I found besides the gears being worn is a very loose fit on the pin! The bore in the spiders were wallowed out n very loose fitting bouncing around. They could've broken at any time causing serious damage. The new set with a new pin fit nice n snug, like a wrist pin through a piston! That tightened up my ass end just right. If you really look at the diff, it's not the ring n pinion that move the vehicle. The ring n pinion turn the spider gears, the axles "fit through" the outside spiders with the splines, therefore, it's those small spider gears that move the vehicle n take the load of moving the vehicle. Those 5 lbs or so of spider gears take alot of huevo to move a two ton vehicle. So, with that being said, change the lubricant regularly with a high quality synthetic and follow the recommendations if you have a limited slip posi for lubricants, they may recommend a regular lube with a limited slip additive. Again regular servicing n inspections can save you thousands of dollars while keeping your ass-end tight. One more thing, to line up the spiders, run your hand underneath the diff with a spider gear n put one spider in front of the diff, with the window facing you, now put the other spider gear on lining it up with the bore on the front gear while sighting down the bores. If it looks lined up, it probably is, push the pin through. It should go in with little fumbling n lining up. It may be a little tricky if you have the gears pre-lubed. It's easy. No turning the axles, just line up the spiders front to back. Shifting into gear should be quieter n gear shifts will feel firm. Changing out the servo in your tranny will also give you a big boost in performance n it's a low buck upgrade that will improve shifts n add life to your tranny. Do this before you do a shift kit... Learn well Grasshopper

Take your time and be careful, take note of where you took things off from. The hardest part (besides all the grinding to get the pin out) was lining up the spider gears with the pin holes. Watch your fingers and give the bell a turn to help line them up, it'll be fine.

Good video, I just did a similiar repair on my 03 s10 blazer. I had a hell of a time getting the spider gears to line up after one fell out with the cup washer. I also replaced the axel bearings and seals. After farting around for an hour I finally got them to line up and was able to fit the pin in. How’s the truck running now ?

Yeah...the whole pin bent on us and was wedged in there. It was the biggest pain in the ass of the whole project! Be sure to flush and clean out the diff housing good too. We didn't see a chunk that was hiding in there (probably behind the carrier) a week later my sons rear end locked up going down the road at about 35! Thankfully didn't cause any additional damage, but it would've been better to get it out the first time rather than using more fluid and time...That pesky thing was hiding good!

@@acrossmanoptimal Oh man, I had that happen once in an all wheel drive Honda, like hitting a brick wall. Scary stuff. Mine it seems the bolt backed out, then the pin slid partway out letting the one gear loose and causing the other to shatter, luckily the pin came out with a couple light taps. Just sitting here waiting on parts. Definitely getting a full can of brake cleaner in there and good inspection before I reassemble it. Thanks again for sharing and have a great day.

stacy mccoy nothing major, I'm pretty sure they were tight. After putting in the cupped washers/shims that came with the kit underneath them they were pretty tight. Now I guess if both wheels were pulled all the way out after putting those clips back on the ends of the axles, there would be some play, but I never tried that.

My son decided to do some brake stands and destroyed them. The truck acted as if it was in neutral when in drive, it wouldn't move. I had to put it in 4WD and utilize the front diff to get the truck home, what you see in the video is the first opening and discovering the destroyed gears. I'd get underneath and look for extra play in driveshaft maybe? Other than new diff fluid and maybe a gasket (if you need it), it can't hurt to open it up and take a look. Best of luck!

Yeah, it wasn't fun. But at the same time I'd probably rather grind and swap just the spiders instead of rebuilding another and swapping. No doubt it's easier to rebuild it while it's out, but I wouldn't want to go through the extra work taking the whole rear axle down and put a new one in. The less old rusty bolts I have to try to remove the better. Glad it worked out for you though. I just prefer to fight with it where it is.

Not knocking your video or mechanical skills. But, why not just go on eBay and replace the whole inside hub with a used stock or aftermarket LSD (limited slip differential)? You could have used all of your ring ,pinion gears as well as shims and clips. You would have cut your labor time in half and would have had the advantage or power going to both wheels if you’re ever stuck. And those spider gears would have never broke again. Ever. Just sayin. Either way you did a fine job and made a great video. I subscribed

I didn't want to worry about proper spacing of the ring and pinion gearing thus risking bad gear wear. I just wanted to leave everything all lined up and slip out the old spiders and in the new. An LSD would've been nice, but my son didn't need it (or want to spend the extra money) his 4WD works good enough for the snow. Parts were right around $130 total (Gears, rear cover, cover gasket, and pinion seal which we didn't replace but still have). Thanks for the comment though, I did think of it, but again lining up those ring and pinions can be really tricky, I wasn't looking for a howl or something else to cause me to re-open it. Family life has me too busy to dedicate my 'off time' as a mechanic. I squeeze these projects in when I can and my son had already gone a week without it. Hopefully he'll think next time hahaha.
