Personally i believe one of the best roles of a full back is to always watch your attacking mates mostly... When they're advancing to the opposition goal, you as a fullback have to advance up as well to support the attack. That is why fullbacks like Roberto Carlos, Marcelo, Ashley Cole are considered the best full backs of all time. This is so because they understand that ability that a full back has the most dufficult job on the pitch- track up to support the attack and most times are involved in the goals themselves and when the possession is lost at times, they track back to support the defence. Its all about having that total mental awareness on the pitch. Hope this helps. Cheers.
