    I had this one on my radar for a couple of months. Currently it would be my go to when I manage to get a gpu/new pc. Let's see what this year brings, but definitely great specs for that price and a phenomenal response time + one of very few reasonably priced ~32 inch monitors, which I find weird, because it seems like a much better size for 4k compared to the 27-28 models

    Yes. As mentioned in the review I would leave everything at default. That's how HDR is really 'tuned' to look its best on this model, so no need to change settings. You can tweak according to taste if you like that look, but sounds like you appreciate the natural / default look. 🙂

    I got the Dell U3223QE, completely different 4k 32" target audience, and although I love its build and the colours, I kinda miss all the gaming features that this M32U has. Kinda have a bit of buyers remorse, the U3223QE could have been so perfect for me, but unfortunately it's stuck at 60hz. The M32U comes close enough being one of the few monitors suitable for 1 cable Macbook setups, having dp over usb-c with (only) 15w of power delivery.

    You seem to be describing 'IPS glow'. If you want to avoid or minimise that you'd either need to consider a model with much more complex backlighting such as FALD, which comes at a significant premium. Or perhaps a VA alternative (or potentially a larger OLED screen). There are currently no such options of this size, resolution and refresh rate but the upcoming M32UC could be of interest - pcmonitors.info/gigabyte/gigabyte-m32uc-160hz-4k-va-with-hdmi-2-1/.

    Thanks for a great review with well-explained visual demos instead of a bunch of cryptic charts. I went with the sibling of this monitor, the Aorus FI32U because M32U seemed really "pastic-y" and cheaply built with the power button in an inconvenient place. The FI32U did seem well-built, but it wouldn't even power on, so that killed Gigabyte monitors for me. I like their Aorus Master motherboards, but maybe they should stay out of the monitor space...?

    I've received reports of that nature from pretty much every manufacturer, unfortunately. It's more indicative of the monitor market in general than something Gigabyte-specific... Not that it's excusable. Glad you appreciated the review, anyway - shame the monitor experience was so shambolic.

    Glad it helped. Audio is a pretty personal thing I guess, I find the audio levels fine at the same sort of volume I listen to other videos at (35% with my headphones). The gain can be turned up for the mic which would make it louder - can experiment with that but will have to receive more feedback about it first. I've also had feedback from people saying they appreciate the more relaxing tone I try to go for in the videos and that might be lost if the gain is increased. Appreciate the feedback though, will see what others think. Edit: Have made a poll in community section of channel. So far, overwhelming majority find audio levels fine. Just a couple said they found it too quiet. So I'll either leave it as it is or very slightly increase it.

    This one was a miss for me. I just returned mine after using it for a day. The main problem is quality control with Gigabyte. My unit had two pixels that appeared stuck on dark environments. It also came open-box from Amazon even though I purchased it as new. If you read the reviews, you'll find that dead pixels are a common issue. I would also add that the packaging was poorly done. The screen does not come with a plastic protector (Although it may have been the case that someone already peeled the one off for the unit I used). I was not a fan of the gamer ascthetic. The online photos somehow downplay this aspect of the monitor's design. I would also recommend measuring the size of your desk. If there's less than 30" between the edge of your keyboard and the monitor screen, this might be too large. I'll likely go back to a 27" or perhaps 29" monitor for my current setup. I will say that the screen looked fantastic. I tested it on spreadsheets, and some gaming. If you get a quality unit without dead pixels, this could be a good buy.

    Something to note: the HDMI 2.1 port on this monitor runs at 24 Gb/s instead of 48, which is the max for HDMI 2.1 standard. I don't know what's the reason for that, cost cutting or what... That means it requires Display Stream Compression (DSC) 1.2a for things that require higher bandwidth over HDMI 2.1, which means NVidia 2000 series and up and AMD 5700 and up if you want to fully utilize that port on PC...also, PS5 will have to use 4:2:0 chroma subsampling for 4K 120Hz (but it's not a big deal).

  • @PCMonitors

    @PCMonitors

    2 жыл бұрын

    This is noted in the features and aesthetics section of the written review - pcmonitors.info/reviews/gigabyte-m32u/#Features_and_aesthetics. I didn't feel it was worth explicitly mentioning in the video as it's certainly a minor issue (as you suggest). As a PC user you can simply use DisplayPort instead and any GPU with HDMI 2.1 also supports DSC. For the PS5 the use of 4:2:0 chroma subsampling makes a negligible difference in practice under either SDR or HDR. Even with a side by side comparison, most would struggle to see any difference between 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 in a game or for video content.

    Great review, subscribed. I have a question. Are SDR games mastered for the sRGB gamma curve, which as you know drops at about 30 % below 2.2, or are SDR games mastered for the flat 2.2 gamma? And if SDR games are rather mastered for the flat 2.2 gamma curve, then why is every manufacturer still locking us to the sRGB curve instead of giving us the option to set it to the flat 2.2 gamma curve? This is important to me, because the only way to suitably tame the wide color gamut for SDR content on most monitors is through the sRGB clamp, but as we all know, it makes use of the sRGB curve, rather than the flat gamma of 2.2. This is especially unfortunate for people that game on consoles, because on PC you can calibrate the gamma to a flat 2.2 gamma but on console you’re pretty much out of luck, I think.

  • @PCMonitors

    @PCMonitors

    Жыл бұрын

    '2.2' gamma is what they will usually have in mind when creating their content. It's the standard gamma for Windows PCs and is what most monitors and TVs are ideally calibrated to 'out the box' or with a standard selectable gamma setting. Game developers will usually include a brightness or gamma slider to allow people to adjust according to taste (changing the gamma on the monitor will also do this) and depending on the title will want their game to look cinematic and 'blended' or less so on most screens. Many manufacturer 'sRGB' settings (including this one) will indeed target the sRGB curve, because they are going all out on adherence to 'sRGB' - but not all. In games, this gamma behaviour will pretty much always increase the brightness of dark shades and give a distinct detail uplift which often looks unnatural but some people actually quite like. Unless the gamma slider is changed to circumvent this at the low end, which will also cause excessive depth elsewhere. Really for gaming your gamma setting comes down to personal preferences and I certainly agree it's an annoying thing to have the screen locked into sRGB with an emulation setting. Or just generally locked for the gamma setting.

  • @westernrev9628

    @westernrev9628

    @@PCMonitors The problem is that most good monitors on the market are wide color gamut nowadays, so most of the time, the “Standard” preset is automatically gonna make use of the wide color gamut, rather than the sRGB color gamut. Sure, the “Standard” preset tracks a flat gamma of 2.2, but the color space is wrong for SDR games. To fix that, you are required to select the sRGB clamp in the monitor presets, but this very often comes with the sRGB gamma curve. The new OLED monitor AW3223DW even does this. The “Standard” mode is wide color gamut. To fix this, one has to select the sRGB color gamut under “creator” mode. But now, the gamma tracks the sRGB gamma curve, instead of the flat 2.2. I wish that monitors would have more freedom in changing the settings like on TVs.

  • @PCMonitors

    @PCMonitors

    Жыл бұрын

    Agreed, the restrictions are odd and frustrating. Though with the AW3423DW the gamma behaviour with '2.2' selected in the 'Creator' preset doesn't change compared to 'Standard'. It doesn't track '2.2' but doesn't track 'sRGB', either. And it changes with brightness - nobody has covered this as extensively as us, incidentally - pcmonitors.info/reviews/dell-alienware-aw3423dw/#Calibration . You can also select '2.4' gamma which fixes the issues at the low-end by making things appropriately blended without upsetting the brightest shades either, though you'll get extra depth elsewhere ('medium' shades). This is something Dell will be implementing more on models in the future and the gamma options again include '2.2' and '2.4' etc where '2.2' should be equivalent to factory defaults.

  • @PCMonitors

    @PCMonitors

    HDR performance is covered in detail in the review. Because you have the monitor, you should enable HDR and see for yourself whether you prefer it to SDR. HDR still brings some benefits on this model but is far from a 'true' HDR experience and also causes flooding of dark areas. Glad you're enjoying the monitor anyway - maybe HDR is something you can activate from time to time as it makes things look 'different' and mixes things up. But you'll probably not want it to replace SDR gaming all of the time.

    It is enabled on the system (or game) and the monitor automatically switches to its HDR operating mode. So if it's not enabled on the desktop/menu of a console but is in the game then that will happen. Switching resolutions and refresh rates will do the same, it's entirely normal behaviour and not specific to this monitor.

I do: - gaming - movies/shows - graphics design - video editing Lately I've been obsessing about OLED but then I found out how atrocious it looks on 24p content with the judder and all, and I'm super sensitive to it, and I will in no way use the soap opera filter. Meanwhile, I've never owned an OLED display (aside from my phone) and the new tech seems aluring especially with the lack of ghosting, and perfect blacks.

  • @PCMonitors

    @PCMonitors

    That is certainly a tricky choice. I personally prefer ~32" '4K' models for the superior pixel density and what I personally feel is a nicer size for desktop usage. The LG C2 is also a bit annoying as a desktop monitor due to its aggressive ASBL (Automatic Static Brightness Limiter) and ABL (Automatic Brightness Limiter) behaviour. Of course the image quality is exceptional on the LG and it's great for content consumption. But if you factor in the excellent pixel density and all-round performance the M32U isn't "bad" in that respect, either.

    In my country the M28U, M32U, VG28UQL1A, Neo G7 and the new Samsung G70B are available as high refresh 4k options. I am not considering the G70B because of early reports of screen blackout issues in VRR and I'm not considering the Neo G7 either because of VRR flickering. That leaves me with the Gigabyte and Asus options. In your opinion which one gives the better picture quality in HDR ? Looking at your reviews the digital dimming on the Asus does look distracting at times however I am getting the impression there is more depth and contrast to the image compared to the M32U because of that. The camera recording may be deceiving me. After my terrible HDR experience on my main monitor Samsung CRG9 (49" VA, HDR1000, 10 zones) I perhaps shouldn't even be looking at HDR performance in these cheaper monitors. However, I am willing to give it a try because Samsung's implementation is wrong on so many levels (dimming zones turn on to near full brightness even with a single dust particle in the zone leading to horrendous blooming, tone mapping is also completely off). Perhaps I may like Gigabyte's smoother dimming approach?

  • @PCMonitors

    None of those monitors are worth buying for HDR, quite frankly. Screen size, overdrive flexibility and overall performance make the M32U the best option in my opinion, hence the recommendation - pcmonitors.info/recommendations/gaming-monitors/. The only reason to buy one of the smaller models would be if you specifically prefer the smaller screen or can't accomodate a larger screen on your desk. Or you don't want to pay more (if you have to) for the larger screen.

    @@PCMonitors thanks for the response. This monitor will be for my summer house where I do have the desk space for a single 32". The reason I was also considering 28" was because I also have a 24" 60hz panel there and the ability to portrait the VG28UQL1A in a dual monitor setup (I'm a coder) was also attractive and would save me the hassle of trying to sell off the older 24" to make space for a 32". I'd advise reading/watching both reviews or at least the conclusions. Also note that only one of those models gained our 'recommended badge'. Main reason for that is that the larger screen at the same price is certainly better value and generally considered the 'sweet spot' for this resolution - paying the same for a smaller screen with basically the same image quality and performance characteristics, you should feel short-changed. Unlike with lower resolution panels and the size comparison, the pixel density is still very high in both cases so the size differences don't translate into such obvious clarity or detail differences (refer to the '4K experience' section of the Gigabyte review for example - pcmonitors.info/reviews/gigabyte-m32u/#The_4K_UHD_experience. They're both panels from the same family (Innolux AAS) with a very similar backlight. The other aspect is pixel overdrive and enforced overshoot at lower refresh rates such as 60Hz on the Acer and others using its panel, an issue the Gigabyte M32U doesn't have.

Is it best to have Overdrive turned off when playing at 30 fps? Should the console refresh rate be set to 60 Hz or 120 Hz at 30 fps? I play on Xbox Series X

    You could try leaving 'AMD FreeSync Premium Pro' off but having VRR selected on the console, then the monitor should use HDMI 2.1 VRR without Adaptive-Sync/FreeSync. It may work better for you. But either way, if you're using VRR then the monitor should stick to 60Hz for 30fps content and you shouldn't get tearing, specifically. Maybe it doesn't work properly with that game or the Xbox Series X doesn't use VRR for 30Hz content (I'm not sure - I don't own the console). I'd recommend leaving overdrive at 'OFF' for such refresh rates, yes.

    Switching from a VA panel to IPS, how big is the contrast difference? Does it hurt content like anime?

  • @PCMonitors

    @PCMonitors

    It is highly depentent on lighting and the content you're viewing, really. Anime is generally preferred on IPS models due to superior colour consistency, which is generally more important than a higher static contrast ratio for such content.

    HDR is explored in detail in the review. As for benefits for anime, the more accurate colour gamut usage mentioned in the review would apply there if it's HDR content. But a lot of anime will be SDR.

    So you're happy and wouldn't want anything else that's out at the moment? I hate looking for monitors because most reviews just talk about numbers and in doing so makes me pass up certain models and make me think I need to keep spending more to get a good item. Would you be happy buying this again or would you spend a bit more for something else right now, do you think the lg32gq I worth the extra 300ish dollars?

    To be clear, this was a review sample sent by Gigabyte and not a monitor I purchased myself. I recommend the product based on the findings in the review and positive feedback received by others, however - pcmonitors.info/recommendations/gaming-monitors/. I wouldn't recommend the LG alternative, no, because its main selling point is DisplayHDR 1000 support. Yet it offers a weak performance there due to offering a very limited number of dimming zones for such a brightness level. That's the main thing you're paying for with that one and I don't feel it's worth the premium.

    In some ways yes (cheaper, better pixel responses, less extreme gamut may suit some), in others no (narrower gamut, worse HDR performance). The comparison linked to in the video description covers it - forum.pcmonitors.info/topic/high-refresh-rate-32-4k-experience-fi32u-and-others/page/2/#post-67718.

    This is covered in the contrast section. You're better off with bias lighting or some lighting behind the monitor, same with any LCD really (especially IPS). But as with everything, it's subjective.

    Yup, you should enjoy the experience at 120Hz. But when you say "VRR works well" that implies you're not expecting to stay at 120Hz. So you need to be aware of increased overshoot as the frame rate of the content dips.

    Well overshoot levels are increased and it's entirely subjective whether you'd find that bothersome. They aren't extreme ~100Hz, they're much stronger by ~60Hz.

    It will make no difference whatsoever, per the written review both were tested and the monitor performed the same - pcmonitors.info/reviews/gigabyte-m32u/#Calibration: "Our test system uses Windows 11 with an Nvidia RTX 3090 connected using the supplied DisplayPort cable. Additional testing was performed via HDMI and also using an AMD Radeon RX 580, though observations on this table didn’t differ significantly between inputs or GPUs." So if you're using HDMI 2.1 you can continue to do so, not an issue.

    Do not misinform viewers, a calibrated VA like the m32cu will track gamma prefectly and will have no issue like hiding shadow detail

  • @PCMonitors

    @PCMonitors

    Жыл бұрын

    That's not correct. There's a difference between the gamma which a device touching a small point in the centre of the screen will read and the gamma your eyes perceive. You sit some distance from the screen and with ~32" screens in particular your eyes subtend a wide range of angles viewing the centre vs. edges of the screen. A degree of 'black crush' centrally and loss of saturation (lower perceived gamma) peripherally can't be corrected with calibration, because they're viewing angle related limitations which exist from a normal viewing position. You can overcompensate by using a low gamma or having gamma tuned to be lower at the low-end of the curve, but this still leads to variable visiblity comparing the centre to peripheral sections of the screen. For reference, the M32UC performs similarly to the AOC CQ32G3SE in terms of gamma consistency - pcmonitors.info/reviews/aoc-cq32g3su-cq32g3se/ (re. black crush see visual demonstration here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/iZynktyHqMbPgsY.html ). It is certainly superior to earlier VA models in that respect and things are much more consistent. But there are still shifts which you would not observe on an IPS model. There is still a degree of 'black crush' as perceived gamma is raised in the central region for very dark shades. And there's a relative reduction in perceived gamma peripherally. Sensitivity to such issues varies, but denying their existence would be "misinforming viewers".

    Apples to oranges and honestly a bizarre comparison to make. The AOC has stronger contrast and a wider screen with 21:9 aspect ratio, plus a curve if you like that sort of thing. It has inferior colour reproduction (particularly consistency), vastly inferior pixel responsiveness, inferior VRR performance, an inferior resolution, smaller screen height, a stronger screen surface which impedes the image to a greater degree and a significantly lower resolution and pixel density. It's a completely different monitor which will appeal to a completely different user.

    That looks pretty faint in the photo to be honest. It appears to be one of the dimming zones, which probably shouldn't be visible given that it's only one isolated zone. But it could be the algorithm getting a bit confused due to the very thin white stripe at the bottom being the only bright content there. Do you notice this in other scenes, including very dark scenes without the thin pure white elements as well? I'm also assuming you've got 'Local Dimming' enabled here - if not then it is a uniformity issue, though if it's as faint as it appears and is only visible in certain cases I don't see it as a major cause for concern anyway.

    If it's as faint as it looks in the image, I'd just live with it really. There are quite a few potential unformity issues and other issues that can affect any monitor (not just this one). You may receive a unit without that issue but something worse? Honestly, it's quite a lottery. :)
