Gigabyte M32U Monitor Review - 4k @ 144Hz and HDMI 2.1!

Ғылым және технология

The Gigabyte M32U is a 32 inch 4k monitor with a fast 144Hz refresh rate. It's very similar to the smaller Gigabyte M28U, but there are some minor differences between them. It's one of the few monitors with HDMI 2.1 ports, making it an excellent choice for console gamers, as it can take full advantage of most of what the Sony PS5 and Xbox Series S|X have to offer, including 4k @ 120Hz gaming. It also has a few extra features designed for productivity, including a built-in keyboard video and mouse switch (KVM), so you can control two sources with a single keyboard and mouse.

Great review, I really like how you offer a brief explanation of what each spec means before talking about the product itself. So many of these tech channels assume 100% knowledge and just start rattling off numbers, terms and acronyms that make no sense to the casual consumer.

It's honestly kind of hard to really find a monitor that's better than this without really going up in price. It just seems so well rounded. Like you can go up a tier to a Samsung G7 monitor for better HDR, but then you're dealing with the downsides of a VA panel with inevitable ghosting on dark colors and flickering and low FPS. Wish we had more OLED/great HDR monitor options for 32 in monitors without totally breaking the bank. It seems only ultrawides are getting great OLED/HDR options at a decent price right now.

from what I have learned, this glass is cut by the thousands and they are cut from big chunks of 'mother glass.' The amount of different combinations of screen sizes (different inch-sizes) is what determnines avalibility and price. This is also why 16:9 became so prevalent, it simply costs a lot to make different sizes deviate too far from the mold.

The Samsung G7 4k 28 inch is the same price currently. Its has lower HDR at 400 but overall a better monitor. Its getting a lot of slack for making so many sacrifices compared to last year’s 1440p mode but it is on par with the ASUS model except it has less ports. There is a reason the Gigabyte monitor is $650 MSRP don’t be fooled.

I am trying to choose between M32U, M32UC and M28U. Mostly, I would like to try a curved monitor, but I didn't see many videos about that monitor. In my country the M28U is 500 euros, the M32UC is 640 euros and the M32U is around 700 euros. What do you say? I mostly play games with story: RDR 2, GTA V, The Last of Us etc. And I often play PUBG. For FPS games, I think a smaller screen is better because you don't have to move your eyes so much. But for story games, I think the 32 inch would be better. My GPU is 4070ti. In future when the GPU will get old, I will need to put the resolution at 2K. I don't think that 4K on 28 inch is so good, but also 2K on 32 inch isn't as good as 2K on 28 inch. What would be your advice?

In order to get my M32U monitor to properly display HDR with my NVidia RTX 3080 Ti, I had to make a bunch of changes in the NVidia control panel. First Make sure to use the 8K Display Port cable included with the monitor. In the control panel, go to the Change Resolution Tab, set the native 38040 x 2160, change the refresh to 120Hz (my choice) or 144 Hz. In #3 ALL of the settings need to be changed. Use NVidia color settings, Highest 32bit, 10bpc color depth, RGB color format, and Full output dynamic range. Then Windows 11 HDR worked properly and is definitely better than non-HDR.

The USB upstream connection transfers these signals from the PC to the monitor via the USB-B connection, but as you only have one of these, the second PC/laptop would have to connect to the monitor via the USB-C port, which as far as I know only works with a Macbook with a Thunderboolt cable if you want full KVM.

From another review: "A pair of HDMI 2.1 can also get the monitor up to speed, but will be limited to 4K/120Hz with 4:2:0 chroma-subsampling on Xbox Series X and PS5. That same limitation didn’t apply when I connected over HDMI to an Nvidia RTX 3070." --- Sounds like on console you must run "4K/120Hz with 4:2:0 chroma-subsampling". I guess that means those consoles don't have HDMI 2.1 ports?

Thanks to the inclusion of HDMI 2.1 bandwidth ports, there's no difference in the supported formats between DisplayPort and HDMI, as long as you're using a source that supports HDMI 2.1 bandwidth. If you're using a graphics card that only supports HDMI 2.0 bandwidth, the supported formats are a bit different over HDMI (but that doesn't appear to be applicable to yours). So, you're good to go either way!

Thank you for this review, it seems like there is not much choice right now if you want a 32 inch 4K 144 hz refresh rate monitor right now. I just bought the Alienware Aurora R14 desktop and need to purchase dual monitor screens for it but am having trouble finding two monitors that have true 4 K 3840x2160 resolution along with 120 hz or greater refresh rate which is what attracted me to this monitor in the first place. However other websites say this monitor had limitations to its color gamut along with the issues you also notice in this video. My new computer arrives in February 2022 so I have these next two months to shop around and compare before making a purchasing decision. Should I wait for CES 2022 to be over first hoping they show off something better before deciding on two monitors to buy or just go ahead and buy two of these? Hi , I have the m28u wich is exactly the same monitor but 28 instead of 32. Idiot me didn’t knew there was a 32 inch model haha. It’s been 5 months so I’m guessing you’ve already made your choice , but just in case it might help: If you want the monitor for both your pc , and your console , this one is just great. And works perfect with the series x. The best bang for the buck in the 4k segment. If it is only for your console , I recommend buying an LG oled c1 48 inch tv . Perfect blacks , REAL hdr, almost 0ms response time , No input lag whatsoever. It’s just the king of kings. Static images on a computer desktop , like task bar etc , are dangerous for oled , because they are burning material. But in a console you should have no problems with burning . Wich is the reason you don’t hear mention okey as a computer monitor option very often. It is the best , but it comes with a big burning danger. On console , as a tv , it’s just fine.

If your graphics card doesn’t support HDMI 2.1, the HDMI 2.0 bandwidth limitations apply. However, it might be worth mentioning that in some cases with HDMI 2.0 or a DisplayPort without DSC), it might be possible to run the monitor at 120Hz or 144Hz at a lower resolution (1440p or 1080p), but we haven’t tested that.

This isn't noticeable with most content though, so it shouldn't be a real issue for most users!

My thoughts: I was using a 4k 32" Dell U3219Q monitor for work, which has an excellent picture but was fixed 60Hz. I knew I couldn't go down in panel size or resolution once I experienced that, but I was worried about the compromise in picture quality in going for a 144Hx VRR panel. I viewed both panels side by side with a duplicated display for comparison. The out the box settings weren't great, the picture was way too warm and dim, but after a few hours trying out different settings I was able to get the colours to better than what I had on the Dell. Red was reduced to 92% and Green to 86%, and brightness increased to 90%. There are also six colour channels and I made some minor changes to hues and saturation in some of those but that's a personal preference. The only issue is white text on a black screen isn't as white and crisp as it is on the Dell, the whites aren't quite bright enough, and nothing I tried could fix that. Also sharpness could be very slightly better, but only noticeable when having the two screens side by side. It's the compromise that has to be made at this kind of price point. The VRR works well with my Nvidia 30 series GPU, no complaints there, though apparently it doesn't work below 48Hz. I don't tend to touch the other settings, though I've turned Overdrive off. I noticed in MS Flight Sim there was massive ghosting on the clouds. It mostly disappears when I set it to Picture Quality, but I don't play superfast games so I just switched it off completely. I haven't bothered with HDR. Build quality is good, but the large v-shaped feet are bigger than they need to be, preventing you from getting the keyboard as close I would like. The rough plastic effect gives it a bit of a cheaper fill, smooth would have been better. Also the 'chin' at the bottom of the panel is too large, it would have been better if they'd used the same slim bezel at the sides and top. Otherwise the design is nice and simple, no unnecessary fancy lights or features at the back. The OSD has a comprehensive set of functions such as the six channel adjustments mentioned above, though this is not available in all modes, so I used one of the three Custom modes for my preferred settings. The joystick at the back of the panel can get a bit tiring to use if you're spending more than a few seconds making adjustments, which is where the OSD Sidekick software is useful. You'll also need that to update the firmware. Note, if you want to use the KVM I believe you can only do this with a laptop that supports video and peripheral signal via a USB-C cable, like a Macbook Pro, and you'll need a Thunderbolt cable to do this, and these are not cheap. A normal USB-C charging cable won't work.

Browsing the cables on Amazon it looks like some DisplayPort 1.4 cables don't support above 4k 120Hz, meaning 144Hz might have issues? Might help if the cable is VESA certified. Does the monitor come with a DP cable, and if so is that the one you're using?

@@Fuze626 I'm just assuming the cable might be the issue based on things I've read in the past when people were trying to get 1080p FreeSync monitors to work right, and them having the screen go black as probably the main symptom, when DisplayPort was still pretty new to the general public. Did you confirm the 2nd DisplayPort cable you used does support 144Hz at 4k? I'd probably talk to the manufacturer or seller, could be the monitor has an issue. My experience with Gigabyte monitors, is that the quality control is atrocious. Light bleed, dead pixels, buggy software. I had to RMA one four times, and eventually gave up. Sure it's cheaper than the competition. But it's at the cost of poor QC. Too bad, because GB monitors tend to have the bells and whistles one would want.

The 2nd and 3rd monitors had clusters of dead pixels.
