It would be helpful if you talked a bit about how the hoof came to be in this condition. I have never seen this sort of "compaction" in a hoof. Is it natural or an issue of care? How can it be avoided? Thx.

If the hoof was hard and dry, it's likely the horse developed a small crack and just chipped the hoof off on something. He also mentions that the horse has a thin wall, so its even easier to crack/chip the hoof

First time I've seen the trick with the blow torch to soften the sole, Iwas taught by my Grandfather who used a heated iron plate for the same effect, and I agree that your students should know how to form a shoe from scratch, premade shoes will not always give the desired result, If I happened to be starting my career again now I'd be considering Farrier/Blacksmith as I think the crafts could be needed in the not too distant future.

Yes, I don't the think a horse would have the patience for being in a crush. They're wired differently and would go ballistic. Cows are more Zen.
