    The whole captain vs pilot is complicated. A captain controls the ship when not in harbor, and then there's a maritime pilot, who navigates the ship through ports via tugboat. And then there's a helmsman, who is a dedicated part of the crew whereas a captain isn't always assigned to one particular ship (commerically speaking). EDIT: As of Feb 25, gold is a little over $1,300 per troy ounce. A standard gold bar, the Good Delivery bar use to trade internationally weighs 400 troy ounces and are 99.4% pure gold. Since the registration marks are ground off, the gold is no longer legal to cash in. I assume you _could_ have them smelted and then made into legal bars but you'd have to find a guy who'd do that.

    I always interpreted Ferryman as being a modern day Charon. That's why he always used ships/boats as his method of trapping and getting souls. The gold is indicative of the coins he was paid to ferry the dead to the Underworld. In the end of the film, you can see that her old crew are now working for Ferryman ushering the gold onto the new "vessel."

    Fun Fact: in the Original script, it was everybody getting decapitated, with Katie's hight being the reason why she survived. (They kept that in the movie) But the Producers said "No. More Gore." The one thing I would change about the original opening scene would be how Katie survived, and how the Captain got cut at the Jawline. You cannot tell me that this 8 year old girl is shorter than everybody's waistline and you cannot tell me that the captain is so short that his jawline is at waist hight. So I would Have Katie trip while trying to stay in sinc with the captain's waltz, and when she trips, the Capitan neals down to help her get up. Then thats when the cable slices everybody in 2. When Everybody falls apart, and as Katie relized what happened, feels something on her hand she lifts her hand up to see scarlett blood. She begins to panic. And to put the icing on the Cake, she looks up to the Captain, as the line of blood slowy begins to from around his mouth. We see the blood slowy begin to leak out of his mouth, and come out of his nose, then we see as his head slips off of his jawline and onto the floor. This might be overkill but scew it. Then the Captain's head lands on Katie's lap. As the rest of his corpse falls onto the bloody dance floor. Overkill...? Hey its a horror movie.

  • @thatinnocentperson3649

    @thatinnocentperson3649

    3 жыл бұрын

    It's said that the Captain bent down to protect or talk to Katie and was only chopped in the head because of that. I'm not sure why she wasn't killed because she was obviously tall enough. Also, the reason they couldn't use decapitation was because apparently they weren't allowed it; in the behind the scenes (of Ghost Ship) they talk about how weird that rule was. Now that I think about it, Katie was shorter than the people's neck and her surviving would've made more sense if they had used decapitation.

    If it was set up at neck height though that would have only lead to even more people complaining about the movie saying not everyone is the same height so how come everyone was decapitated. Like someone 5'10 and someone 5'6 will have their necks at very different heights.

    Julianna Margulies WAS famous at the time of this movie. She was one of the original stars on ER and had won an Emmy for the role. Ron Eldard was her real-life partner for 11 years and was also somewhat known at the time as he had a recurring role on ER and the glossy magazines used to try to get pictures of them together. When they signed up for the movie, it was called Chimera (might not be exact spelling?) and it was about a crew becoming trapped on the sea together and followed a "Lord of the Flies" type of plot where different members of the crew responded to the isolation in varying ways. Some went slowly insane and turned on the others. It was a psychological thriller and had nothing to do with ghosts. When Julianna and Ron arrived on set they handed them the "script revisions" and it was suddenly titled "Ghost Ship" and was a supernatural movie which barely resembled what they had signed up for. They tried to get out of it but were locked in by their contracts. Julianna still gets pissed off if you ask her about it because she really loved the original script and felt duped.

    He is definitely the Ferryman Charon, and considering he is paid in gold coins for passage that could have been his gold to begin with. Haven't watched any official explanation videos for Bye Bye Man, but the way the coins are portrayed in that movie and the title makes me think it was also lightly based on the Ferryman.

    So, they changed the script a lot. Originally, they wanted it to be "The Shining on a boat" basically a psychological thriller where the captain(Gabriel Byrne) was gonna be the crazy one killing everyone. That's why Julianna Margulies signed on to it. But when she showed up to film, the whole thing had changed, but her and the other actors were contractually obligated to do it.

    As much as I don't like remakes, I feel like ghost ship would actually benefit from a remake, fixing all the plot holes and using practical effects instead of shitty 2000s cgi. Hell, even if they don't use practical effects cgi tech is waaaay better now and, if mixed with practical effects, it could easily be amazing. Enough people absolutely love this movie despite its glaring flaws and 2000s cringe, with some people specifically loving it for its many flaws. This movie deserves to have the script cleaned up a bit and get a remake.

Ferrymen are corrupted souls punished to bring souls to a resting place.

I Know that its most likely that she didn't sail fully booked, but I would guess the Graza had mabey about 850-1000 Passengers and crew on board. The Andrea Doria (The ship that the Antonia Graza was based on) was also 701 feet long. The Titanic was 882 3/4 long. So the Antonia Graza was pretty big for an Ocean Liner.

    Kudos on a podcast well done. Once again you two are awesome!! I saw Ghost Ship when it was in VHS format and I still believe it was a good horror movie. The "new guy" is a demonic soul collector looking to fulfill his quota. He lures unsuspecting victims with tainted pasts with the gold as bait and then kills them to collect their souls. Demons are known for their deciving skills of shape changing/morphing to lure victims into death traps. The ghosts of the "marked" victims (people who have done terrible deeds in life) are under his control, since he's able to claim their souls by killing them afterwards (in the same style as the Joker did in "The Dark Knight" movie). This movie is similar to The Dark Side of the Moon, where a demonic entity tries to collect 666 souls, only to be stopped by his last victim. In theory, that is probably the quota for "New Guy" entity to collect for "upper management", as by contract for possibly eternal life. True, it is a strange, but interesting concept, but a very good horror story in all. Also, "The Good Wife" is the head nurse in the TV drama series, St. Elsewhere back in the early '90s. Keep up with the great work. I truly enjoy watching the Deadmeat podcasts and kill counts!!!!!

    Ok, so the thing is, with the pool scenes and all the bodies in them, there are three possibilities: First, they are a hallucination/manifestation of the evil spirit that's taken over the ship; not actual people who die. Second they are the souls of people who have been claimed by the spirit over it's entire career spanning thousands of years. You wouldn't count them since they were dead before the movie started and if you did you'd have to count every cemetery that appears in a movie. Third (and I think I remember seeing a making of that said this was true, but I could be wrong) the bodies are the same as the ones from the initial sequence, so they would've already been counted. But mostly the series I'd love to see you do a Kill Count on someday is Wishmaster, mostly for how wacky it gets in part 4.

    So, based on my research a gold bar in 2002 is roughly priced, $136,059. The price of the gold bar was based on the average price of Gold per ounce in 2002, and average weight of a gold bar (*438oz). So, depending on how many gold bars there was in the chest it’s easily possible to reach Gabriel Byrnes estimate.

    I'm definitely nostalgic for this! 2002 was the year I was finally getting to an age (early tweens) where I could handle watching horror movies. Me and my friends did that thing that, Chelsea, you mentioned you would do with your friend--we would basically retell horror movies to each other beat by beat and still get super scared. 'Ghost Ship' was one of those movies I knew everything about before I ever saw it, and the gore took on a pretty legendary quality in my young imagination. Looking back on it, it's pretty damn dumb. I can kind of respect the angle it took with devilish influence and greed, but yeah, way too convoluted and rushed a reveal. But that early aughts editing and music... *chefs kiss*

    One of my best friends was a digital compositor on this movie and it was for that reason alone that I went to see it in theatres. After I saw it and told him it was super cool to see his name in the credits he actually got sort of perturbed and told me that if people keep paying money to see bad movies they will just continue to pump them out thus dooming people like himself to work on them in the future... hahaha. He eventually thanked me for saying it was "super cool" that his name was on a big screen. He would then go on to become a lead compositor on all three Matrix movies, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, two of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, two of the Star Wars prequels, all three of the Hobbit trilogy, and Avatar. And now he is making his own animated full-length feature. Guess we all have to start somewhere, haha. Now we get together at least once a year to watch, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Ghost Ship, and Ninja Assassin to commemorate the times rent and bills meant you got up, rolled up your sleeves, and did the work. And you do the work because it keeps you in the game with the aim of landing that great project on the other side of the slog. Good times. Thanks for reviewing this one, lord knows (as do he and I) that it's not an easy one to get through!!

    I thought it was pretty obvious that "new guy" was an entity of some sort that only inhabited the body of a human to be able to operate amongst them and manipulate them. So to say "he wasn't dead yet so how could he make the hook move to kill Francesca" seems like a weird question. He's probably been claiming lives in this manner for quite some time, as we already see by the dead bodies piled up even as recent as a month or so prior to this crew appearing. So he as a soul snatcher would have always been able to move things both now and then because he's never been alive...
