PS - honest, tough love is okay too! It’s okay to tell them the truth about their food, be honest and let them know that’s it’s because you love them - period. When we know better, we do better. It doesn’t have to be a long drawn out process, sometimes life jut is what it is.

Yes please! We are also making this transition but it sometimes gets so overwhelming with my kiddos. I too, wish I had implemented this when they were younger! I think the hardest part is when they are out with their friends or at school there’s just junk food and sugar all around them. We’re good when we’re at home but it’s when they are out and the temptation is everywhere!

Yes!!! Please let us follow along with your journey! I am currently on this journey with my kids, and it’s hard. And I often feel guilty for not being “fun.” Like yesterday at our homeschool co-op, they were giving away boxes of freeze pops, and my daughter said, “Mommy, I wish we could get some.” And I wanted to say yes. But then I thought, “what good would those do my kids?” So I told her I understood that they were tempting but we can make our own popsicles out of fruit juice and that the store ones had bad dyes and were all sugar, and they’d just do bad things to our bodies. We want our bodies to work the best they can, the way God designed them! But it’s so hard when everyone wants to give your kids a sugary treat or snack. How do we make it fun for them?

For us, its always been a budget thing. Individually packed, nutrition-light (as opposed to dense) snacks are really expensive pound for pound when compared to things like home dried fruit, home popped popcorn, home baked cookies (more like breakfast cookies, not talking frosted sugar cookies here). However, in an attempt to get away from giving Thing gifts that eat batteries, collect dust, take up more than their fair share of space, we moved to things like favorite soda pop, favorite candy, favorite cookies for *some* birthday and holiday gifts. We still buy ice cream (husband's fave). We still make instant pudding. Our kids don't go without treats. I have tried to have a balance because growing up I had a friend whose mother was hardline about "unhealthy" foods in the house. Not allowed. I'll leave it to everyone to understand what happened once we were old enough to earn babysitting money and head to the mall/Target, etc. with it. When were old enough to drive, it got worse. Then I found out a younger sib was asking for things to be snuck in 😢 It is so hard to live in the gray, but I think it may be essential to raising balanced kids. Good luck on this journey! You made an excellent point - when we are used to things that are grab and go, and we want to pivot to things that are not naturally that way (I'm looking at you large, whole carrots in 2 pound bags!!), we may want to do some prep work to make them be that way!!

This is a great idea. Think about how much less trash you’ll generate too. When my kids were younger I would never buy prepackaged snacks. I always portioned out each serving. Plus it was so much cheaper that way. I also made a lot of homemade snacks. Once your kids know what the ingredients are doing to them, they’ll look at them differently.

I'm totally down with hearing about this. My household has been making the change as well to cleaner ingredients! Now my kids go into a school 5 days a week, so the occasional junkie snack will appear, BUT more so the healthiest options I can find. A tough thing I face is that I can't send nuts and strawberries, and they are the most utilized. I have made my own granola bars/balls already, and recreated the Tru Fru! Buy Lilly's sugar free chocolate melt and dip in frozen berries!

Wow.. this is actually confirmation for me. My daughter is autistic and a week or 2 ago I stopped having sugary things at home. And her diet is mostly sugar free now. I've replaced it with dried fruit snacks and those fruit and nut bars. I also give her coconut sweetened cereal and grape juice sweetened biscuits. And sea salt crisps ( chips) and fresh fruit. She has a very restricted diet due to her sensory issues. No meat eggs fish most veg... ugh its hard but she will have Smoothies

Yes! I used to never buy snack foods but somewhere along the way, I started buying them! I noticed that my younger kids are more picky eaters than my oldest, who never grew up with prepackaged snacks! We are remodeling our kitchen, but I am totally in when we get our kitchen back! Probably a budget saver too!

I started using the simplest trick and my kids (and entire house) eat TONS more fresh fruit and vegetables. The trick is, put it on the counter! 😂 i cut up veggies and fruit put them out like a "party" and leave it. It's usually all eaten by the middle of the day 😂. Doesn't have to be fancy, just put out what you have. I do this with food that isn't getting eaten fast enough too. And yes they are still hungry for meals even though they've been "snacking" on cucumbers and carrots 😂. Worst case scenario, you've prepped for the week 🤷‍♀️🤣

I think informing your kids as to your reasons and letting them read some info helps. My oldest Son who is now 22 always acted like He never cared or listened, buy i was surprised when he showed me what he bought when he went grocery shopping. Everything had clean ingredients and was organic. We try and buy clean snacks when we buy them. Siete brand is a big favorite so is chomps beef sticks, and simple mills crackers (just read ingredients because some have some added junk) we always buy organic, stay away from inflammatory oils and just try to eat as clean as possible.

Yes! I’m on board for this! My family eats far too many processed snack foods. I’ve been waiting for cooler weather so baking more makes sense from an energy usage standpoint. I can’t cut out everything but if I can make just half of our snack foods I’ll count it as a win.

Have loads of fresh veggies & fruits cut up and ready to grab, organic tortilla chips with travel sized salsa, organic fruit leather, dried fruit, homemade trail mix, organic bars/scout bars, boiled eggs, nuts, pop corn, organic baked treats, homemade organic baked bars or homemade organic granola bars. You can still have the fun stuff, but it’s either going to cost you money or a time investment. 100% worth it!

They didn’t really listen or care, but now that they are older and have kids of their own, they seem to care a lot more because they see what a difference it makes on how they feel. 😉

Love healthier options for kids. I made the change years ago. It's definitely a lot more expensive but worth it. Having things ready for kids is the best way to get them to eat healthier. Bagging up baby carrots/celery and having little cups of peanut butter, ranch, or hummus is good options for veggies. Fruit is easy - find what kind of apples they like and have them on hand. Mandarin oranges, bananas, fruit cups with 100% fruit juice is a good option too!! I put veggies in many meals just to get extra in there. But when you find their favorites stock up on those items!! My kids love yogurt too. Just make sure to check labels, some items seem healthy but have a ton of sugar and additives in them!!

My older kids ask for a lot of cut up veggies easy to grab…. Homemade granola with milk or yogurt….. their favorite protein source and yummy carbs like my boy loves rice my girl likes sweet potatoes lol I just try to have things easy and ready so they actually eat! Little girls eat apples non stop lol I get it!! We are not perfect but we strive to keep it like this in the home

Honestly I think that this isn’t the worst possible time for you to introduce this to your kiddos. With growing boys they will be HUNGRY. Eventually they don’t care what’s being offered as long as it’s food 😂. So I think that this over time will actually not be so tragic. I imagine it is hard at first because kids like their snacks, but once it just becomes normal that this is what we have at our house and this is what we get as a treat at a friends house or out and about or something, it becomes a lot more fun to have those “treat” snacks rather than just the norm.

Yes! I am going to have to try to not type a 10 page essay here! Lol! I have been trying to be on this path for years! I have 4 kids and 3 are out of the house now. I would say I have been trying to do this for 15 years or more. Like you, I waited until my kids were a bit older and had the same responses from my kids.. including the dramatic there's nothing to eat! Lol! I was trying to figure out why one son battled eczema so bad, one kids stomach hurt so bad, one suffered from so much anxiety, figured out my daughter was lactose intolerant and allergic to food dyes! I did my best to try to help with all those things. As they got older of course they made some of their own choices despite my efforts and have paid the price. Now they are seeing why I was trying to do what I was. I have 1 more at home and doing my best to help him navigate. He is watching his older siblings and having lightbulb moments. I have to be careful because of a long line of diabetes on both sides of my family. Love to watch the Just Ingredients tips and such. Haven't been able to pull the trigger on her protein powders because my husband is allergic to Stevia of all things! Here's an idea for all your uneaten chips.. give them.out to trick or treaters or send to school for Halloween parties! Lol! Please share your journey with us!

I’m in! I have always instilled a healthy mindset in my kids but my issue is now one of my kids is in high school. She sees her friends eat all fast food, Takis, and the list goes on. All of a sudden she just wants junk and absolutely nothing else. I have no idea what happened. I’ve told her we will go shopping together and pick out healthier alternatives and she will request one single thing and that’s it. Same evening I’m starving and have nothing to eat.

You know I saw in the news that melatonin thing you give your kids and talk about often is bad. I also have no doubt you heard it was a good thing. It will be the same with sugar, processed food, eggs, tuna, coffee and red wine which don’t apply to your family but the pattern is set. Before it was just the news reporting flip flopping studies but your generation also has podcasts to contend with. Being hangry is worse than a fish cracker. Low fat items are bad in sugar. Low sugar are bad cause they have more fat. Every house in America has left over items from multipacks cause some items are favorites and other item vile. Or the date is bad or storing them in the garage makes them stale. Also the crumb factor. There is medication for adhd. Maybe stop buying snacks a month in advance. Put it to the weekly. Only in pantry. Routine is great for adhd and autism. Maybe homeschool all the time or leave them in school all the time? Be careful with commitments for church and activities. No matter what you do there is no cure for adhd so denying the kid this or that really isn’t going to help you other than feel you are fixing it when it’s going to remain. They are going to wonder what bad thing they did (probably adhd related) to not be able to have a snack. Given there are 3 kids be prepared to find food hoarded in the rooms for fear their sister or brother might eat the last one. Especially with impulse control a challenge for one or more. I grew up with one sister and the kitchen had one cabinet for food and that was all. Bread was on counter. Top freezer and bottom fridge. The only shelf stable food in house fit in cabinet. Shopping was on weekend since they both worked and had long commutes. They bought a loaf of bread, juice box if we didn’t do milk money that month and a single snack in a brown paper bag for lunch tin. They came in a pack of 12 and maybe a box of twinkies. My sister and me always had to count and make sure whatever we took from the Twinkie box or package of tiny chips would last for the rest of the week for school lunches. Friday was sad cause stuck with Cheetos or something vile. Now we have fridge freezers twice the size, spare ones, pantries and kids just don’t need to plan ahead anymore. And we are wondering why they are sick of the fish cracker bought 20 days ago. If 1/3 of the bulk chips goes unused is it a savings?
