    Hi, professional trainer here. Saying “no” is fine when immediate action needs to be taken, but it’s important to follow it with redirection. Positive reinforcement is the most effective way to train any animal.

  • @audraburke1526

    Can you give an example of redirecting afterwards? I’ve tried distracting my bunnies with cardboard and treats but they still go to the same areas. I cover those areas with tiles or tape and they flip the tiles or chew through the tape

    @@audraburke1526 It takes time, consistency and repetition for them to learn. Every single time they are chewing where they shouldn't say, "NO!" Then show them something they can chew on (cardboard cat scratcher, dig box, fresh wood, wicker basket). When they chew/dig on these reward them with treats. Repeat, repeat, repeat. They will eventually learn that it's far more fun and rewarding to chew their toys than your walls or carpet. It takes constant vigilance. Their access should be restricted if you're not around to keep an eye out whilst they're still learning. I hope this very quick explanation helps!

    Today I told my bunny “No, Cece” and she turned towards me, did a little thump so I go “that’s what I’m saying!” And she just binkied away. I don’t know what that says about me or her on how effective disciplining her is but it was for sure the Funniest thing I saw all day and I couldn’t be mad at her after that😂😂

    I did train my bun like a dog. I put a treat in front of his face and wait until he turned his head away. Rewarded and did that over and over. Then I linked a command to it and now he knows whenever he does something he shouldn’t I say that word sternly and he usually will turn away and leave it. So I usually don’t have to punish him ☺️

    Can you explain it a bit more? I don't get it. You put a treat in front of him so he eats the treat? Or turns away from the treat (how?) And how did you reward?

  • @noralip1807

    @noralip1807

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@jaseczka i can try to explain it better. What you want to do is reinforce a specific behaviour. So you have to mark it with a word/treat, whatever the animal likes. I just sit on the ground and have a very tasty treat in my open hand. As soon as he goes for it I close my hand to make sure he doesn’t get it. As soon as he does turn even the slightest but away from me I reward him with a treat from my other hand. Keep building it up and eventually put a word to it. So as soon as he does the behaviour you want him to do say ‘no’ or smth. Not sternly, just say it. I’m not sure how to explain it. If you want some better training tools, look up ‘it’s me or the dog’ on youtube. Basically what she does. There’s a couple of older vids with a good video example. And don’t give up. Some rabbits find it more difficult than others. Hope I explained it good enough for ya. Good Luck and remember to have fun! And if u have more questions, contact me on insta @ Yukiandlynn. I trained with "no" and a slap on my thigh. No I just slap my thigh. The doe has this "stick-her-hands-in-her-pocket-and-whistle" kinda attitude, very sneaky, very naughty or should I say just so damn curious. All 3 of my buns are free roam their hutch is there time out, jail house I should call it. None of this has been over night. I'm still trying to get them to get along with my 3rd older abused bun. Was in a shelter for 5 years. Has a history of abuse, not by the shelter but by previous owner. He hates touch so 8 months later he comes for rubs😌. The young 2 yr doe loves to pluck, the 3yr old buck is ok with this. His back is sometimes a little bald. But the 6 yr old buck hates touch. How do I handle this? Any toy one can suggest? More time together? I have filled a cat litter with hay for her to forge, I have a play mat to hide treats in for her to scratch around, plush toys to lick and groom. I just want her to understand that 6yr old buck doesn't like plucks.

    Good points. I find that redirecting my bun works really well. When my bun starts to get out of line I yell "No! bad Peanut" and he responds to the sound of my voice and then I give him one of his chew toys or a handful of hay and it seems to make the connection for him. He rarely has accidents or chews things that he shouldn't. He still has naughty moments, but the more he knows what he can and cannot chew, he's learning for sure.

    I’m not sure if I agree with most of these, obviously with your rabbit it’s working but with others I don’t know if it’s the right direction, you have to build an element of trust before you start training your rabbit. How I trained my rabbit to stop chewing the bars is I actually moved him away from the bars and toward something he can chew, or I have a pillow and I gently push him away whilst saying no, not shouting it, just saying the word no. I only use the pillow when I’m in my bed and I’m exhausted.

    I just got a new rabbit two days ago (a Mini Plush Lop buck, under a year old). I've had a rabbit before, also a buck, when I was MUCH younger, but my mother is the one who really took care of him due to me being so young. I'm trying to relearn the ways of pet rabbits and how to balance our lives (because let's face it, a new bunny can be quite the struggle). I did research beforehand, but little of it prepared me for the little energy ball who is now in my care. Your videos have been SO helpful in teaching me how to guide him to not cause (too much) trouble and helping also teach me, not just him. I know it's way too early to say, "oh yes, this worked!" but it's easy, logical, and honestly, I've heard so many people use your tips and agree that they helped. So thank you for your channel and your tips and guides, it's making my bunny-raising journey a lot smoother!

    I'm going to try all these. I especially needed the advice about them doing their business in the wrong places. I've been keeping her out of my bedroom and I can tell she feels left out because of it. Now maybe I can train her to respect my bed. 😊 🐇 Thank you

    I've had rabbits for 5 years, and decades worth of dogs. Here's what I found. So I have never been one to yell or even raise my voice much. So what I've accidentally learned is that by changing to a firm tone, the Bunny immediately reacts bc it's out of character. "no Sydney" in a firm voice causes him to immediately retreat.. Then I give him something he can chew. I never would pick my buns up to scold as you say. As prey animals, It's hard enough to get most buns to trust you to pick them up, so logically it would just instill that being picked up is negative.

    I have had two rabbits One was very people friendly, ran up to people to greet them, loved to explore all the rooms in the house. She chewed everything, furniture, carpets, clothing while I wear it, beds, cords, etc... Bunny two is shy, stays in one room mostly, does not roam the house, only comes too you if you have food for them, but very nice bunny, never chews my stuff. Two different personalities

    Today I got my first ever bunny. She is a Dutch mark and her name is Buttercup. And guess what she is the exact same color as cinnabon and guess what.... (this will make you feel successful for your efforts to make videos) I didn't get it from a pet store rather from an ethical breeder who took excellent care of the whole litter.

    My rabbit ate half of my wall were it got to the metal but i gave her boxes and lots of toys she stopped. I had to give her little pushes that didn't hurt her. I also give her kisses on her head and nose. Also remember dont give your bunnys abbits baths its bad for them.

    And this is how it worked out for us: Cayenne chews cord. Joseph thumps ground and goes "no". Cayenne thumps ground. Joseph thumps again. Cayenne thumps again. Joseph starts laughing. Cayenne zooms through the bunny tunnel. I have no idea who won the argument...
