    The main point of this video is to emphasize two things: 1.) Social VR platforms have a lack of tools to help adults separate themselves from children. Personally I do think that children under 13 shouldn't be on them, it's literally in the rules of most of them, but it's the internet. There's going to be kids. On VRChat (one of THE MOST popular VR games, period.) there is no way to prevent minors from joining certain instances. There are content filters that prevent users under 18 from viewing certain avatars, but nothing that prevents them from going to certain instances. Again, some of the most popular worlds are bars and strip clubs where people are doing what you'd expect. Groups have no way to prevent people under 18 from joining them. Furthermore VRChat's moderation is just bad. Someone can have "I'm 9" in their bio, and not get banned. Even TikTok, which I consider to have pretty abysmal moderation, will ban a user for that. 2.) VR Headsets are not physically accommodating to the majority of children under 13. VR Headsets tend to be 13+ for a reason. These devices do not physically fit a majority of people under that age. The device not being properly secured to the head causes unnecessary neck and back strain, especially to a child who's body might already have trouble supporting a 1 pound device on their head that's properly fitted. The optics systems of these headsets don't accommodate the average ipd ranges (43-58mm) of a child. This leads to eye strain, blurry vision, nausea, and headaches. There's arguments to be made about other devices causing those side effects on kids and even adults. The difference in those cases is that it usually isn't the device causing them, rather poor posture or not taking enough breaks. That can be corrected. The fit of a headset may or may not be able to be corrected for a child. It really depends on the headstrap. The IPD of headsets most definitely can't be corrected for a child. Most of them bottom out at the very upper bound of the average child's IPD. Very few headsets barely dip a bit farther in, the only two I know of being the Quest Pro (55-75mm) and Bigscreen beyond (55-72mm), which are both 1000$+ devices. My point is not that kids shouldn't be online playing video games. My point is that one of the biggest games (that acts more like a social media than anything else), and a lot of other similar smaller ones do practically nothing to protect children, and that some of these children don't even fit the devices properly causing various types of strain that can't be avoided, and probably isn't very healthy.

    This is super accurate holy hell- I’ve had to lock VRChat on my oculus because my younger brother tends to try to interact with adults that do some very not so kid friendly stuff online, and will start saying the things he hears in there. He’s 8 years old and saying things like “Suck my d***” and “F*** off” to kids at his school, which has gotten him into a lot of trouble 💀 For now he stays in rec room where there’s at least more kid friendly moderation

    That’s so true, about every kid I have played with (some were chill though) were either annoying, incredibly rude, or, about 5%, were actually friendly humans. It’s honestly crazy to hear six year olds scream every swear word in existence and then the n-word because they have the n-word pass, and the worst part about it, THEY LEARNED IT FROM THEIR FRIENDS. The annoying ones either keep team-killing, singing trash music WITH SWEAR WORDS, or they go for the good ol’ “HE’S GOT WALL HACKS SPEED HACKS AIMBOT HE’S CHEATING” kind of stuff. Along with that, they usually have a kill-to-death ratio of 1:70. Believe me, I’ve become good at Zero Caliber and I’ve been called some of the most obnoxious things by little kids. Now, thankfully, there are some nice goblins out there. These ones aren’t too good at the game, but they act very mature for their age. Now, as how to deal with the bad goblins who insult you: I go with saying the comeback no human has ever survived: “Well you’re a poopyhead!” Talking to them nicely and trying to resolve the issue also works I forgot everything I wrote

    i agree. when i got my quest 1 when i was 10, i knew there where adults, i knew there less than desirable things for a kid to hear on it, i knew there where platforms that weren't exactly "made for kids." so any time i would boot up VR chat, i would stick to private rooms, rooms with few people, or rooms where i could make an easy get away until i was certain that the people where fairly young. now im 13 with a quest 2 and still do it and still know that VR chat isnt made for people who are 13, but im mentally mature to the point where i laugh at a few adult jokes, but that still doesn't mean im allowed in places like that. mental maturity isnt everything.

    I completely agree with this, I’m glad I wasn’t a little kid annoying people on multiplayer, I played pretty much ONLY single player games cause they were comforting to me, whenever I did play multiplayer games I was always player 2, and that was when I very rarely DID play multiplayer games, and sure I didn’t play “appropriate” single player games (the walking dead saints and sinners) and that’s carried over to me today.

    i honestly think that vr chat is perfectly ok for teens and adults but definitely not for children. kids ages 14+ shouldnt be barred from vr chat in its entirety because its probably one of the better vr social games (rec room just.. looks bad tbh, and a lot of the playerbase is YOUNG kids) my personal opinion is that similar to youtube, there should be 18+ experiences for adults who want to do adult things (so basically substance use and s*xual subjects) and if a child is found entering those worlds they should get banned once reported (which adults who dont want kids all up in their space will definitely do, and its typically not hard to tell if someones faking being 18) honestly though for now, teens that are on vr should be taught to be responsible (mute adults/people talking abt adult subjects, block adults trying to engage innapropriately with minors, etc.) bc youre never going to 100% prevent kids from using vrc, so the best we can do for now is to teach them to be safe.

    I'm 14 and I see all types of shit in the game. Thanks to my genes whenever people hear me talk they think im an adult so i engage in conversations im not supposed to be engaging in. I kinda agree with this statement but my dad wouldnt limit me to games like vrc but instead he'd teach me the time and place to say certain things. I do say some things I shouldn't be saying in the game and whenever I hear a kid that sounds pretty young i'd try to censor myself or teach them "hey this person is kinda bad" or inform them that they're way too young to be playing the game. I definitely think most teens should be limited but as long as they aren't a pain in the ass or saying every single swear word they could think of in every sentence i think we should let them loose.

  • @Lupain
    @Lupain6 ай бұрын

    I agree with you 100%, but in VRchat and elsewhere, it's not about censoring yourself. I'm 27 and find a lot of people and worlds repulsive, to be honest. There are worlds where that's perfectly fine, some clubs that are mean't to have some spicy stuff, and I don't want to act like a priest but to being an adult doesn't mean I have to see porn everywhere I go, I would want to see this in public as well. In VRchat it's unfortunately the case that most people only walk around with such sexualized models that belong in private worlds and even actually seemingly innocent and pretty worlds have alot lewd stuff in it. I find it rather sad that the whole VRchat turned halfways into this a porn game. But no matter if you like it or not, Kids should not be there, I saw some shit there, kids playing with models that have a massive D*** or talking like trash. It's certainly not exactly healthy for their psyche. VRchat should be for +18 only... at least not for 13y old kids!

  • @uwuawoo3987

    Can I also mention, nearly 99% of the times its underage children running around in NSFW avatars and forcing everyone around them to witness that? It's the most gross thing ever. No absolutely no kid should be on vrchat. It should be 18+ with the kind of content that people easily have access too. Literally the only reason kids are on here is cause tupper cares about Money, not child saftey. Or even adults saftey for that matter. They literally have rec room, they can stay there.

    I got my quest 2 when I was 9 (turning 10 at that time now I'm 13) and wowie were there things I should've never seen. I first downloaded some harmless games like Echo Arena, some goblin pet game and you guessed it, VRChat. Now since "The Boys"(Brush Guys) were my favorite youtubers, I was a brush kiddie but only for a short time. After that I had an anime phase but then I found the unholy grail of E-Boy/GIrl avatars. Man oh man was I disgusted but they grew on me. One day I visited the black cat and was I disgusted by the things that happened there. In conclusion, you are so right, children shouldn't be on apps like VRC. (Note that I was more "maturer" than the kids around my age and also a Tech-Smartass.)

    For me i was watching r rated films when i was 9 without my parents knowing. When I got to vrchat i wasn't fully disgusted at the things i saw because i've seen worse but I definitely found it a bit cringe. I remember asking myself "why do these people just stare at a mirror or lay down with eachother for hours in a virtual game?" Or "does this person really have to have an extremely revealing avatar?" I have no problem with these people talking and shit but some of these people don't even talk to eachother and just jerk off with their headset on. But ofc there's the good side of vrchat with mature and funny people and even the kids who've matured. I def think kids shouldn't be in vrc in the first place but i would actually try and censor myself around these kids. (Tbh that's just me i dont rlly give a shit what other people do unless they're whipping out an nsfw avatar).

Once in a while, I get bored so I go on Rec Room and honestly I can see that the game is slowly becoming inappropriate.. Its not the games on it though, its the players. Yes most of them are children but a slight majority of them are adults, or teens of the age 13-17. I hear them talk about NSFW in games that are clearly targeted to a young audience. I don't know if this is just happening to me or if its for everyone else.

    Thanks for pointing out the IPD issue. It's the most concerning issue that Meta as the market leader has unfortunately not cared enough about. I'm also hopeful that Roblox going VR will steer the kids that way and away from VR Chat. Remembering what it's like being a kid, the main reason kids are drawn to things intended for older audiences is because it is often glaringly obvious the content intended for them is low effort garbage by comparison. If someone were to choose between Roblox and VR Chat on a pure "fun" level, I'd say Roblox wins hands down, and that's a win-win to me.

    The problem as old as the internet, Nay as old as time. Summervacation was a time where children were able to work the fields in olden times, and these kids would go to school in the last week of harvesting time because they would get into bars and drink the last bits of beer in the glasses in bars from the harvesting festival. Teachers would take them to school a week early (during the harvesting festival) to keep them out of trouble. Keeping children out of adult spaces is a problem. Forbidding children from these spaces is one solution. But as you said, they will find a way in. Refraining from having these spaces is another. Remember, VR is in the end, an entertainment medium. Just like TV and Videogames. It CAN be used for education purposes. But first and foremost, it is a toy. So children (13 and up) will play with it. Having an application that is just for adults is possible. But that's just it, you would have to wall it off from children, like most applications meant for adults now (gambling games, realistic shooters, horror, etc.) but still, children will find a way to it, or ask their parents to get it for them and they sometimes (if they are bad parents) will. So... The solution? Ban the physical addresses of the headsets IMHO. If you can't protect a child from the internet in VR, that VR headset shouldn't be allowed on the internet. Irresponsibility breeds stupidity. If the users are not responsible, remove their sets from the net for 6 months. See how quickly they learn. They still don't learn? make it 12! Again? 24! Pretty soon, the kid will be an adult anyway.
