Get Paid To Charge Your Electric Car - Go VS Agile

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Everyone keeps asking what is the cheapest octopus Energy deal out there? Octopus GO Or Octopus Agile? Well today we will be finding out which energy deal is the cheapest for an electric car driver. Looking at my charging data sign up to share.octopus.energy/straw-mo... get a £50 credit signup bonus. We also look at plunge pricing what it means and how agile allows you to track electric wholesale rates. I Also think this is cheaper than the EDF deal.
As mentioned in the video I have an Ohme cable and without this being an Agile customer would of been made A LOT HARDER;
Ohme Cable can be purchased via octopus from octopus.energy/ohme/ or direct from Ohme but being an Octopus customer gets it cheaper! www.ohme-ev.com/
Ohme can be purchased as a wall box unit as part of a fixed install and qualifies for the OLEV grant it for around £600*
*typical installation costs prices vary depending on install
🐙🔌share.octopus.energy/straw-mo... £50 credit on your gas and electric octopus go 5p per kwh offpeak!

Interesting move by French government - they have increased the subsidy on new electric cars to 7000 € and increased the scrapage bonus , so that the maximum deduction if you are trading in a diesel over 9 years old is 14,000 € . You can get a Zoe for 179€ a month on a 3 year lease.

@@NicolasRaimo There seems to be a move here by the French government to use this crisis to electrify the nation (rather than enrich Tory donors) . French policy has always been to remain prominent worldwide in important industries like aviation, nuclear, oil etc.. Of course priorities have to change. Where I live in Brittany nearly every small village has two EV charging points installed by the state. Where we lag is having innovative suppliers like Octopus. I am on an electric car owner tariff (with Engie) which costs me 0.10€ a kWh (total including standing charge, tax etc..)between 2330 & 0730. The smart meters here are not very smart. However in the last 3 months all my charge has come from the solar panels via my Zappi. Here is a link to the ZOE deal - you will notice that it says 8,000 € deposit - that is mostly covered by the 7,000 € bonus. www.renault.fr/vehicules-electriques/zoe.html?ORIGIN=F6pub-internet&CAMPAIGN=fr-r-t-eleccar-zoe-zoe_filrouge_t-02-2020-ao-oom-disp&dclid=COCcp4yd2-kCFUqoUQodhrEALw

Thanks Nick, you cleared a few of my Octopus questions including one or two extra ones I didn't know I had. Early next month my 9.6kWp solar array & powerwall 2 will finally be installed after lengthy covid delay. I have been considering octopus energy to export some excess power. I had no idea that it was possible with the right configurations and timing to be paid to use electricity so it's feasible I can charge my battery for free if the weather is not favorable to the solar (should the timing be right). I have like this video to make it easy to find at the point where the install is complete & I have all the paperwork required to set up an account where I can export power. I will also consider an electric vehicle particularly if the rumours about the government introducing a trade-in scheme for old cars towards an electric vehicle are true.

Great video bud, the Ohme cable looks like a great option if u have a non tethered wall box. U mentioned 'if u don't have a Tesla' then the Ohme is a good option. TBH they don't even compare. U can only set a 'start charge' or 'be charged at time' in a Tesla, nowhere near as clever as the Ohme especially as u can import all the data from Octopus to automate the charge during the cheapest times. Tesla may update this in the future but u certainly cannot do that today!

Hey Robert couple of solutions to help, you could get an Ohme type 2 to type 2 cable and slice the end off the plug and wire it into your existing charger either your self as it’s like wiring a plug or using an electrician if your not confident in your abilities to wire electrics. Most plunges normally happen middle of the night it’s only due to lockdown we’ve seen day plunges so might be worth waiting it out, you could also try increase electric use using oven and washing machine to suck out more grid use. If you look at your GO bill your have an average per kWh and if you look on agile bill same again I bet it’s lower on agile

If you had solar & a Powerwall, you’d normally use the solar to run your home and charge the Powerwall during the day, than in the evening/night use the Powerwall to run your home (to maximise savings). But is there an easy way for the Powerwall to charge from the grid when the price is negative (is it mainly only negative at night...?) and then any extra solar can be sold back to the grid....so you’re earning both ways rather than trying to maximise the saving or wouldn’t you get paid for the extra since they’re trying to get rid and not buy back.....? Just in the process of designing my own bungalow and I’m considering solar & Powerwall but unsure if the cost vs saving stack up, I think once VTG becomes more standard it will but at the moment I’m unsure......any advice on this also.....?

  • @NicolasRaimo

There’s some software to handle the powerwall but new solar installs only qualify for what the energy company agrees to pay octopus will current pay 5p per kWh to purchase solar back they also do an Agile buy back where prices vary. Check out the interview I did with octopus CEO where we touched on this. I honestly think outlay cost on PW and Solar pointless currently with agile unless your trying to be more green or have a VERY VERY high use case for me it would take over 40 years for payback for PW and Solar due to super cheap agile prices it might take longer now

Nicolas Raimo - That was my thinking with solar and PW, if VTG comes common place it’s an EV and PW in one and that changes the calculation plus the solar charges the EV, but my calculations were showing the solar & PW wouldn’t or at best only just pay for themselves before they would need replacing (+30yrs). Thanks for your insight

I'm happy to be proved wrong with maths though :)

Great video Nick. I’m a Coop Energy customer powered by Octopus, so I consider myself an Octopus 🐙 customer. I’ve recently gone on to their flexible rate after being on a 12 months fixed. I’m having Smets2 smart meters installed on Sept 6th after some main fuse upgrade work is finished on Aug 27th. I currently don’t have an EV and am only 1 year into a Motability scheme lease but plan to go EV for our next car. Once our smart meters are in will it be cheaper for us to switch to either Go or Agile? What is the standing charge on Go & Agile? We currently are on Tariff Name Co-op Flexible April 2021 v1, Unit rate 16.63p/kWh, Standing charge 21.55p/day (£78.66\year) Cheers, Dave

Love the video and great information. I’ve just switched to octopus and have selected the go tariff but as I’m planning on a solar array and Tesla battery, I’ll be sending electricity back to the grid. I found the details of how much electricity costs to buy from octopus agile (app Octopus Watch) but I can’t find out how much they buy it from me for (I know it varies but I can’t even find a guide). I’m struggling and looking for help. 🤞🤞

We also used to just have off peak and on deals but octopus shuck the market up here and it changed. I ran data using non lockdown figures how I got under 8p lockdown has made these drop under 5p, as mentioned in video my advise is if you can charge your car at a different time SWITCH, worse case is just switch back. Remember Agile created GO to give customers a more at ease approach with set hours Agile is cheaper if you can switch your charging habits but because of times of low prices are better hours wife’s more happy as washing machine can normally go on early hours and finish perfectly rather than being sat wet from 4:30am

Courtesy of your referral I’m with Octopus on their brilliant Go tariff. For me Go is better because I’ve a Powerwall and solar panels, this mean in the summer I don’t use any power from the grid. In the winter I charge my Powerwall for 5pence per kWh including vat, standing charge is a further 20p per day. I really don’t think I could better that. However if one doesn’t have battery storage the the agile tariff is brilliant providing one uses electricity at the off peak periods. I would highly recommend Octopus energy they are a brilliant company once they’ve got everything up and running, if one opps for their gas tariff as we, I did, then you’ll need the latest smart meter as the previous won’t work with gas. Colin.

There's also an app to control the powerwall based on octopus energy prices

Nicolas Raimo I might do that come winter time. You say there’s an app to control the powerwall? I have the Tesla app but mostly it does it all by itself. Just two options. One is it only charges from solar, the other it will charge from off peak if it thinks it’s necessary based on the weather report and the off peak time that I’ve set.

Hi Colin. I have solar PV and a Powerwall2 and i have found Agile to be better than GO for overall cost... I wonder why we are different in our thinking on this one? I dont get the fit but I do get a set 5.5p/Kwh for solar export . Today was my best day so far with 46kwh generated and 31kwh going to the grid. This month we have been around 97% self powered.. the other 3% was when it was the mega price plunge day and i switched off the solar pv and the Powerwall..
