Mine will reset randomly during a tank where it has already unlocked it. Pretty inconsistent for me. I can’t quite figure out the variables that makes it change. I have a 2022 Kona N and I was noticing sometimes my car “felt” fast and other times, although quick, felt it was lacking. Started digging into info and found out about the octane learning… something no one really mentions. Did the octane learning and bam, car felt like I remembered… so the thing about the “learning” is, based on your daily commute, the ecu may or may not ever learn during your drives… all my travel is city, so I never meet the “requirements” for the learn… I went a full tank of gas without it ever learning and only gave 14-15psi the whole tank. Did the learn, bam 19-20psi… crazy the system has such stringent guides to get peak boost and it can’t learn throughout a tank of gas.. either way, still love the car; just something I need to be mindful of when I wanna race and stuff.

  • @ruller213

Any time the car detects you've added gas to the tank, it resets the octane learning because using low octane fuel (lower than 91/93) can cause knock and pinging in the motor which will destroy it over time, my work-around that makes me hardly ever think about octane learning is don't nickel and dime the gas tank, it holds like 10 gallons from empty so just go for a full refuel and take a small drive down the local highway to let it see if you put the right fuel in (octane learning), and set the cruise at between like 68 and 80 or something, gotta stay in 6th gear or higher in the dct model for the entire time, and let it go for I think about ten minutes and it should be octane learned.. only main complaint I've still got is it won't tell you when it is, or isn't octane learned so you've just gotta mash the pedal to find out

What an annoying pain in the butt this is. Surely there are systems that can detect what type of fuel is in the tank without having to drive in the manner prescribed. My Renault Clio Mk IV RS200 needs 95 RON (I love in Australia), but I thought I'd test to see if it would run on E10 94 RON, as some 95 RON specified cars can do so. Within 15 minutes of normal driving with the 94 RON a warning light appeared asking me to get the car serviced. I just then fully filled the car with correct 95 RON, and the light eventually went out, but it proves sensors can be more finely tuned than those that appear to be in the N. What makes this even more annoying is that you have to do this every time you re-fill the tank when, again, the default should just be that you've filled with the same fuel unless you run the car through the learning process again.

So basically all you have to do is after you fill up get on the interstate set Cruz at 75 mph for 10 minutes and it will learn. Kind of retarded that we have to do stuff like this every fill up to get the max performance out of the car. Especially when I'm running 93 all the time. You would think that if you're running a lower octane fuel when you first go wide open throttle the car will retard the timing and know you're running lower octane due to knock. Should automatically pick up once you go wide open throttle to know what fuel is in the car. Would hate to fill up the car and come across someone on the road that you wanted to race in Mexico and your car lacks performance due to not have "octane learned"

Right when I got the car and I broke it in and hit that 600 mi mark I went wide open throttle and it felt pretty good and I was hitting 18 lbs.. And I remember one day on my way to work It's like the car hit a brick wall when I was going in a boost. @@ENtense No worries. I'm just data-driven. The issue and reason why anecdotal evidence is taken with a huge grain of salt is simply that the body/mind is extremely susceptible to error. For example, there was a peer-reviewed study a while back that included lots of fighter pilots with thousands if tens of thousands of flight time. Some of the most highly trained, experienced people extremely in-tune with their senses were tested on whether they could "feel" their speed, direction or attitude after some blindfolded maneuvers. Every single one was completely and utterly wrong in every case. The brain is a fickle thing. But yeah, definitely look at the data I posted, and also the comments by SXTH and Tork who have tuned these ECU's. The ECU does have a learning period, but in general it doesn't include boost and it is also extremely quick (within a minute in some cases). No need to waste gas on the highway haha, just drive normal for a few.

So what’s going on when people only see >15 PSI after following this procedure? And what’s the user manual talking about? Accuracy aside clearly something is changing and I wonder what that is.

Freeway about 77mph with cruze tried to stay out of eco but switched sometimes every 30 miles or so between N eco or normal. Mostly driving in normal trying to learn.

I think this is total BS that you have to do this to get maximum power. I'm not bashing you but Hyundai!

The thing is, it’s not just a Hyundai thing. People are just learning about it so everyone is losing their minds lol. From my research, it’s common for high compression turbo vehicles.
