Gestures and Body Language

If not used properly, gestures and body language can be distracting and detract from the message of your speech. Learn to hone your speaking skills by channeling nervous energy into purposeful movement.

One issue I always used to have at networking events was nervously playing with my drink, or taking sips inappropriately so I didn't have to talk. If that's an issue for you guys, make sure you hydrate yourself well at home first. Breath through your nose when not speaking, to help keep your mouth moist when nervous.

I am amazed how someone can so thoroughly understand the issue, and yet at the same time be so unhelpful about resolving it. My problem is I don't know what gestures to do. I'm not talking about any particular subject, I'm just trying to make an introductory video for my other videos, and I need to not just be sitting there the whole time. Also, I pace when I talk when I'm standing (sometimes I even get from sitting so I can walk around), I don't know why, but I can't just stand there the whole time.

Thank You for this video. It helped me to identify problems and caused me to correct them. I tend to shake like I am waiting on line for the ladies room. Everyone has their own response to nervousness up on the podium; Thanks for mentioning the common ones. I also tended to hug the lectern like I was holding on for dear life expecting someone to save me. Again Thanks for the valuable advice and the in- depth insight on the topic of Using Body Language! This video is very Helpful.

Good tips @LiveBergenCountyNJ! It is definitely important to smile when happiness is the message your content expresses. :) And, yes, distracting gestures should be minimized.

These tips are proving to be vital and important to myself and to the members of our Toastmasters club. I have taken the role of serving as Toastmaster for our club I would love to maximize the effectiveness of my body language. By taking on this responsibility I want to convey to our members and guests that I can speak in front of a group of individuals confidently. Thank you for sharing this video. And I am looking forward to developing my public speaking skills.

Descriptive like cradling your hands when describing a baby bird, they can help describe the size shape and location of objects Emphatic these underscore what you're saying, they show strong emotions Suggestive coveys ideas and emotions, like surging your shoulders to suggest irony in what you're saying Prompting a way to ask your audience to participate or respond, asking them to raise their hands for example by raising your hand to show them

The most important gesture is smiling. Constant similar gestures are more distracting than helpful to the message. When not making a specific gesture, please keep hands down by the side. That way when a gesture or body movement is done, it stands out and emphasizes or illustrates the point. Although many of the gestures here add to the point the speaker is trying to make. He makes too many unimportant gestures that felt more like the metronomed pace at which he was speaking.

The important part of learning body language is changing your subconscious mind. Never ever memorize any body movement, that will make you unnatural. Remember always body language is not the only part of communication.

Alternatively, just speak like Vitalik Buterin in 2014 (kzread.info/dash/bejne/hnh705aalcjcl7w.html&t=). Avoid eye contact, have a monotonous voice, and no gestures. It's a good example of what you can get away with when you're a famous genius.

Triangles and arches ... essential in the basis of good architecture AND body language! Build triangles and arches into your body and you will breathe better, look more credible and communicate more clearly :-)

As he mentions the importance of using culturally appropriate hand gestures, he uses two fingers to point at the audience. The irony is that in certain cultures, this is the equivalent of giving them the middle finger. God, I love irony.

How ironic that many of his hand gestures were meaningless or inappropriate to what he was saying. As usual, all very, very basic info - nothing beyond common sense.

Perhaps these are good tips, but this speaker's body language "feels" contrived and rehearsed, NOT NATURAL. This makes him DIFFICULT to watch for me, and I want to look away. For a good example of NATURAL use of body language and hand motions that do not appear contrived, see Martin Rossman and other gifted speakers. This guy is trying way too hard and may have practiced, but has VERY far to go.
