@@proantagonist5042 well ww1 was the first war to have planes, tanks, flamethrowers, gas, I’m sure by 1918 a lot of soldiers would know what tanks are for sure but I guess there’s really nothing like seeing it for the first time. In the movie Katscinzky knows to use grenades maybe showing that some of the veterans knew how to deal with tanks.

We never get to see the perspective of the soldiers inside the tanks. A good narrative choice: it makes these tanks seem like brutal, unstoppable monsters. But for these men inside the tanks it was hell too: most inside couldn't see a thing, it was searing hot inside and you can't hear a thing over the engine. These early tanks were also only lightly armored, slow-moving and prone to break down. Worse for them, the Germans introduced anti-tank weapons and tactics: K-round armor-piercing bullets, heavy anti-tank rifles, mortars and light field guns to blast point blank at the tanks, heavy machine guns, infantry teams trained to attack tanks with hand grenades, wider trenches and other anti-tank obstacles. You had a good chance to be ripped to pieces or burn alive in such a tank.

The initial reaction was indeed confusion and at times panic. But Germans figured out pretty soon that those "things" were extremely unreliable and not that hard to kill with right tools (indirect and direct fire artillery, anti-tank rifles, even machine guns proved a danger to these early tanks)

@@worldcomicsreview354The casualties were so high because of the German spring offensive and later allied advances. The evolution of German infantry tactics and overall strategy allowed break throughs to be made and a temporary return to war of movement (contrary to the popular belief it was the war of movement during which most casualties happened not trench warfare). Tanks played no part in this as Germans for all intends and purposes had none (like a handful of their own terrible designs and some captured tanks). The movie often sacrifises realism and historical accuracy for dramatic purposes.

The first WW1 tanks were basically small rolling forts due to the limits of the technology. The first tank of WW1 that set the basic concept for tanks (1 turret with the main gun and a 360 degree rotation) was the Ft-17 which was way smaller. This here is a tank intended for breakthroughs

The tanks were shooting at the people retreating so the best idea was just to stay in the trench, wait for the tank to pass by, and go BEHIND it instead of being in front of it

  • @--pussypatroll--

    @--pussypatroll--

@@Pigeon66676 I get that. But there's no way a soldier would be UNDERNEATH it in the trench. They would have moved to the side so the tank is not directly over them. Think about it... what would you do? Basic human instinct would have you move away from the tank, even in the trench.
