Georgia: Protestors and riot police face off as ‘foreign agents’ bill approved

Riot police are confronting crowds of protestors outside the Georgian parliament in Tbilisi tonight after MPs gave their approval to the country's divisive Foreign Influence law.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Scuffles broke out inside the parliament too, as deputies traded blows over the legislation, which opponents say will stifle dissent and jeopardise Georgia's hopes of joining the European Union.

@@zx3215Russian "soft power" almost never operates as legitimate NGOs funded by Russia. Every organization I remember to be publicly exposed was like some obscure private organization or "consultation center". It will, however, give the government an excuse to put a red tape on organizations they don't like, most importantly independent organizations that supervise election processes

@@Rom2Serge No they don't as made clear by US officials who worked on reforming the FARA law! FARA regulates lobbying, Georgia has no legal framework for lobbying. The consequences of this law will be drastically different, as we saw in Russia. The law using similar wording as US law is just a cover for especially dumb people who don't know how laws work...

Today is May 17. In 2014, our patriarch announced it as the day of sanctity of the family in Georgia. Today, a million people took to the streets to defend our faith and the sanctity of our family. There was a peaceful march and prayer for the motherland. No foreign journalist has ever covered such a large march. Because they don't want you to see that 80 percent of Georgia protects and will protect the sanctity and faith of the family.

They invoke polls that show upwards of 80% support for Georgia joining the EU and see this law as a slap in the face of the same institution they aspire to be a part of. And no, governments don't have infinite leeway in a democracy. Parliaments, executives, judiciary are supposed to limit each other, and civil society can and should keep watch on all. In a democracy, power is borrowed from the people, but the people can and should make sure that THEIR government enacts THEIR program. The idea that people should vote, and then sit quietly and orderly for the next 4 years is NOT democratic in any way. There is no democracy without a strong and engaged civil society, and a government that listens to them.

To anyone comparing this with FARA law! According to this law anyone can write down anonymous letter about suspicion that someone may be foreign agent and just submit it without any access procedure and government has rights to access any type of personal information about the suspected person or organisation :) please think what does that mean In the end the fact is WE DON'T WANT RUSSIA!!! Edit: I will clarify, anyone means not only organisations but regular people who consume any type of western media, will it be books, movies, videos or news :) stating any opposing opinion could also be considered being foreign agent because of influence. At any point it doesn't matter whether you are actually an organisation or just a citizen, whether you get support from any western country (and mind you Georgia heavily relies on western support, b/c government doesn't want to spend extra money for even cultural restorations :) so yea ), under just suspicion any citizen can be identified as single funded nonprofit organisation that didn't register itself :) there goes opposition what are we taking about then? ** In addition we ALREADY HAVE A LAW THAT REGULATES SUCH ORGANISATIONS THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANOTHER VAGUE LAW THAT INVOLVES LABELING CITIZENS AS POTENTIAL AGENTS About anonymous letters, the process of labelling someone agent is entirely different from US. To my understanding in US government must first prove you are an agent and only after that it's possible to label someone as agent. According to "Russian law" the moment there is a suspicion you are an agent, you get labelled one and government doesn't not have any responsibility of defending you, you have to fend for yourself (majority can't afford living let alone hiring a lawyer) to add to that, if you are under suspicion legally you can't go on with your regular life for at least 6 months. It's silencing out voices and nothing else, the law isn't even legalized yet and people are being brutally beaten and silenced already. Many in hospitals with serious injuries, police are capturing people and then ganging up to beat them when it's not necessary!! They already removed the person from the protesting scene why beat them?! Why send gangs to our houses and beat us for opposing opinion?! yet our government lies in our faces that police do what they have to and beating people up in pulp doesn't go against anything, if you are interested about the scale school aged kids are being arrested just for standing and protesting, no one's safe. Therefore, it's either the EU or Russia, and we prefer the EU in hopes of at least being able to ask for basic human rights! For being able to protect ourselves!

Are these Georgians not aware that other countries can use funds to control their country if this bill is not introduced? What is wrong in disclosing your source of funding ? Does it mean that I can receive £10 million from another or a mexican drug cartell and deposit it at a Georgian bank without disclosing it ? This is madness.

@@tonytony3255 Too bad you are so uneducated. In a formal sense, Georgia is at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Western Georgia is in Europe. In general, there is only one continent, that is Eurasia. Europe is not surrounded by an ocean to call it a separate continent. Now, what about belonging to Europe, Georgia has been a part of Western civilization since ancient times, with its culture, religion, history, and values. Caucasus is the homeland of the first Europeans. The European race is also called the Caucasian race. First of all, precisely because of the Georgians. Before the appearance of Indo-Europeans, Proto-Georgians lived in Europe. As for the Turks. They are the successors of the Byzantine Empire, the greatest center of Western civilization. It is true that the invading Seljuk Turks converted them to Islam and changed their language, but these people did not disappear anywhere. Turkey is a multinational country. "Turk" is their common name. Most have Caucasian-Balkan genes. Only 10-15 percent are of Asian origin.

Also,if you didnt know, white people camd to Europe from Asia!!Slavic people as the biggest ones are Euroasian.White people are not indeginuous to Europe, they came from Asian plains of todays south east Russia mostly (Slavic and Scandinavian) and Europe had a population of nations before Slavic and Scandinavians came to populate Europe. Illyrians lets say are the oldest Europeans. Not sure what ur point is but you will rarely find anyone who thinks Georgia is European. Its just not factual.Even the people in Georgia are more look-alike the Iranians then Slavs and Scandinavians. Its a fact, not sure why its such an insult to Georgians not to be Europeans.Whats the big deal??Its geography.

@@tonytony3255 First of all, I must tell you that most people from Asia have features characteristic of the Mongoloid race. A good example of this is today's Russians, who are a mixture of Tatar-Mongol and Finno-Ugric peoples. Mixed Asians also have narrow eyes, blonde hair, and fair skin. Which has nothing to do with Europe at all. As for Iranians, they are not like Georgians, Georgians are different. some French, Spaniards, Italians, Greeks, Croats, Bosnians, Albanians, Bulgarians, Romanians and other so-called representatives of a European country may also resemble Iranians. This is a stupid argument. To the south of Georgia is Armenia, and to the south of Armenia is Iran. And to the north of Georgia is Russia, so we are Russians?🤡We Georgians are proud of who we are. We know our history. We know who we are, where we come from, where we are and where we are going. Geography, history, anthropology are not your strengths.🤡
