@@andyelliott8027 Indeed! But Foreman got up by the 7 count and he was clearly able to fight another round and there were only 3 seconds left in the 8th round. Referee, Zach Clayton never evaluated George's condition, the officiating during this fight was disgraceful! Ali in the Foreman fight, held behind Foreman's neck over 100 times and he was pushing Georges head down and rabbit punched Foreman multiple times.

@@richardmilliken8705 If you time it you'll see Foreman was counted out, before he was up and it was exactly 10 seconds from the time he hit the floor to the time the ref stopped the fight. That's a KO. There could have been 1 second left in the round, he hit the floor with 11 seconds left, that's irrelevant though, he was counted out. The fight ended as the ref spread his arms.After 10 seconds he was not up.

@@andyelliott8027 It's very clear that George was on the canvas with 10 seconds left in the 8th round and Ali was declared the winner by KO 2:58 of Round 8. Foreman was dropped at the end of round 8 and was on his feet at the 8 second mark on the 10 count. This is an undefeated champion who was winning every round and was able to make it to his feet by the 8 second mark. The Ref- Zach Clayton never even talked to Foreman. George was never evaluated and Clayton just waved the fight over and declared Ali the winner. Had the fight continued, Foreman would've been given a minute to recover before he came out for the 9th round. It doesn't matter what you or i count to, it is very clear that George is on his feet by the time we hear 8 from the ring announcer.

@@richardmilliken8705 The fight was stopped exactly 10 seconds after he hit the floor. It was also stopped before he was on his feet. If you stop the video when he hits the floor you'll see there are 11 seconds remaining in the round. The count you hear in the commentary is NOT the ref counting but the commentator, it bears no relationship to the OFFICIAL count from the ref, who you cannot hear,there was no microphone on the ref. The ref's count(which is the only count) starts at 11 secs to go and finishes when he waves his arms to end the fight with 1 second to go. Do you realise nobody can hear the count apart from the ref and Foreman and certainly not the TV audience. The fight ended when the ref waved his arms BEFORE George was on his feet. Watch the ref and the clock and don't listen to the commentatator, he is not the referee.

It's crazy how big George was seen as just a big brute that could hit hard. In reality he's such an articulate man.

He's a different man now, but back then he was a brute and a bully - and very dangerous. I recall in one of his fights (I think against Ken Norton) where he had knocked him down, and Norton was on one knee on the floor, and Foreman tried to hit him while he was still down - and would have connected but for the referree stepping in and blocking his punch. Had he connected he would've decapitated Norton. At the start of this video he's still looking for excuses as to why he lost to Ali. That fight wasn't 'fixed'. It's quite simple - he was beaten by a man who was faster and smarter than he was, and who was 5 times tougher than Foreman thought he was. George tried to bully Muhammad Ali as he had done all his previous opponents - but that night, it didn't work.

I think the fact that as Jimmy Young once pointed out, ''George didn't absorb punishment, he gave it out''in his youthful career is one reason he's lucid today. and a 14 yr. rest from Boxing didn't hurt. he wasn't even out of his 30's when he started his 2nd career. but if he has unfortunate symptoms at some point it's from that 2nd one. he took some shots that would've KO'd a brick shit house .his defense was not always present. he could ,tho, rely on power always .offense usually ruled the day in his whole career. I don't know what sense it makes to talk about the water now .while still admitting he got his title taken away legitimately w/ punches.also, invariably in boxing a fighter will object to a fight ( for his title, yet) being stopped even if he knows he's finished .Foreman made no apparent pretense (which is what it usually is, anyway).about it at all. it was like he wanted to go take a nap. but the Pryor/Argueo fight sure looks fishy as far as the 'water'goes.so, who knows? he's implying ,tho, that 'medicine ' fowled him up.

It is unreal. I was up and down as a fan. I loved him in the 1968 Olympics. Sure, he won the Gold Medal. It was how he went about it afterwards that grabbed everyone's attention, prancing around the ring with the American flag, bowing to all 4 sides of the ring. John Carlos and Tommy Smith had extended their black glove covered hands in a "black power" stand when they won. Nobody knew what George would do if he won, then he did his patriotic bows. I loved that version of George. Then, with his total destruction of Frazier, after the first knockdown, he spread his arms, and looked like he snarled at Joe while Joe was on the canvas. That's when I started seeing who he had been in the streets, a "violent, uncooperative human being", to paraphrase Larry Merchant. Years later, when in his last fight in his first go-round, he threw a punch at Jimmy Young, and as he was bringing that fist back, he tried to backhand Young. If you've never seen that, go back and watch the Young fight again. He did it at least once. At that point, I was glad George lost that fight. Many years later, when he fought Mike Jameson, he threw an uppercut, a trademark punch of George Foreman. This time, though, as he brought that fist down from the uppercut, he tried to use his elbow as a downward hammer on Jamesons nose!! Thankfully, he missed! I had been a huge fan again, and when I saw that, I thought oh no, here we go. But I never saw George do anything nasty again after that. I almost cried when he KOd Moorer. I had some friends over watching the fight, and after the 7th and 8th rounds, we kinda lost interest in the fight, as Moorer was clearly winning, and the beer and BS started flowing faster. All of a sudden the announcers got really loud, and everybody in the room stood up just as Moorer's feet flew up higher than the rest of his body, and his head bounced off the canvaa!! Everyone in the room was just blown away, as Jim Lampley said "the 68th man in 26 years to have fallen before the professional fury of George Foreman"!! At my house, the beers started flowing pretty fast after that!!! That was a great night in sports history, for sure. Can't believe it was 26 years ago.......

George, so much respect for your attitude and inspiration to others about getting back up from defeats. You are a great person.

Only in the last few years have I seen many of Foremans fights from the late 80s to mid 90s, an incredible journey to become World Champion. Boxing and defeating hard and gritty maulers in slug fests, to outwitting slick young lightning bolt world champ prospects with the world at their feet. What an ageing Big George did in the mid-90s deserves enormous praise, a true legend in our lifetime.

He's a very interesting guy. I remember watching him as a kid and he was muscular, mean and quiet. He disappeared for over 10 years and came back, out of shape, happy and very talkative. I think he would be a remarkable speaker. Hopefully there is a 30 for 30 story on him.

George Foreman true humble warrior and toughest Heavyweight boxing legend to ever live! Much honor and respect to big George Foreman. He's one of the few heavyweights I truly am inspired by along with Joe Lewis and Earnie Shavers!

I always remember Big George in Mexico standing center ring waving the flag. I wanted everyone to know where I'm from . God bless you Champ you'll always be a winner !

Even Mr. Miyagi said "OK lose to opponent but must not lose to Fear"! That's what George did too and He's a Great Man because of it!

This is interesting. I've always wondered about this fight. Before I even heard this, I was wondering whether he was drugged, because he looked so sluggish in the later rounds. To me, it did look like a fast count. I need to look at it more closely, but I thought he was up at the count of ten. If so, the round was over, and the ref could have waited at least until the next round before the fight was stopped. There was also a suspicious comment by Herbert Muhammad about giving the ref money to stop the fight if Ali was in trouble. (see Thomas Hauser's book.) Even with all of this - I think Ali would have won anyway. His style was too much for George, and George was used to fights being over before the third round. I was in sixth grade when this fight occurred, and I think I was the only one in my class who picked Ali, and I won 50 cents in a bet. George has a great way of looking at this. By losing the fight, he found himself. He is a great man. Let me know if any of my thoughts make sense. Polite rebuttals are welcome. Please refrain from personal attacks.

I just looked at the knockdown and count - it was awfully close. George went down with somewhere between eleven and ten seconds left in the round. It depends where you actually consider him down, as to where the count should begin. The referee started the count with between nine and eight seconds left. The announcer stated that the the referee was at count three with six seconds left in the round - which would imply that George had one extra second after the round ended to get up. (I assume there was no saving by the bell in this fight.) George was up on one knee with two seconds, but was not completely up by the time the round ended. The referee waved to end the fight just as the round ended, but appeared to be at a count of eight or nine. Anyway - awfully close. I can see an argument either way about whether it was a legitimate knockout.

@@josephschaeffer3403 yeah, all that could be true, however the referee usually determines if the boxer is still in the physical state to resume the fight even if he beats the count. I don’t however remember any fight where any boxer who was sluggish to his feet was allowed to continue the fight even if he just beat the count. Glad George saw the defeat for what it was and he found his true self and strength. For it is in defeat that we truly know what stuff we’re made of.

I'm not saying he's right or wrong but I have always had the impression that Foreman was already wabbling at the start of the fight long before Ali started hitting him . Actually even Ali looked quite surprised when George went down, like he was wondering "this easy really?"

It’s was definitely fixed Big George Foreman has thrown plenty of big punches and never got tired before plus those loose ropes which allowed Ali to lay back on them and allowed Big George contaminated water to work. That’s why Ali didn’t throw a punch for all of those rounds he knew that medication need time to work in Big George’s body.

Ali fought a great fight, but Foreman aided him in beating himself! Big George didn’t properly pace himself, and punched himself out too early. He under estimated Ali and paid the price.

There wasn't a single boxing writer who thought Ali could win. The dodgy water might just have been chlorine or iodine to combat the pollution.

Fighters are notorious for making all kinds of excuses for their loses, and like George said, they don't seem to complain when they win. Nothing is ever perfect in combat sports. Accept your legitimate losses like you do your wins.
