My son worked as a sparring partner for Schulz when he was stationed in Germany. He was of the opinion Foreman lost this fight.

Watched it live, had schulz up by 2 rounds. I was right. The judges were wrong.

Axel Schulz ran too much in the fight... but I still think he did just enough to win.... There are also fights where George Foreman got a loss where he looked like the winner throughout the fight such as the Shannon Briggs fight.. so it goes both ways .. if you are fighting for a title you better bring it and impress and not jab and run

Definitely a close fight. George came in a little soft and underprepared. However, The old man still threw more and landed more punches than his opponent, according to the punch stats. He also was the one that pressed the action. Schultz didn't do enough to take the belt.

I'm in total agreement with the judges and Larry merchant on this fight. Watch the fight with the commentary disabled I think you'll see it differently.

@@yeeehaaaw5419, Not a lot of experts believe Schultz won that fight. However, lots of German fans thought Schultz won. That's because he put up a good fight as an underdog and landed quite a few shots. Also to a casual observer at the age of 46 Foreman always looked like he took more punishment. As you age you lose skin elasticity so you naturally bruise and swell much easier. Not to mention that George typically doesn't win by decision. Most of his of end in a KO. Which is why it surprising that are older slower heavyweight still managed to throw more and land more punches than his competitor. It was a competitive fight but a clear victory for Foreman. However, people are entitled to their own opinions.

Tbh.....based on these highlights, it sure looked like Schultz won this fight........but, if Big George was the Champion at this time, Schultz needed at least one knockdown to take the title away imho........otherwise, the Judges tend to not give the challenger of a title bout to someone that simply outboxes the Champion.......there usually needs to have a knockdown or of course a KO to the title to switch .....imho..........

Lots of title fighters are won by the contender by decision, including close or split decision with no knockdowns scored by the contender. Spinks vs Holmes, for example.

It's a myth. In no way shape or form did Schulz deserve the win. I viewed a high-quality tape of the entire fight in the slowest motion setting with the volume turned off. That way I didn't have to listen to commentators Gil Clancy and Jim Lampley rave in awe for all those shots by Schulz that did not find their target. For the record, I had Foreman clearly winning rounds 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 11. 115/113 just as two of the three judges scored it. Even Larry Merchant, who had poked fun at George in the past, especially in the Holyfield and Alex Stewart fights, the former of which he called a "massacre" by Holyfield and the latter a "one point" win for Stewart had George winning here. Just because Schulz, an unknown, given little to no chance of winning and exceeded expectations does not mean he deserved to win. All that grappling and grunting by Schulz in close does not make his offense more effective. Foreman frequently drove Axel back with those jabs. Schulz spent much of the fight circling and back-peddling. He was largely ineffective having to throw from a distance so when he did manage to land his punches lacked effect as they barely made contact. Foreman landed the more authoritative punches with solid jabs, body shots, and the occasional but very effective uppercut.

Shulz landed more scoring punches in more rounds, he won the boxing match and should have got the decision. Watching it at quarter speed or in reverse doesn't change that.
