A few bad cops wouldn't break the system. Police are put into life-or-death situations all the time, sometimes leading to a death that is the officer's fault, but America doesn't riot for all of those deaths. It takes something truly horrifying, and part of a pattern repeated over a long period of time, to go beyond breaking the law, and break the "contract of society" as described by Trevor.

Lawmakers spend years studying laws and history to craft future laws that are just and balanced. Police are expected to uphold the laws but they train for a handful of weeks and then are out in the field. These cops are not trained and vetted. There's also an attraction to the macho image of a cop in America. Compare American cops to the ones in UK and you'll get the idea that cops here in the US are allowed to escalate an interaction. An African American person stopped by a cop for missing a turn signal and the cop walks up to the car with his gun out... this is bewildering. It does not happen in any of the other developed countries. Cops in the US for the most part are not trained the way they should be and this is why the system needs to be overhauled.

Well I also think they are scared. If the police can kill a man right in front of you, what says he can’t do the same to you? Especially after you’ve given him a reason such as assaulting him. And the police then has an angle to spin the story saying he got attacked that’s why he pulled the gun or whatever. I think they were brave enough to record and spread the video of what had happened and they were brave enough to call the paramedics and yell at the police. We can’t ask more of them.

I felt everything you said. I have experienced this from an early age. I can remember being in the 1st grade and the teacher asked all of us what we wanted to be when we grew up. I said I wanted to be the president of the world. The teacher and the class laughed at me and one boy shouted out," You can't be president, your black." The teacher didn't object to his statement. This happened in 1979. The teacher was old then, I wish she lived to see Obama become president. I am a teacher now and it embarrasses me that she was a part of our occupation. Complete disregard for a young boy's elevated aspirations. I have never gone to jail, but my skin has allowed me the opportunity to "interact" with the police many times.

@Free Traders no shit, Sherlock 😉 that's why he explained it so detailed, so everyone who couldn't understand the importance and weight of this situation and the following outbursts of anger/violence, would be able to empathize and get a glimpse of a reality they never encountered themselves. My parents never had to worry that my brother would get shot by police or that we would get a lesser education or salary, because of how we look. I never experienced racism towards me (or much racism overall - where I live, people are pretty open), so apart from reading about it, learning in history classes or seeing a few minutes here and there on TV, there isn't much of an experience I could rely on to even try to get the bigger picture. So yeah, it's exactly for white people like me (seriously, I might blind people when I'm out in the sun) and I'm very thankful for it!

Trevor's point on 'social contract' verbatim: "I saw so many people online saying, 'These riots are disgusting, this is not how a society should be run, you do not loot and you do not burn, this is not how our society is built!'. And that actually triggered something in me and I was like 'Man okay, society? What is society?'. And fundamentally when you boil it down, society is a contract we sign as human beings amongst each other. 'Amongst this group of us, we agree in common rules, common ideals, and common practices that are going to define us as a group.' That's what I think a society is, it's a contract. And as with most contracts: the contract is only as strong as the people abiding by it. But if you think of being a black person in America who is living in Minneapolis or Minnesota, or any place where you're not having a good time, ask yourself this question when you watch those people: What vested interest do they have in maintaining the contract? Like, why don't we all loot? Why doesn't everybody take? Because we've agreed on things. There are so many people who are starving out there, so many people who don't have. There are people who are destitute when the virus hit and when they don't have a second paycheck they are already broke. Which is insane but that's the reality. But still: think about how many people who don't have, the have-nots, say: 'You know what, I'm still gonna play by the rules even though I have nothing because I still wish for the society to work and exist'. And then some members of that society, namely Black American people, watch time and time again how the contract they have signed with society is not being honored by the society that has forced them to sign it with them. When you watch Ahmaud Arbery being shot and you hear that those men have been released and, were it not for the video and the outrage, those people would be living their lives, what part of the contract is that in society? When you see George Floyd on the ground and you see a man losing his life in a way that no person should ever have to lose their life, at the hands of someone who is supposed to enforce the law, what part of the contract is that? And a lot of people say, 'Well, what good does this do?' Yeah, but what good doesn't it do? That's the question people don't ask the other way 'round. 'What good does it do to loot target?', 'How does it help you to loot Target?'. Yeah but how does it help you to not loot Target? Answer that question! Because the only reason you didn't loot target before was because you were upholding society's contract. There is no contract if the law and people in power don't uphold their end of it."

As a 50yo white man, I have been anti-racist my whole adult life -- and vehemently so for the last 20 years or so. I've spent years looking at hard truths and scouring the racism, prejudice, hate (and homophobia) that I grew up with out of my psyche. But I'm not trying to get people to see me as "one of the good ones" or some crap. I do it out of SELFISHNESS! I do it because I REFUSE to live without my soul. I DEMAND it. So when I become aggressive in my intolerance of racism, it's not because I'm some damn "hero". I'm just not giving up my soul by enabling, tolerating or ignoring your racism. Racism is a disease. Racists themselves may not be my enemy, but they are carriers of a disease that's going to have to go one way or another. So if you're a white American and you think that racism is only a problem for non-whites...

JohnnieVision If true or not, what did that have to do with his murder? None of that is relevant to what happen to him. You see, that is the problem. Rather than focusing on the injustice of his murder and those that murdered him, you rather try to dig and find some justification for his death. Trying to find why we should be ok with his murder or to justify why you think he deserved to die. Your thinking is why there are protests and anger that has over boiled into the streets. Because you rather find excuses for the abuse of power rather that finding ways to have equal justice for all. That’s what the protest is about, equal treatment and justice under the law. Not street judges and executioners. If you continue with your line of though, I hope karma hits you swift and hard. Maybe then you will understand when it hits home.

What stuck out to me with Floyd's murder was just how *casual* the brutality and abuse was. It wasn't a "heat-of-the-moment, snap judgment" situation - it was just a white man kneeling on the neck of a black man, who had no weapon, and the only allegation against him was trying to use a phony $20 bill. It was akin to seeing a fisher posing with his catch, or a hunter with his kill - it was dehumanizing as hell, and his coworkers did nothing. As for the rest - respect is a two-way street. If you don't get any respect, what the hell motive do you have to *give* it? And with peaceful protesting, I wish I could find a link to the article, but a reporter covering one that happened in England in the late 00's, early 10s asked one of the rioters what he felt destroying property would accomplish. His retort boiled down to "We protested last month, and hardly any news outlet showed up. Look around you *now* and tell me what you see." There were swarms of film crews from multiple, high-profile media outlets - and the reporter had to admit the guy made a compelling point.

I wondered then how the cops got away with it. It’s so much worse now.

This exactly this. Police excessive force is never good. However the most shocking aspect about Floyd's case (for me at least) is exactly what you described. An officer snapping or having a fast reaction (usually firing a gun) is bad. But it's a moment and I do want to believe that sometimes it was a fast decision incorrectly made not to be actively racist but inconciously this decision being influenced by wrong preconceived ideas buried in their minds even if not on purpose. But this... This was clear as day. Floyd was passed out and he still doesn't remove his knee. Like you said it truly does seem that officer was posing, like showing off a trophy of sorts, he was enjoying it. Floyd begged the officer. Bystanders warned and begged. And still... Honestly for me that is not manslaughter, is downright murder.

The $20 bill might have been the most uncovered parts. If you use cash, you could be in possession of a counterfeit bill at any time without knowing. If he did use a counterfeit bill, he may not have even done it with criminal intent. None of this needed to happen. I wish we could have heard the original call to the police. When I worked a register, we would tell the customer that this bill is illegitimate. We would confiscate the bill and allow the customer to make the purchase with other currencies. People will be shocked they have counterfeit money. I wish we could hear the call because the people who call the police set the tone the police will use when they arrive. The police should have been interviewing Floyd to track down the origin of the bill if it was even counterfeit in the first place.

They said I was loitering. I thought I was safe because I'm a bit lightskinned and pretty and educated and I sold appliances and countertops. But that opened my eyes personally.. I have had white folk threaten to call police on me for doing something they wouldn't bat an eye at a blonde haired girl or guy doing or saying. It's sickening. My first reaction was upset about the looting but that was my whiteness speaking, I'm really glad folks like you are speaking about this for those of us aware of our bias and willing to listen. Definitely feeling more sympathetic toward the looters now. Overall, most of the protests have been peaceful and a lot of people are still wearing their covod masks. brendan you have not really listened you heard what you wanted! Right now some states with peaceful protests have used the police force to oppress people protesting against police violence. Throughout history we can't speak is what he said, always being told this way is wrong, that way is wrong. This WE is now royal because even though the focus is Black lives matter people of all ethnicities are united in this cause. What he is saying is instead of Trump threatening citizens on twitter, had the president taken accountability and enforced accountability on police chiefs and governors then rioting probably wouldn't have started in the first place. By refusing to protect citizens of colour we have effectively been excluded from social constructs but it's a shock if we act outside of the social constructs. Lest we forget that white people taught us how to riot!

These aren't one-off incidents that nobody could have foreseen, they are persistent, repeated violations of public trust. They allow these crimes against the public to happen daily, but only the outright deaths make the news. They all know the state of things, they all know who these 'bad apples' are, and they don't stop them. They don't get them fired. They don't arrest them. They don't act to make things better. They let things fester for years, for decades. In that way, they are complicit. They deserve to be judged for that.

Thank-you, Trevor for a brilliantly considered message. I am a fan, and I am a white guy; 60 something. I remember the civil rights movement, I remember the riots ...almost everywhere at one time or another; Chicago, 1969 comes to mind. I remember the murder of Martin Luther King. At he age of 13, I was already wondering; what is going on here? One of my "jobs" is to deliver worship services to small, white, dying Protestant congregations in upstate, rurul New York. These Christian Congregations have been at it all of their lives, and they get it, but are shielded from the real clash. In my most recent message I talked about connecting the dots; the dominoes. And, then, to hear you talk about it brought tears to my eyes. You, and many of the other night show hosts, are our modern philosophers; keep doing what you do.
