Some people are critising Trevor for not buying her grandmother a house and new furniture. Just to let you know, if you read Trevor's book Born a Crime, Trevor explains that gogo doesn't want her furniture refurbished and certainly she doesn't want to be moved. And that applies to all our South African gogo's actually, the furniture and the house is part of them, they don't define success by flashy things but are content with life and memories!

At age 91, why would she wish to move away from her community, away from the life she built and held onto despite all the hardships? I’m sure he does other things to make his gogo’s life easier, gifts that do not disrespect her accomplishments. Their affection for each other is very evident!

I think every single one of us, no matter how we may interact and speak with people in our normal day to day lives, when we speak to our 90+ yr old grandmother or great grandmother we all take on a more gentle respectful tone. You can quite obviously see the way Trevor is humbled in his grandmothers presence.
I really loved the fact that Trevor came all the way to see his grandma and also brought his freinds #PROUD AFRICAN

Your grandma's house reminds me a lot of my grandma's. She had a similar set of figurines with magnets on the fridge as well. Se died at the age of 86 if I'm not mistaken. She was a fine Mexican woman from Guanajuato.
trevor's gogo: you and your mother were both so naughty gogo: is also naughty lol the way she got him to agree to fix all her things with that smile!
what is so sad and so poignant is when he is trying to convince his grandmother that white people work for HIM, and she literally does not believe him at first. that entire exchange is heart-wrenching and beautiful, somehow, at the same time.

Its a BIG difference between white and black parenting (cultural), Master at None is a good example. Trevor will never get the awknowledge from Coco and his mom, even if he went for presendent, This is a age difference within the cultural differences. The consequence is that he will have relationship problems, but he will be a great father.(So Trevaa, start healing by disposing the leapard and get yourself a German sherpard)

The heartwarming way she says “Madiba” shows just how much Mandela meant to his people ❤️ Also, as a fellow African I will say that my own gramma had also refused to move away from her neighborhood and the house that she loved, even though it wasn’t much by western standards. @@WhimsicalMe23 as an old person I agree and it's also about muscle memory. We've lived so long in the same place we don't have to think about where things are and how we need to move to stay safe and the older you get the scarier things like falls and bumps and bruises get so changes, even changes for the better are scary.
Amazing how she's 91 and can still talk like she's 60 or even younger! Just incredible!
The way she whistled, indicating that there's too much to say, and even how she expresses things is identical to the way the older generation in Tunisia speaks. It's the same. So even though it's a story from another coutry told in another language, I'm feeling a lot of familiarity and warmth.
Its hard to come on the daily show without someone complaining about Trevor bringing up race. As in why does he see race in everything. You have to understand that the victims of racism will always see race in everything. Trevor was literally a crime. Apartheid ended less than 25 years ago. Discrimination was still abound and land and jobs unequally shared. Trevor learned to take the bad in his world (racism) and turn it into humor. So yes he tells his jokes based on a foundation of race. Those of us priveldged enough to not have had race impact our lives should just move along.
