I have to admit that I am often privileged of getting close to some very special timepieces, but when Phillips, Bacs & Russo informed me that they were putting on auction the personal pocket watch of legendary George Daniels, well of course this triggered some serious emotions!
In this video report, you will learn more about this exceptional timepiece and the great man himself. But the good news don't stop there as we also got to see a very unique minute repeater Vacheron Constantin, a one of its kind, commissioned in the 30's.
The four watches featured in this video will be put on auction this weekend here in Geneva and naturally I can't wait to see how much this unique George Daniels will achieve.
Enjoy and Viva Watchmaking!

The Daniel’s watch is unreal. It’s one of the watches featured in his watchmaking book. His book has resulted in some of the worlds greatest independent watchmakers who have learned from it, and he invented the double escapement which has become the de facto standard in so many watches. It’s priceless, and should be in a museum.

IMHO the Daniels grand complication pocket watch should be either displayed at a museum or sold for over $10M, with at least half of the funds supporting new watchmakers/watchmaking schools.

Wow! Thanks for the video. That Daniel’s pocket watch is just in a different league when it comes to aesthetics, not to mention the accolade that virtually every part is built from scratch! So nice to see Vacheron not be afraid of doing a full restoration and rebuild on a watch. You wouldn’t necessarily think an old, magnificent building that is covered in grime, diesel soot, and half-eroded sculptures should be left alone but in horology (imo) too many wonderful vintage watches just look plain tatty and unappealing because of this obsessive culture of thinking that a decayed, damaged dial is always better than a beautifully restored one. Common sense wins over in this case.

@@WATCHESTVcom 'One of the most'? Name me one greater. Come on....no contest. Philippe Dufour? (for example). He never invented anything and he outsources everything apart from the movement. No contest. If Daniels had worked out of Switzerland and had put 'Swiss' on his dials he would be considered alongside Breguet. Swiss snobbery. But weirdly, England is the home of watchmaking, not Switzerland. Switzerland is only the home of mass-produced watches.

Great video! I agree that George Daniels is one of the greatest watchmakers of the 20th century; however, stating that he was the greatest is mere speculative hyperbole. To begin with, there were several great watchmakers in the 20th century. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to objectively determine who was the greatest.

Imagine that this George Daniels watch is worth far less than many footballers, who are of course a finite and depreciating asset. Which would you prefer? We live in a weird world... And then this bald guy presents a fairly basic Vacheron chronograph as though it is the Holy Grail :) The George Daniels watch is on another planet compared to this Vacheron. And the Vacheron even has a retailer co-signature (not good - no one cares about Turler, a bygone age jeweler). To explain, back in the day, people valued their watches/jewelry as much by the jeweler that retailed them as the brand itself. Which is why watchmakers struck deals with famous jewelers. Today that would be strange. Today if you buy a Rolex, for instance, you do not care about the retailer you buy it from - Watches of Switzerland, an airport, from the Dubai mall etc, it doesn't matter; you only care that you are buying an authentic new Rolex. You cannot imagine, for instance, a Rolex GMT Pepsi with 'Watches of Switzerland' also on the dial. I find myself smiling and almost laughing. It would of course completely devalue the watch. Who you buy from has decreased in 'value'. It does not matter, as long as you are sure that the watch is authentic. So.... I love the Vacheron gold chronograph but the Turler signage actually devalues the watch. But this dude, because he is invested, is trying to add value to the Turler signage. Over and out.
