Learning about the technical side of watchmaking can be tricky. It can be hard to come by documentation about how watchmaking happens, and even then it can be very hard to understand all the science and math behind it. As watch enthusiasts, or if you are just getting into watchmaking, you probably read about the innovation of certain watch companies or watchmakers. But maybe you have open questions about what you are actually hearing about when a watch is released with some sort of new technology. Written in 1981, George Daniels Watchmaking is a good reference book for you to have.
Twenty-eight years after its first publication, the best-selling Watchmaking continues to inspire and encourage the art of watchmaking, especially among new generations of enthusiasts. As a supreme master of his art, George Daniels' advice is constantly sought by both students and watch repairers, his understanding of the problems that can beset the would-be watchmaker, especially in an age of mass production, and his expert knowledge of the history of watchmaking being second to none.
Here, the making of the precision timekeeper is described step-by-step and illustrated at each stage with line drawings and brief explanatory captions. The text is easy to follow and care has been taken to avoid complicated technical descriptions. As Daniels is particularly interested in the development of the escapement - many are described in this book, several of his own design - the reader is encouraged to explore this aspect of watchmaking in even greater detail.
This classic handbook still remains indispensable to generations of watchmakers and repairers, and also provides a fascinating insight to the enthusiast and watch-collector who, until its publication, had rarely been able to admire the superb craftsmanship of a fine watch without understanding how it works.
You may not read the book from cover to cover, but it is such a good reference if you hear about some innovation a brand has made and want to know more about how it works and the perspective of such an incredible watchmaker.

Lovely book, Rodger Smith studied and built a pocket watch from this book, it took him around 18 moths, upon presenting his craftsmanship George was rather displeased with the efforts made, Rodger went away and spent 5 years creating his second time piece, this time George congratulate the efforts made and now proclaimed Rodger as a watch maker. This was the begging of their working relationship, fantastic stuff!

Does it matter if I don't like Breguet style watches with engine turned cases and dials?

Doesn’t matter at all! Whatever speaks to you is what is important. No need to follow what others like, especially with your hobbies
Some nice looking pocket watches in that book
