I work at Subway. Our bread dough starts in the freezer. Then it goes into the refridgerator. In the refridgerator we have a metal box with shelves made for holding pans of frozen dough so that the dough can thaw out before cooking. This box is called the Retarder. There are instructions taped to the door explaining how the retarder works. I laughed really hard when I got to the part where it said "if you leave the dough in there for too long the dough gets too retarded".

'Retard' means to slow a process. Therefore, a retarder is an apparatus that slows a process. You see them on engines or mechanical devices. A transmission retarder slows the vehicle down, much the same way an exhaust retarder (Jake brake) is used to slow a vehicle down. The word retard was originally used for people with Down's Syndrome or other genetic conditions that slowed and/or stifled cognitive improvement. Then the 80s happened and it became a pejorative. So, just like fat or ugly, we stopped using it because obviously if you stop using a word the condition ceases to exist.

Carlin said several times, "Controlling language is how you control thought." And he is 100% correct. You begin the process of changing the way you speak, and you begin to change the way you think. It's been a process that has taken several generations....but it's working. Look around and it's glaring back at you what he is talking about has done. Diabolical when you think about it.

  • @sethraelthebard5459

What is even worse is that people have squeezed even more humanity out of the combat condition. Modern language abbreviates everything. Now most people don't even call it post-traumatic stress disorder, just PTSD. And it has gotten so prevalent that people toss out the term to describe any feeling of discomfort. PTSD...soft language. 😢 It gets worse every day.

I was fired after 27 years. The reason is that it took me too long to grieve the loss of a brother and sister in a 11 month period (ALS, which I have the gene). I have PTSD because I was removed from my office in front of my coworkers. Because I could not go in the day after I buried my sister. I am an elderly lady who prefers softer language. It is calmer and more polite. I have degrees in Special Education and Theology. I refuse to call people retarded, cripple, or other nasty. And even if someone is "ugly" in my opinion, I would never say it. It is so simple, please, be kind no matter what. I am a senior citizen and my goal is to be kind. Don't bury me yet.
