The "gun problem" in this country is really a mental illness problem disguised as a gun problem. I'm very very pro gun, but I also can take a joke. So comedy about guns doesn't make me upset or anger me because even if they truly feel like guns are a problem what they are saying is still meant to be funny. Jim Jefferies is a legend in my eyes.

Wasn't an actual gun ban in Australia. We always had strict laws about gun ownership, compared to the USA, , but they were all at the State level and extremely disorganized. Port Arthur (one person killed 35 people and wounded 23 others) changed all that. If you want to own a gun in Australia, there is a process of licensing and registration to go through. People with felony convictions are not permitted firearms, some gun types are banned outright, and other types require special treatment. There are a number of requirements that have to be met, including how they are stored. In matter of fact, the number of legal gun owners and legally -owned weapons in Australia has actually INCREASED since then, but our crime and homicide rates (gun-related and not) remains much lower than the USA. Are illegal firearms still out there? Undoubtedly. But, again, check the statistics. Check the country. We don't talk about putting armed security guards or weapon scanners in our schools. Someone getting shot for whatever reason is rare enough to usually rate a mention on the news. Nobody worries about getting shot if walking down the street or if in a crowd. You need to have certain qualifications and go through a process in order to legally drive a motor vehicle, or to do brain surgery, or to fix electrical wiring in people's houses. Very basically, because someone unqualified who does any of these things can and will get other people killed. From the point of view of most Australians, there is simply no difference between this and gun ownership. If you want to own a ton of guns or even simply one, fine, but let's try to make sure you are up to the responsibility..
