Geometric Abstract Watercolour Painting Process
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This week, I've been painting some small experimental watercolours using the texture effects I explored the the last few week's videos to create large washes of watercolour, then painting really detailed stripes and areas of geometric shapes inspired by mid century art - particularly tiles. In this video, I'm sharing the process of painting one of these small works, before applying copper leaf and mounting to a wooden panel.
Projects are shared for personal use only. If you'd like to licence my work commercially, please contact me for a quote. I always appreciate a credit if you post work online that you've made from following a tutorial or using my downloadable line work.

I love this! I’m just learning how to use watercolor and have yet to actually make anything but this is going on my bucket list. That touch of copper metal leaf was a perfect touch. Thank you.

Oh, Lou …I really loved this !!! Original, unique….unusual…..totally fab. And yes….. definitely inspiring . I was mesmerised when you added the copper foil !!! Stunning 🤩 Really looking forward to you demonstrating the foiling technique. I also loved the wooden panels that you showed us, ….it sets off your art work so beautifully and is the perfect type of mount for this piece. Interestingly, just a few days ago, I watched a YT gel print artist who used a sheet of gold foil like you showed us here (in the copper colour )in this video……and she laid it onto the gel plate then lifted the plate and scrunched it up so that the foil became ‘crackled’ . I had never seen anything like that before, but most likely you probably have with your printmaking background. I just found it all so innovative and interesting. Thank you…..as always 🤩💕🤩

Thanks so much! So glad you liked it. I’ve not heard of using gold leaf on a gel plate, sounds interesting!
Awesome
Very nice, Lou. Thank you for the tips. When you do the video about mounting please let us know if you choose to spray a fixative or add any coating to protect the painting. Since it's not under glass I always wonder about "dusting" a piece of art. 😁
Just GORGEOUS
Very cool ! I would love to learn more on the metal leafing* Looking forward to more of your wonder . Thank you !
This is absolutely gorgeous! I’m so glad you showed up on my home page. I can’t wait to see more from you.

THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! I was actually trying to think of an abstract design I can do around a few windowpanes with a bird in 3 of them. I love this color scheme-probably my hardest thing to figure out! My painting is quite a bit bigger-all the more room to play with! Although I’m used to more loose abstracts; and to be honest, “mark making” scares me a bit. I did one very structured abstract last year and decided to play with mark making…I went overboard, 😂 MUCH too cluttered, but a good learning experience! Quick question; is there anything I can improvise with for some gold leaf I have-another glue, or maybe something like one of the mod podges?

Thanks so much, glad you liked it! As for the gold leaf - I’d say try a tiny bit with your chosen glue and see if it works for you.

Good luck with your project! It sounds beautiful!
Love this! What kind of spray bottle do you use for this? I find that I have too much water on the paper, which means when I pull the tape off, it peels off a layer of my watercolor paper too. I assume it's because the paper is too wet. Any tips?

Hi! This was just a plant mister but having played with it a bit, it was a bit heavy handed in applying water so I've since bought a small mister bottle for this purpose. I did leave mine to completely dry before removing the tape. I've heard lots of advice on removing tape without tearing the paper and think it's good to try a few methods and see what works best for you - I like sticking the tape to the table before it does on the paper to stop it being so sticky, other stick it to their clothes for the same reason. Otherwise, you can try heating it up with a hairdryer before you remove it - or buy specific artist's soft tape that's designed to be delicate on the paper.

@@LouDavis thank you for that, I will definitely give some of these a try and hopefully it comes out a bit better next time. I will also give a small mister a go, because I also used a spray bottle my husband uses for the indoor plants but it drenched everything. Maybe I just need a bit more practice overall 😅 I love your videos though, keep inspiring us all with your work 🙂
Hi! First! Bye!
