3 Simple Watercolour Exercises to Beat Artist's Block
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Do you ever feel that you want to make art but the idea of trying to paint a landscape or a portrait or a still life seems too challenging? For me, the answer is to make something abstract that follows simple rules, then when I'm done I feel more confident to tackle the project I wanted to try to start with.
While doing exercises like these, you learn so much about your paints, the colours, consistency, your brush control and about composition and creating visual interest. Plus, I love the outcome, the colour transitions and the range of values and tones, and the way these patterns create a sense of movement across the page.

Dear Lou I had reached the point of real frustration with my watercolour. Nothing looked anywhere like those all the KZread tutorials. I tried everything from simple flowers to portraits. (Landscapes bore me). Then I saw this lesson and it looked really do-able. And it was!! For the first time I am really pleased with my paintings and can't wait to try more of your lessons. I learnt so much more from these simple "exercises" AND - most importantly - it was so satisfying to produce the gorgeous little artworks by the end. It was like learning the piano and getting to play an actual tune after learning all the dreary old chords. So thank you very much for your classes - they have made me hopeful and motivated again. Cheers Gayle (New Zealand)

Paper can make or break a painting. I started with cellulose papers as they were affordable and I didn’t know how important 100% cotton was.
Stunning. Giving this a try this week. I love all your work. So happy to have found you. I am recently retired. Have never painted anything in my life. I am so enjoying learning. Thanks for your inspiration.

As a beginner and perfectionist / rigid non-artist lol This taught me so much and was surprisingly hard to allow the unknown to happen but it ended up beautiful!! It’s one of my kids favorite paintings and I learned so much about the beauty of mixing on paper. thank you

The answer to your question is YES. All the time. Ok maybe not all of the time but many times I want to paint and I’m not up to using much brain power that a landscape or still life takes. I want to have fun and feel free. These examples you’ve provided are absolutely perfect and they are stunning! Thank you*Thank you so very much for sharing your awesome ideas with us.

Hi Welcome! So glad you liked it :)
Such enjoyable exercises! I enjoy art in general but am newer to watercoloring (excepting a couple high school projects way back). I was recently asked to teach a weekly watercolor class to 6-9 year olds and have been learning as I go. I just tried all of these exercises today with tube paints, and used four colors instead of five just because. It was simple and helped me practice color mixing, brush control, and value. I’m going to have my kiddos try a version of the middle one. Thank you for your content, Lou!

@@LouDavis hello Lou yes I am starting out. Do you feel some times that oh someone has painted that already and then your stuck for ideas? I feel that way now. Not with your painting but I started to draw out what I want to paint then I looked on something i forgot what and it was done already. I was so bummed out..Do you at times feel overwelmed to even start?
Great ideas for quick and creative projects for newbies and more experienced painters! Thanks!

@@LouDavis sooo, I teach watercolors, just to those 12+ and adults. I would like to use these projects on my lessons, of course crediting you. I am also thinking of starting a playlist with videos of watercolor artists that I admire, so more people can benefit from your expertise, and sharing your video on my Facebook page as a watercolor artist with short, creative projects. Would that be ok with you?

Sure! Always happy for people to share where credit is given :)
New Subscriber here. Your exercise in the middle is probably the best warm up exercise I've ever tried. It sure shows you what your brush and paper are capable of and what they are not. I first tried with a W&N Series 7 #6 which was a fail and I switched to a Silver Black Velvet #8 and it was a dream! It sure put my hand control in doing long continuous strokes to the test as well. Thank you for sharing your tips!

Thank you, so glad you're enjoying them. There's a lot that gets edited out of these videos because otherwise they'd be ninety minutes long so quite a lot of rinsing, colour mixing, and umming and aahing about what to do next gets cut!
Hi Lou! I have been enjoying your tutorials very much, especially the ones done in Edinburgh, as I lived there many years ago! I was wondering what kind of plate you are using for mixing your palette?
@LouDavis
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The plate is just a random one I had, I think I got it from wilko - it would be better if it were white but I was feeling the need for a larger mixing surface.
Thanks for the videos. I just wanted to say that in the description and on your webpage, every Winsor word is written in WinDsor. That's something else😄

Love wavy lines Lo something very calming about them... Must be from living near the sea as a young girl. Ps. What tape get used for bourders please as the paper needs to remain unripped...
@LouDavis

Thanks! I think in this one I used some patterned washi tape but I don’t nevessarily recommend it - too expensive in the long term. I use cheap masking tape now but stick each piece to my table before adding it to the paper to reduce the stickiness.
I will try these….I have lost interest in painting and been feeling down…Hope this helps🤞🏻🍀🦋

Sorry you’ve been feeling down, I hope that changes and that you will find joy in your painting.

what tape do you use to hold the paper down?
Hello. Thanks for this tutorial. Very practical. I would like to know the brand or type of adhesive tape you use in the video. In my country I have not found anything that does not damage some types of paper, so I have to moisten the tape and remove some of the glue before applying it to the paper. I would like to buy a few abroad. Greetings.
@LouDavis
8 ай бұрын
There is no type of tape I can recommend that is completely foolproof. Some papers seem to tear more easily than others. I know some artists recommend Holbein soft tape but I haven’t tried it. I buy whatever brand from the diy store and tape it to the clean table surface before applying it to paper to remove some of the glue, and that works well for most papers. I’ve used scotch, 3m, and frog tape from uk diy stores and found them all pretty similar. I’ve bought expensive ‘artist’s tape’ from an art shop hoping to solve the same problem and it was worse. I hope you find a solution!

I've tried doing the petals several times, but they are flat and uneven-looking. Any tips?
@LouDavis

I guess my tips would be to mess around with them - try different ways of making the brushstrokes, use more or less water etc. It doesn't matter whether they look like mine, just use this as a jumping off point for exploring!
