We won the 1st test because we didn't have to get Root out.
Boycott is simply on another level to any other commentator. When Boycott speaks he does not simply describe the superficial present. He brings history into direct conversation with the present- making the test cricket of the now seem like it is just another chapter in a greater story. And it is rendered more, not less, meaningful for being so. His other principle virtue (if one another were needed) is the small matter of being almost always right about everything.

I said exactly the same thing as Geoffrey after the last test and got shot down in flames by some of my friends for it. Stokes got away with his declaration because of the exciting finish but his decision cost us that match - we'd have probably won if we'd batted for another 50 plus runs.

As an Aussie, I have to say that while Stokes is a brilliant cricketer from the same mould as Botham and Flintoff, his captaincy is lacking. This is typical English old school thinking where they make the best player the Captain. It doesn't always work.
Right on the money old chap. First Win, then Entertain. Bazball is full of hubris, playing Golf instead of practice matches, all the no-balls and dropped catches, declaring boldly in the first innings knowing that runs would be hard to score in second innings. the mad rush to hit boundaries instead of playing disciplined cricket etc Too late to fix now but do hope that lessons are learned for the future.
Absolutely spot on from Sir Geoff - As always . I really hope the England team get to listen to his advice . The fans will not care how entertaining the team is - if they don`t win back the ashes . Yes , we want to be entertained - but lets have some common sense and game awareness , too !
Boycott has been entertaining us for 60 odd years, im Scottish and we love him here
Good old Geoffrey. I have the 2005 Ashes DVD set - the roundtable discussion with Geoffrey, Richie,Slats, Greigy etc is priceless. Richie Benaud's face when Geoffrey says "hit em in the heart, give em some pain"
@chrisstewart8259
10 ай бұрын
Yep - "hit em in the heart, give em some pain", that was Jeff Thompson's raison d'etre! He detested English cricketers as pompous, arrogant and were there as target practice just for him. He regularly bowled at 95 mph and has the record for the fastest at just over 100 mph. I think Sir Geoffrey refused to tour Australia so he didn't have to face Thommo. Any comments from Pommyland?

Nobody had heard of Thomson before and Lillee [who Boycott had already faced in 1970/71 and 1972] was doubtful because of his back injury, so there was no inkling of what was to follow . 🎉 nice one Boycott said with passion lad 😊
'Bazball', against top class opposition, is a reckless gamble. It draws its approach from the glut of lucrative white ball cricket England now favours and above all else the IPL, where our players risk their test fitness in pursuit of millions. Test cricket's future looks doubtful and greed will conquer.
He should still be on TMS, the BBC have treated im shamefully.
Looking good, Sir Geoffrey! 🙂
Mark Wood should have been ready to play in this game. Would have been ideal for the wicket
Proper cricket talk from the master.
HARD TO GET THE MONKEY OFF YOUR BACK! Oddly that is a "common" theme of Management Consultants for 4 decades A T McKinsey, as they were called now Marks and McKinseys?
Outstanding!
The Spirit of Cricket is a term that is misused as an excuse when a side doesn’t like the way the Laws of the game are applied. The spirit of cricket was not exercised when the Starc catch was over turned nor was it with the amount of short pitched bowling used by both sides to tail Enders. With the understanding the ball is live until both teams deem it dead, Bairstow was caught out being dozy and displayed it enough times for the Australians to pounce when he left his crease again.
9:06 this aged so well hahaha. Plus Boycott saying winning is all that matters #hypocrites
Quite right Geoffrey. England made an ill advised declaration, batsmen made some ridiculous shot selections, England need a spinner and Bairstow is a poor keeper. As an Aussie let’s hope England don’t change its approach.
Spot on...
The sort of bloke that England needs to listen to.

Winning the Ashes is all that _Matters_ ? What about the " _spirit_ " of the game Geoffrey(!)
@chrisstewart8259
10 ай бұрын
Yeah, we Assues agree Geoffrey. So why all the fuss and crying about Bairstow? Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
It's a form of political correctness in my opinion for the England team to effectively say that entertaining is more important than winning.
So he thinks England should focus on winning, but wants Australia to apologise for doing the same. Got it.
Under Boycott the other team would never score and no player in the English team would make a mistake
Winning is everything ? but the spirit of the game Bro ?
Ah bring back the days of scoring less than 250 in 90 overs, turgid boring drawn matches, series wins dependent on the weather - England have only won the AShes series once in the last 10 years.
Excellent analysis.. hope they listen to his advise.. if they do, they still have a chance of a respectable result.. otherwise, these players, other than Root and the two grand old men, are so mediocre and ordinary and with their idiotic approach, a 0-5 whitewash is waiting
Why isn't Sir Geoffrey on TMS with Tuffers? He's still the best

Have to laugh at these comments about what England has done “for test cricket”. They are playing that way for test cricket, it’s because it’s their only hope of winning because it’s the only way they can bat after a decade or so of their obsession with winning a World Cup. That are incapable of defence. Just hit and hope that can hit for a while with the bowlers under pressure until they get out with hopefully a reasonable score. The theory is reliant on bowlers and captains panicking. If that doesn’t happen, they’re no chance.
Geoffrey after the second test - " Its the spirit of the game thats important "
Does Geoffrey understand the word hubris?
Why do they even bother ? The ghost of Bradman lives on !

Today he's bleating about the Australians not playing in the "spirit of the game". Make up your mind Geoffrey.

Boycott is a terrible hypocrite. "It's all about winning" and 5 days later he's criticizing the Aussies for trying to win within the rules. A horrible person. And he was always a boring batsman.
Old geezer says here its all about winning that matters and then nearly has a stroke whinging about how the aussies did not allow boof head bairstow another chance, like in back yard cricket.
And no writes an article saying it’s not all about winning lol
