    This goes way beyond a restoration...its more like an evolution. That axe never looked that good when it was new. Well done on both the cinematography and the Axe... your craftsmanship of them is superb.

    Superb! Nice to see someone do a vintage USA "flush" hang instead of the "proud" hangs that everyone, mistakenly, thinks is absolutely necessary. Also, good to see a MAN not afraid to get a lil sawdust, metal dust & BLO on his hands.

    I have my grandfathers Cabin axe, it still has that greenish coating on it! I'd love to get a proper handle for it. It was all busted and wrapped in tape when I got it with nails driven in to keep the head on.

    Wrap the bit in a soaked rag, heat the poll up some with a torch ( doesn't have to be red or anything since that steel is soft ) and hammer as much of the mushrooming back in as you can so you don't have to remove as much. You won't be risking the stamp as much if you do this.

    Got serious mushrooming on an axe poll ? Do not go straight to abrasives or files, otherwise you'll either have to leave some of it or get it all and take the stamp with it. Take a good 14oz ball peen ( the slightly domed face a good one has will help ) and get as much of it hammered back in as you can before you go to actually remove steel. If you have to you can wrap the bit in a soaking wet cloth and heat the poll with a propane plumbing torch. They're usually soft enough not to need much heat anyways.

    Great video and equally great axe, of not better. I've recently seen a couple of Norlund hatchet axes on eBay that are not the Hudson Bay style pattern, but more of a traditional hatchet shape to them. They also have noticeably longer handles than the usual Norlund Voyager hatchet. What do you know about these? Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work. I enjoy it and appreciate it very much.

    Honestly, is it better to find a good piece of wood and make my own handle, or just buy one from the local hardware store?

  • @KillingerUSA

    @KillingerUSA

    4 жыл бұрын

    If you just want to hang an axe and use it, go buy a handle. If you want a sweet handle with perfect grain, make it. I have turned many hardware store handles into really nice sticks as well just by thinning them out a bit.
