The fact that Zod challenged him so much is a testament that his experience as a soldier quickly closed the gap between. Supes had more power, but Zod was far more experienced in combat with equals.

Superman had like 30 years to be in the sunlight (which makes him stronger) and was all juiced up while having time to train his powers while Supergirl had roughly a few hours of being in the sun and was kept captive for all that time and still put up a decent fight.
