No they weren't. They were mad because the main character has no personality. You can give your side characters arcs and a personality, but when your lead is as charismatic as Henry Cavill, and he comes off bland and boring, you have failed as a filmmaker. Remember, Zack Snyder couldn't make Henry Cavill look charismatic. Henry Cavill is one of the most charismatic actors of this generation. That is a failure that speaks so much to Zack's inability to direct actors it is deafening. Michael Shannon carried this movie, because even though he also wasn't given proper direction, he's Michael fucking Shannon, and basically just played his character from Boardwalk Empire with Superpowers.

@@geoffreysorkin5774 They were mad because he wasn't Christopher's Reeve's Superman, who they naively think is Superman despite the fact the character hasn't been anything like him in both the comics and animation for almost 2 decades now ever since he was killed off in The Death of Superman arch in 1991 when comic sales for Superman were at an all time low and new readers didn't care for him at all. It was so bad Deathstroke comics were selling much better back then. So in other words they mostly criticised this film on the basis on nostalgia which isnt a valid criticism at all. That's called been biased and close minded. You know something critics aren't supposed to be when reviewing films. That's usually reflects on us the audience. But then again most critics are exactly that and have a clear and obvious political agenda when praising and criticising films. The Last Jedi been the greatest example of all.

@@taliamason7986 Remove the tin foil hat, and stop blowing a shitty director. The best live-action Superman is Dean Cain. Why? He had emotions across the spectrum, and he was able to be angry, to fight people, and to smile. Also, Superman has never acted in the comics like he did in this movie. Superman has never been Batman with Superpowers. You're thinking of Supreme when Rob Liefeld wrote him. He also doesn't throw his enemies into populated buildings. That's Hyperion. Also, Superman in the early 2000s is credited as one of the most important characters with bringing comics out of the dark ages of the 90s.

Which is funny, because when the DC heroes debuted, they were pecfect and charismatic characters, with happy and positive stories. Whereas Marvel heroes were imperfect beings full of flaws, and their heroism was sometimes questioned. However, the golden age of comics is over a long time ago. DC's characters have changed a lot from their first appearances. They weren't always dark and serious. I remember that in the Marvel and DC crossover comic, the Justice League questioned the Avengers because their world was in disorder, and that maybe they weren't capable of being heroes. While the avengers the world of the Justice League had lost its freedom. Of course, those comics have been out for a long time.

Michael Shannon's performance as Zod is a great part of what makes this film good. He portrays Zod's single-mindedness so well it makes you believe he'd plow into the stupid decisions he makes. Even though he's a general, he's ready to destroy a world that turns his troops into super-soldiers (like Jor-El suggests, he could terraform somewhere else, then have his cake and eat it too). He's willing to destroy an AI that has tons of lost history of the culture he claims to adore, because he sees it only as his enemy. A film that can get you past those contradictions and still be good, is pretty well-crafted.

"Even though he's a general, he's ready to destroy a world that turns his troops into super-soldiers" I've always thought that was the best part :D Zod could've taken the narcissistic route of preserving the Earth's environment (letting humanity live) because "the pain that my people will suffer in this planet's environment is worth the power that I will gain," or he could've taken the Social Darwinist route of preserving the Earth's environment (letting humanity live) because "the pain that my people will suffer in this planet's environment is worth the power that they will gain." Instead, he chooses to recreate the original Krypton's environment (wiping out humanity) because the power that he gains in the Earth's environment isn't worth it to him for the pain that his people would suffer. I have never, in my life, seen a villain put in a position where he could've make the selfish choice of letting humanity live, but where he instead tried to make the personal sacrifice of wiping humanity out.

1:10 - 1:17 I like it here how it shows Zod wish it didn’t have to come to this, like he knows what he’s doing and knows morally he’s crossing something. He knew deep down Jor-El was right but he has try because it’s his duty as a soldier

General Zod is a universe in himself a separate movie should be made on him. I think he is best general in the superman Multiverse .

The myriad of emotions conveyed in the last remaining seconds of this scene were absolute peak. Zod, a Kryptonian warrior and general has always had to shoulder the burden of his far-reaching decisions. He doesn't have the luxury of second-guessing himself. His decisions, in his mind, were the best course of action to take. Here and now, General Zod's old friend and nemesis, Jor-el, has planted within him the seeds of doubt, anger, and heartbreak. Doubt about the correct course of action to take with the Terraforming of the Earth. Anger at the very idea of coexisting with Humanity in their cities of squalor. Heartbreak over the fact that he had to kill, for the second time, another Kryptonian he respected and used to consider a friend.

Eisenbergs Lex is too quippy, talks too much, doesnt convey a man, more a college aged boy, not being able to keep up the facade of a ruthless, cold, thinker. Watch one episode of the Superman TAS focussed on Lex Luthor and you get what I mean.

@@deadbeef576 Again any non nostalgic arguments? In BvS Lex quite literally had Kal el killed, and moments before had him on his knees. Not even Ben afflecks Bruce Wayne could beat him down that bad. Oh yea *he's not the lex Luthor I know so he's AUTOMATICALLY BAD* I apologize dude, I absolutely should've remembered the universal law must be nostalgic in Zack snyders movies or it's trash law

Michael Shannon set the bar so high up for DC villains that no other baddies have even come close to Zod, not only was he a fantastic villain but he was a villain with a purpose unlike the other ones that just want to kill and destroy stuff just because they can, Faora was fantastic as well.

This movie would’ve been absolute perfection with about 15 minutes more footage mainly showing Zod and making him a bit more “lovable/hate to love”, if that makes sense. The actor is amazing and I think everyone would’ve enjoyed seeing him more.

I just realized that if they decided to adapt to Earth, they would have the same potential to gaining Superman's abilities without the added side-effect of being weakened by Kryptonite like Kal-El. They will still be vulnerable to it, but not severely weakened to exposure like Superman.

I love Snyders DC movies cause there is actual depth to the characters and not constantly trying to make the audience. The soundtrack in MoS , BvS and ZSJL is better than anything in Marvel's or later DC movies

Michael did an excellent job here. You can see many of his emotions as Zod - especially in the eyes, the pain, anger, regret and determination.
