Generac Generator Carb removal and disassembly

Ғылым және технология

Removing and the dissassembling the Carb from a Generac GP5500 Portable Generator. Had a fuel leak (shown in another video) I'm mainly recording so I know how to put it back together as its my first time taking this apart and I do not have the service manual. Thought it might benefit overs so edited out the "what the heck do I do now" parts and here it is.
The GP5500 uses a Generic 389cc chinese engine, the Carb is labelled "Huayi Japan".
I found a some corrosion from water in the fuel which I cleaned using Carb cleaner and a Q-tip and I also found some metal filings which I also removed.
Put back together and that fixed the fuel leak.

This is what KZread is best for. Thank you sir. Received this generator from previous owners when I bought my house. Looked like it was in good shape but they had left old fuel in the tank and the carburetor was suspect. I of course found this out when I lost power and couldn’t keep it running. I do a lot of woodworking and electrical around the house but I’m a little intimidated by motors. This was so straight forward. Got be back up and running and saved all the food in my fridge! By posting this, you made the world a better place. Greatly appreciated.

This video helped me get my Centurion generator started. I got the generator from my stepmom. My Dad bought it for their house just before he passed away. I don't know if he ever had it running, but it was full of old gas, and the carb had some nasty deposits. I tried to start it and nothing. I drained the old gas, cleaned the carb, and filled with new gas. The generator started on the first pull! Many, many thanks for posting this video!

2year old GP5500 developed a fuel leak. I opened the carburetor as shown in your video, sure enough the cone shaped sliding pin attached to the float was stuck open, no longer sliding in the fuel conduit. It was slightly corroded. Cleaned everything with carb cleaner, very lightly sanded the the side of the pin, and put everything in place. Voila, the generator works as expected, no longer leaking. Thank you for the great video, very instructional and superb quality.

This leak also happens on my GP5500. A tip: after you run the genset dry, there is still a little gas in the carb. With the fuel switch off, drain the 1/2 oz. or so of gas that remains in the carb via the small screw that is right on the bowl. Put a coffee can or something under the carb to catch the gas. Hopefully this will help prevent corrosion and build up in the carb which may contribute to the leaks. Dangerous defect.

This video was very helpful, thank you for posting. I fixed my Generac 2700 power washer today. If you haven't used your power washer in some time it is likely the carb will get gummed up and not allow fuel to pass. Don't forget to add your treated fuel. Simple job, took the carb apart cleaned all parts and put back together. Started right up.

Thanks a bunch for this video and the other video you have posted showing the leak. I too was scrambling to dust off my generator that I used to run once a month, but well, left it sit and ran the tank dry and let it stall when I put it away. Guess that's not enough to clean the line and bowl out.I used your video to take the carb off and only cleaned the needle and the seat with some carb cleaner, sprayed it once via the gasoline input connection and then again where the needle goes into - wiped it off so it didn't do any damage to the gasket and assembled back together and works like a champ, started on first pull.Tip -> once you put carb back on the motor, before you put any parts back, hook the hose up and open the gasoline valve to see if you fixed the leak before you put all the rest of the parts back on.I also noticed a drain-valve on the bowl - so for future, will drain the bowl with the little set screw on the side of the bowl as one of the other videos shows on here.Waiting for the snow to melt here in Virginia, hope lights stay on. Thanks sir.

Great Video. I had this exact issue with my Generac 5500. Hadn't used it in 9 years and did not drain the gas. Would not stay running more than 5 seconds today. SO, I drained the gas, changed the oil, cleaned this small fuel hole in the carburetor with a small wire, and it fired right up. I've never worked on motors or taken anything like this apart, this video made it easy. Thanks !

    3) Catch fuel leaking out of fuel line and carburetor. There could be quite a bit in the carb. 4) Wires don't need to be disconnected -- just unscrew the two bolts, one of which you stripped. That was also the tight one on mine. I removed it with vice grips. To keep from stripping a blunt philips should be used since the X on the bolt is shallow.

Great Video! I left the fuel switch open and the generator wouldn't start. I use gas stabilizer but I was told the 10% ethanol in gas can still form deposits. The video helped me remove the carburetor and carefully clean away tiny deposits in the jet holes and parts that gas passes through with a thin needle and single stiff wire. Reinstalled the carburetor and the generator started on the first pull. From now on I will shut the fuel switch and run it till the gas in the carb is done. Thanks!

After you reassemble the carb, attach a piece of gas line to the carb fuel intake. With the carb up, you should be able to easily blow thru the line. Rotate the carb upside down and you SHOULD NOT be able to blow through it.. if you can, you have a problem in the float and or needle valve system which will cause the carb to overflow. You can also do this prior to installing the bowl. If ok, continue but recheck when all is put together. Vise grips after using PB Blaster is the easy answer to loosen the solenoid screws without stripping them. Use anti-seize when reassembling.

This video was amazing. I consider myself a handy guy but never worked with motors before. Have always wanted to take apart the carb but never attempted until I discovered your incredibly detailed video. My Generac/Centurion 5000 (mod 0055770) was purchased in 2008 and used only once then put away without draining the gas. Three years later I pulled it out and tried starting it and couldn't. I noticed fuel leaking from the area of the carb so stopped messing with it and put it away.

Excellent video quality, stripped screws on the bottom of my carb too...after my first usage I had the same gas leaking problem! I shut the gas off and shoved the generator into a corner until now. Oh by the way a storm earlier knocked out the power around me and I got anxious and decided to start studying on how to get my generator back in service! I checked for spark, glas flow...and then determined it was the carb after I fired the generator up with only starting fluid...

My GP6500 would only run with the choke on. I cleaned the last two pieces that you unscrewed from the carb and used guitar E string wire to clean all the holes in that one piece at the 7:43 mark. One mistake I made was to put a q tip up that shaft that those two pieces came from. the tip of the q tip came off inside the shaft and it took me more than 10 minutes to get it out. Thankfully I had some surgical forceps I used as a last resort. GP6500 now running. Thanks Note at 5:07 the hex bolt should have a rubber o ring which you can' see here so watch that you don't lose it...and there is one on the other side of that hex bolt (6:13) as well, which got chewed up when I took it apart, so I substituted a plumbing faucet o ring which I had on hand.

Nice video. After watching it I confidently tackled my own generator. I did the following things differently: 1) Lifted generator handles up so the left one is not in the way of the air filter nuts. I noticed you removed an extension from your socket wrench when all you needed to do was elevate the handle. 2) The six nuts holding on the air filter housing don't need a ratchet wrench. They can be hand screwed with a socket and extension. Much faster, and you won't over torque.

Ur video was extremely helpful. My generator is 9 month old and I also had flooding. Generac was no help; I can't believe they didn't have a recall on this. I had trouble with the 2 screws on the selenoid. I sprayed them overnight with WD40 and I used a #2 Phillips head with a socket set. I took off the air filter and worked on the carb w/out removal. My problem was a stuck needle pin which i cleaned and replaced. I also found TheArcV's advice very helpful. Use high test gas and seafoam. -CJF

The needle moves based on the float position which in turn moves ("floats") up/down based on fuel level - Mine didn't have a spring, they are generally to dampen excessive float movement from vibration and if its damaged it could definitely be the problem. I'd try re cleaning it first before doing any adjustments. Then see if it seats properly and has free motion. Adjust the metal tabs to adjust the position of the float that closes the valve before altering the spring.

If it had a spring, they are generally there to hold the float open. So without it should be even easier for the float to close the valve, as the gasoline in the carb only has to lift the weight of the float and not also compress the spring. Check the float to make sure it doesnt have any gas in it and also the seals for any debris or missing o-rings etc.

MY Generac GP5000 needs about 4 short shots of ether in the air cleaner intake to start, the choke seems to not help. Once it's running, all is well. b/ Take the carb off, check to make sure the float is adjustment properly and has free movement (turn it upside down and see if it depresses the needle valve. One of the tabs may have got bent when it was taken again and may just need bending back. (google "set carb float" for tips). If that seems ok, remove the float and the needle valve and reclean the recess the valve goes into and check the valve for dirt or any signs of damage to the seal on it. Blow both clear with compressed air.

When the carb was taken apart I noticed the needle/post protruding into the bowl from the wire at the bottom was a bit gummed up. Is it spring loaded? It seemed frozen in place till I cleaned it and pushed in in and out. I assume it is supposed to function that way. The spring on the float needle seems functional but one of the loops at the top was stretched a little. Didn't know if either of these makes a difference. Thanks

When I took the bowl out and the carb, the float and needle fell out of place because I didn't know the float was held by the pin.. I don't have a spring that goes on the needle. Maybe something that I didn't see when put it back together.. My problem is gas leaks from what it looks like where the bowl seals to the carb.

    5) I stopped before the part where you removed the center nut to disassemble the innards of the carb. I stopped there because when I sprayed carb. cleaner fluid into the hole where the pin (that was removed with the two bolts) was, it flowed freely into the chamber. Fortunately for me, that was sufficient. I have only 5.5 hours of run time on mine, so I did not suspect any buildup.

Do you think it could be a build up in the nozzle at the bottom? I tried to start it last night and it would not start and thats when I noticed the fuel from the bottom. It was a very small amout, nothing like the fuel that was leaking out in you other video. Thanks

Hey, thanks for the vid. Same issue here. What is the device you remove from the bottom of the carb at 5:00-5:10 in the video, with the small piston-like assembly? Mine has some issues, might need replacing but I don't find it showing on my engine parts list doc. What is that called, and do you know what it's function is?

Where the bowl seals up to the carberator, it looks as the bowl has a couple slight imperfections. As not being completely flat all the way around.. I don't know how this could have happened. Was that like that since new? I only ran it once when I bought it like about 5 years ago just to see if it ran ok, never had to actually use it to power anything though. I was thinking I can get a new bowl from somewhere and see how that goes.

Your video was really helpful. My GP5500 carb was completely gunked due to my negligence. I've since cleaned & repaired it thanks to your guide. I'll be using no ethanol fuel from PA in the future & staying on top of proper maintenance. I bet the small engine repair shops are lobbying to keep ethanol in fuel. The manual says to change oil every 100 hours. Other than regular maintenance running, I haven't put mine to regular use yet in 2 years. How often do you change the oil if not in regular use? What are your thoughts on replacing the metal float pin with a polymer one in the carb? Will keeping up with regular maintenance (run to empty fuel-line/drain carb) be just as effective to prevent a stuck pin/fuel spillage. I 2nd the comment in appreciation of no-blabber. Great enclosure video tutorial also. Thanks for your time here, very helpful.

Change once a year or every 100 hours if that's what the manual says.

Where they attach to the wiring over the on/off switch area, The newer one may not be the same configuration, picture would help.

Well, I took everything apart again and cleaned thoroughly. The spring is a little kinked on the float pin so I would like to replace. Do you know where I might get a rebuild kit? Trying to send some pics but have to figure it out first.

This weekend I did what you demonstrated in the video (it was pretty dirty) and it started up right away. I let it run for about 5 minutes before I noticed gas dripping again from the bottom of the air filter cover. Turned it off and opened air filter cover to see fuel dripping out of the carb opening. Would not restart. Turned gas line off and posted this comment looking for some assistance. I did not replace the O ring rubber gasket which seemed ok at the time. Any thoughts?

Great video worked great for me and my gp6500e generac generator but i noticed after i took out the float and went to take out the main jet i could get the crew out but the long brass main jet is stuck inside. I didnt want to force it out with a dental pick or something so i just sprayed the heck out of it and worked fine. Would still like to clean this part how would you take it out? Again great video!

7500E's carb is leaking fuel badly. You just saved me a lot of cussing and fussing! Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Best vid I have watched in a long time. Good camera angles and not a bunch of mindless babbling. Subscribing!

Be careful when you put back the bowl screw, if you apply a lot of torque the bowl housing get break very easy.

Did you replace the o-ring? If so, where did you buy one? Did you solve this by using better gas or gas without ethenol?

Hello great video! 1 queston though what did you do to stop the leak, you just cleaned the carb and parts with card cleaner and put it back together? You used the same seals? Thanks!

I re-used the same seals. The issue was gumming up of the gasoline and/or corrosion was stopping the float valve from sealing. The seals themselves were fine so as long as care is taken not to damage them they can be re-used - especially considering these were nearly new seals.

If its leaking out of the bottom then at the very least you have a bad seal somewhere down there. I couldn't say if you have a blocked nozzle based on the leak. Your going to have to replace that seal at the bottom and while your in there you can check for signs of corrosion which might be the cause of both issues.

I was lucky and re-used all the gaskets as I just had some corrosion to clean out. I just googled generac spares and there were a bunch of results. Hopefully someone else will respond to your comment with a positive experience with someone.

have a yamaha max watts 7125 10 Hp motor, runs on starter fluid but not regular gas either carb issue or foweled and or spark tested ok what could be the issue traped air in fuel line???

  • @n1bpd

Out of the 3 things you need (Fuel, Compression and Spark) you have the last two from it being able to fire up on starter fluid. It could be air in the lines, but more likely something wrong with the carb or bad gas. If your carb has a drain plug loosen that with the fuel turned on and see if fuel drains - if so then it isn't trapped air. From there I'd remove the carb, take it apart and clean it/blow out all the small holes as it might be some debris blocking one of the circuits.

What's the green thing called at the bottom of carburetor? It is an electrical plug kf some kind but I cant find what its called anywhere. If that isnt working could that prevent gas from flowing into the carburetor?

  • @n1bpd

It's a solenoid (electrical on/off valve in this case) - it will cut off the fuel supply if the engine isn't running. If it isn't connected correctly on your generator it could definitely prevent fuel from flowing.

n1bpd Except the fuel solenoid on this machine is not connected and is apparently just for show. Dont believe me? Take a look at the orange wires on the unused engine mount at the top right of the engine...it is looped around and connected to itself. I saw this a few times at the shop i work at. Theres no possible way it can work. even if it is connected, it works in reverse, because its starting position is open. Its stupid.

Thanks for picking up on that - It's used on generators that have electric start (is what I was told). I should have made it clear that on the GP5500 that I have, it doesnt do anything and that it only matters if his is electric start.
