Filipino gay here. I have befriended two Spaniards, in which one of them is a good-looking man in which I had a crush on. My other friend is a straight woman in her 40's who told me that she might feel it weird, but she can't do nothing but respect the feelings of my kind. My crush, meanwhile, a good-looking man in his 30's, somehow acknowledged and appreciated my feelings when I confessed it to him. Sadly, he is straight and he is observably in a happy and stable relationship with a woman, so we cannot be more but just friends. My crush and I are still cordial and civil towards each other when we talked. It showed me how much tolerant Spanish society towards LGBTQ people nowadays. I once had a crush on a Filipino guy, he has a smart, educated and quite affable in appearance, but still get me appalled from his reaction after I confessed my feelings. Now, I am already blocked and no longer have any idea if he's even still alive and breathing.

This got me teary eyed as a gender fluid person--to know my ancestors would have embraced me and many others. I love how their understanding of gender was heavily inspired by their understanding of nature and that they came into the conclusion that it isn't static. Because it really isn't. They were the true enlightened ones contrary to the colonizers' heretic claims.

When i learned about this, I’ve learned to love myself more.

Tbh, I thought the PH is only tolerant of the LGBTQIA+. But I have always been curious because ever since I was little, I have always seen them in every aspect of my life, from uncles, classmates, to the next door neighbor. And, at least where I grew up, they were not ostracized or shamed (except for a few bullying here and there, especially with kids) but were treated with respect (at least outwardly). But now I think it is because of our pre-colonial culture. We may not be aware of it, but maybe even through those centuries, we haven't really lost that culture. This is really cool. I've heard about gender benders as prominent in pre-colonial PH but I've never encountered published articles about it, I was a little bit skeptical. Thank you for this. I hope topics like this make their way into the academe somehow.

Modern Philippines is definitely just tolerant towards LGBTQIA+ people but it's slowly getting better. Pre-Colonial Philippines is the BASED Philippines. If we weren't colonized, we still might respect people of LGBTQIA+ and our culture would have been much more vast.

Finally!!! I have always known how progressive pre colonial Philippines was. I hope that someday we can restore our culture and mentality without colonial biases. Thank you for this video!

This makes me so emotional. As a closeted BI person living with homophobic family, it's hard when you hear homophobic snide every now and then especially from people you're supposed to love and trust. Dakal a salamat koya.

It is such a great timing that I came across your video days after a member of LGBT won the Miss Universe Philippines title. I am really disappointed that a lot of Filipinos are throwing hurtful words at her, saying that she is immoral and less of a woman because she is in a same sex relationship. Sadly, we never went back to our pre colonial beliefs regarding gender fluidity while the colonizers who taught us to be homophobic are now moving forward and accepting LGBT and same sex union.

This video should have a lot more likes. I'm a Filipino. And it's so eye opening to learn about all this. It's sad that the current culture doesn't fully accept the LGBTQ+.. I hope videos like this will help open the minds of more people. Yes!! More videos on this topic, please! And Filipino mythology! ❤️

This is interesting and I am just wondering how other ethnicities in pre-colonial Philippines view homosexuality. We Bisaya also use 'Binabaye' to call gays, and Bayuk sounds close to Bayot. And... Go for a Part 2 nito para sa Philippine mythology. Inaantay ko ito.

I was watching a video a few days ago, and was quite surprised to learn of the acceptance of homosexuality in Viking society. Homosexuality was accepted in almost all ancient civilizations - Greek, Roman, Japanese, Polynesian, Southeast asian etc. But it seems that the root of homophobia are the three middle eastern religions namely, Judaism, Islam and Christianity. As I am gay and catholic, I would like to know why.

Not all Greeks were comfortable about homosexuality. Plato, in the dialogue Symposium seems to permit and even admire it, but "Laws" condemn it as "against nature," so he says. Homosexuality was mainly okay - if you were in the Greek upper class. Most in the lower class seemed to deride it as a form of perversion. But as things stand, it's surely better in Judeo-Christian religions, but Greece far from a "tolerant" utopia.

ancient cultures were always open minded when it comes to gender and expression... ancient greece and romans were famous for their bisexuality, native american indians believe on two spirited person were one person can have a masculine energy and feminine energy. japanese samurais engage on sex with men too, a mexican tribe from oaxaca called this as "muxe" which pretty much the equivalent of the binabae and bayugin of ancient philippines as discussed here... having sex with the same sex in the ancient world was pretty normal so that's why when the catholic church gained power they have considered it as a sin to help control the population and convert more people

In my town in Aklan we view gays as lucky because most gays there are the breadwinner of the family. They're dance instructors and entrepreneurs. Lesbians though, are tolerated but gays are respected better.

So the bayuk and the the fa'afafine of Samoa are very similar... Probably even share the same cultural roots. It's just that the cultural significance of the fa'afafine in Samoan society was mostly preserved into modernity while the cultural significance of the bayuk largely eroded.

This is a very important documentary that should be preserved, and proudly shared. There's just so many misleading things we were taught in school. Now we have Kirby and other Filipino Culture Warriors who are enlightening us with the Truth. Thank you for sharing. 🤓

Such is why the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines disgusts me. Why are they celebrating cultural erasure, colonialism, genocide, and discrimination? If I were to return in time, I would help my people fight back against the arrival of Spain. Perhaps, unified our country so it would become a council of kingdoms, without the erasure of the minorities. LGBTQ is a Philippine minority. They should be treated with respect, similar to the indigenous and the people with disability.

Same sentiment. My homophobic religious tito used 500 years of Christianity against my gay lifestyle. So I explained to him that his religion was just imported here, gays have been here before his beliefs.

I've always been interested in different cultures. I watch videos like this but about the Japanese, Koreans, Chinese and many more. @@KirbyAraullo It all started actually with her princess phase (thanks Disney). I told her that in the Philippines Princesses were not born but are made. My family is from the mountains of Panay. Growing up I was told stories of these mountain princesses. How they trained so hard to be learn their communities history, tradition, arts and music. I am proud to say that my daughter took this as a challenge to become a Pinay Princess. We are now exploring other roles like the pandays, warriors and babaylans. Your videos and books do help a lot. I still find it funny whenever Princess Mayumi comes out each time my daughter proudly asserts her Filipino heritage.

Filipino (Standard Tagalog) and Indonesian (Standard Malay of Indonesia) doesn't have gender pronouns for example in Spanish the word for he is *él* the word for she is *ella* in Filipino the word for he and she are 1 its *siya* in Indonesian is *dia* . In English *him* is for man and *her* is for woman but in Indonesian its *nya* and in Filipino is *niya* . In Spanish the pronoun of group of men are *ellos* the group of women are *ellas* in Filipino it's *sila* it's gender neutral and in Indonesian is *mereka* it's gender neutral. In Indonesian and Filipino the word for son or daughter is the same *anak* and so on.
