For me, it’s really a trigger point when anyone says that America “saved” the Philippines from the the Spaniards and the Japanese. In both cases, our victory over the colonizers was stolen from us. All the brutalities that the Philippines and Filipinos went through under the Americans remains unknown. Sadly, it is a widely accepted idea that America only did good things for the Philippines.

It's a little bizarre for a music video, because the meaning of the song is a little disconnected, but in many ways that's very clever. What I liked about this concept from Alamat is it’s not used to hate Americans now because this already happened centuries ago but it’s used to educate and open the eyes of Filipinos that this happened. We have moved on and we should move on from this so that we can use this to remind us that there are still injustices and oppression happening and as part of the minority race, being Asian, we should be proud and we should stand up together against racism with our Asian and POC brothers and sisters. We can move on and forgive but we will never forget. Always be proud of who you are and where you came from.

You should stand with everyone against racism. Do you think leaving white people out is racist? Or only Asian and POC can be victims of racism. Lead with your heart and avoid pushed propaganda from mainstream media because they have an agenda to hold us all down no matter what you look like. There's such a bigger picture beyond the color of our skin. And the last couple years have been more charged with racism because of politicians/govt/technocrats/rich and celebrities whom all are rich. Worldwide these people hold down the common everyday regular people - doesn't matter your color. Or just feed into it and remain in victim mentality or what I call "victimology". Stay blessed palihog

The U.S. and the Americans were often portrayed as the "heroes," or the people we should look up to because of the "good things" they've done, in our history textbooks. After watching this video, it feels like our we were fooled. I don't hate Americans today because the bad things their ancestors did is not their fault. But I still can't help but feel angry and disappointed about what they did during those time.

Instead just have an opinion and be aware of these injustices. What you hate is not the Americans but the sense of helplessness you feel when our kind are exploited and taken advantage of because we are not as learned as they were. But times have changed, be wise when it's your time to fix our country. Every effort is not in vain, all you need to think about is the future, if not yours, your children or the children of your children.

🇵🇭 Thank you very much Kuya Kirby for this. I didn't watch the "Kasmala" MV by Alamat, but I am planning to since it first came out. Now, after watching first this video, I can now watch and listen to the MV with more background knowledge and information, context, and deeper appreciation for Alamat, their MV, their song and its music and lyrics, their intentions, their theme, their concept, and their message. Almost everything was still fine with me when I am watching this educational video until the photo or image of the tied Filipino indigenous child appeared, which then gave me chills and made my eyes teary all of a sudden. Then the rest of the video gave me more and more chills and made me even more and more teary-eyed when more historical references appeared almost one after another. It was only until the near end, when I slowly felt alright again. I admit, I still have my own personal and individual biases, preferences, and the like, for I am not a 100% tolerant, open-minded, liberated or liberal-minded, accepting, and the like kind of person, but it's still hard for me to realize that and how us humans are still capable, throughout history and even nowadays, to justify, rationalize or reason out, defend, cultivate, educate, indoctrinate, promote, and most especially act out and live out, among others, various forms of inhumanity and aggressions in terms of nationality, ethnicity, citizenship, race, religion, etc. such as but not limited to genocide, the human zoo, human maltreatment, treatment of humans as animals, imperialism, white supremacy, and slavery as what were discussed, touched, or tackled in this video. I live in the US and I sometimes forget that this information is not openly taught in the Philippines. But now that I think about it, when I was schooling there I was barely taught anything prior to the Spanish colonial period as if we did not exist until we were “found”. This is unfortunate and needs to change. Maybe if we implemented more inclusive and holistic learning in terms of Filipino history across the globe maybe we can quell and mitigate this idolization and desire for white saviours. There are so many moving parts that filipinos need to have a discussion on.

But the point is what we need the most is to learn instead of hating. Learn it all so that you'd know what to change and how to change it, that's the point of history. It's not there to create animosity. It's being taught for you not to make the same mistakes again.

Kudos talaga sa nakaisip ng Kasmala kasi even graduating na ko sa college, hindi ko alam yung tungkol dyan. Na may nangyari pa lang ganyan sa mga kababayan natin noon. And it saddens to know that exploitations have been rampant 'til today and hideous at the same time, and only few people can see that. Once the education is manipulated, the rest will follow talaga. Kaya kung mabibigyan ako ng chance na mahawakan ang History subjects pagnag-work na ko, videos niyo po ang ipapanood ko sa klase.

the only reason i even knew of Igorot Village is because I am an Igorot, being close to Baguio also meant experience these American influence from the cowboy fashion to cowboy music and the like. im also honestly admiring ALAMAT for their codeswitching instead of Tagalog-English only, it represents what Filipino really is as a country of, as you say, interwoven cultures. (besides, it doesnt only make Filipinos racially aware but more ethnologically conscious that we Igorots or Mountain people do not wantonly butcher dogs, additionally we dont have tails nor do we malisciously beat a chicken's wings for Pinikpikan. And it also reminds us of the Aetas and the other groups that has African likeness because until now they are displaced and discriminated yet we only ever seem to care about African-American in their battles in the US but not the fact that the colorism and IP-discrimination is very alive in our own country)

Thank you for the mind blowing informations and knowledges we learned from your video Sir Kirby. I'm so happy that I had a deeper knowledge and history behind the mv of ALAMAT's KASMALA. Its so tricky that we MAGILIWS just thought that it was just an admiration and love to a special someone but with the history incorporated behind each scenes in the mv actually depicts the reality and truth revealed in it. The racism, slavery, barbaric exploitations and discriminations experienced by our indigenous people and the Manongs really unravelled the true treatment of white people on us before. I just realized that our Education System and our History as well is untrue, deceiving and needs to be correct for future generations. Kudos to Direk Jason Paul Laxamana and all the people behind the creation of ALAMAT. Your vision and advocacy to really ignites Nationalism and Patriotism in every Filipinos through music really is a success. ALAMAT is not just a MASTERPIECE but a LEGACY.

I feel like it's worth mentioning that the whole song itself seems like it's in the perception of one of the manongs. It's quite obvious that at the start, the person singing is so infatuated by this woman's beauty, yet it's worth nothing how he keeps saying he doesn't know why he fell in love other than the physical appearances and is ready to follow due to that appearance. It's usual for love songs to express how they don't know why they've fallen in love just to enhance the romanticism, yet in context to this, it more so sounds like the man has been brainwashed into thinking this beauty is worth his dignity, even if there's no reason why it should be. Like saying: "Oh, she's white. She must be beautiful and smart, superior even," since this is what America influenced. Eventually, as the song progresses, particularly after the first chorus, it sounds like this time they're talking about the promises of good fortunes in the US. The line; "Daw isa ka diwata akon nadangtan. Sa kalayo, gusto ka makahampang. Pasensiya lang kung medyo nagarekta, game ka?/It's as if I met a goddess on fire, I want to play with you. Sorry for being straightforward, but are you in?" sounds like they want to take part in something since whoever's preaching is smart and beautiful enough to be trusted, then there's the line "Ako'y nahulog sa patibong at 'di na makawala/I've been caught in a trap, I can't break free," sounds like they've gone through it and realised that they can't turn back. This is when the manong has actually moved to America and witnessed how harmful and fake it actually is. After the second chorus, "Sa hiro' mo yan sabihon, gare nagbabayle sa diklom/Express it through motion, like dancing in the dark," Is most likely reference to the riots and violence that were enacted. The rest of the song from here now feels like he's realised how truly different she was, since she's the only person who's ever been this horrific towards him. The last chorus also feels a lot more different too, since now it sounds like the man was starting to mock how fake and ridiculous all his praises sound like before while also emphasizing how different America is from the rest. I'll say this again, the lyrics are so greatly written and I feel like people underrate it for the visuals. The visuals are definitely just as good, but the lyrics should be more recognized too.

Finally! I hope more people across borders learn about this. I'm Igorot and I've read and heard stories when I was a kid on the World Fair especially on the St Louis from dog eating and, head hunting and performing rituals by force or coercion. As far as I remember, they only had dogs and kamotes to eat, and just that. They died of the cold an pneumonia because of they were forced to wear bahags only. Like you, I'm glad Alamat featured parts of our untold history. I was screaming, "Finally! Someone else is retelling this!" The closest to this I saw was a play entitled St. Louis Loves Them Filipinos in UP. I hope it'll shift some history books and include stories like these, and the manongs. I hope you'd tell more stories of the Watsoville Riots and its aftermath on how that shaped America and the Filipino diaspora perceptions too. Agyaman tako!
