Gen Con and The Iceberg of Tabletop Gaming
Tabletop gaming is BIG. Bigger than you probably realize. Your friendly local game store stocks the biggest brand names, but that is just the very tip of the iceberg. To glimpse the rest of the iceberg I'm going to show you around a big game convention called GenCon. GenCon is like a census for the gaming industry, and this is the best way I know of to try to take it all in. The first time I witnessed this it opened my eyes, and I hope it's enlightening to you as well! :-)

"The Iceberg" is the reason I'm so glad Vince Venturella and Tabletop Minions made a game (now two!), because they're both people who are very visible in the Warhammer space, and these games might introduce people who would otherwise be resistant to trying a new wargame that's quite different from what they're used to. There are so many amazing games out there, even just minis games, and GW doesn't deserve to monopolize the space like they have, especially since Warhammer isn't for everyone. It's so good to see it when people find a new game they're truly excited about.

Thanks for doing this video - it's hard to describe to people how big Gen Con is, and how much positive gamer energy it produces! I live in Indianapolis, so I'm a bit biased in terms of wanting Gen Con to stay here (going all four days without worrying about hotel costs means more money for games!), but I will say that despite the political decisions made in the state, the business community has always been very supportive of Gen Con and its attendees, and was instrumental in getting the state legislature to walk back its ridiculous "religious freedom" law a number of years ago, as well as expanding the convention center specifically to accommodate Gen Con's growth. While local businesses obviously benefit financially from Gen Con, they take steps to be welcoming that I think go above and beyond a merely transactional relationship - local stores have sales geared to the event, bars and restaurants will create special Gen Con-themed menus and often decorate to cater to attendees. Indeed, because downtown Indy is fairly compact, the whole place kind of turns into a Gen Con party for four days! Hopefully Gen Con will continue to work with local businesses to make sure that despite the politics of the state, the people of Indianapolis will continue to make all Gen Con's attendees feel welcome.

I live in Indy as well and it would be a real shame for Gencon to leave. I don’t entirely agree with the logic of smothering states that you don’t agree with politically. Unfortunately there are a lot of people that live in these states that can’t afford to move to other states. Take a look at average moving costs and the fact that it is tough for people to leave support networks. I think it is a bit naive, just to say if you don’t agree with the state politically don’t live there. I think providing a safe place for people to express themselves in a regressive state is important.

Thanks for taking the time to chat with me and my friend outside the Paint and Take area - highlight of my Sunday! @@foxbat51 (I apologize for the length but I hope you read it!) They have a different opinion than me, oh well. I think the hobby should be accessible to everyone! Heck, I was able to get guys with years of combat experience under their belt to start painting minis when they got home. Even got some fellow Marines to play D&D and I certainly don't agree with the politics of all these gentlemen, but we all became and remain friends regardless. Very mixed bag in the military, left, right, up, down, etc. Wouldn't be a much of a life if everyone agreed with everyone all the time! So I wouldn't deem a person less in worth or not loveable. Simply because they disagree with you. Better to involve everyone and respectfully disagree, maybe even try to change people's minds. But you can't do that if you're completely intolerant of them! But hey, that's just my opinion mah friend. Now, I simply MUST get back to finishing painting my new D&D character!
Been to GenCon twice. It is, as he points out, a massive insane event. So many people, so many games, it's overwhelming even for 4 days. Honestly though, I found that while it's awesome to see some new games coming out, watch some tournies, I don't think I would go back after my two trips. The amount of people is overwhelming and people have no self-awareness, I was constantly getting hit, bumped, or trying to get people to move as they stopped in the busiest spot and were holding up everyone else. Not to mention, this volume of people makes getting food at the food truck alley a task unto itself. You'd think going to a massive convention like this with the actual companies/vendors there, the prices on some of the items would be, perhaps, slightly better than you'd get at your FLGS. Nope. I did a cost analysis after the event of what I paid for board games, what they ran at my FLGS, and also on Amazon, and I would've spent less had I gone to my FLGS and Amazon. We actually realized this on day 2 when we visited a local FLGS and they were running a "GenCon" deal, had a bunch of the board games we'd seen in vendor hall, and the prices were CHEAPER than the actual vendors were selling them for back at GenCon. Lastly, the cost. We ended up staying about 30 minutes outside of Indy the second year (first year we had family living there) because that was the closest, reasonably priced place you could stay. The cost of everything that week just skyrockets to take the most out of people attending. All of this I guess is to be expected, since it is a massive convention hoping to make money, not just exist. That all said, I've since been to smaller conventions in my home state and I've enjoyed those significantly more. Less crowds, able to get to a table to actually playtest games, prices were more reasonable. It was just an overall better experience that didn't require driving through Ohio.

I had a blast with my son at Gencon this year. It was our first time going and we immediately started planning to go again next year. We didn't get to participate in too many demos or games (my son is only 6, so he was a bit nervous about trying to learn rules with a lot of people around) but we got to get really excited about a lot of different games and minis. We loved the artist area. And of course, the monster truck was his favorite. He may have tried to climb in when I turned around for a second to talk to the guy's who made the game it was there for. It demonstrates just how big that place is that I was looking out for you and other youtubers and I only saw Tabletop Minions and Vince Venturella from afar once. It's incredible. I completely missed the food truck area and the overflow to the sports arena.

Unique attendees are one way to measure attendance, but the more usefull metric from an economic perspective is how many nights people stayed there - which is how conventions tend to report their numbers primarily
I was at Gen Con 13, 1981. Hi Brent! I got into gaming in the 80s through a friend who had Chainmail. When I got back into it after a 30 year hiatus, your mini painting tutorials were instrumental in helping me improve my skills. You are unpretentious, smart, so willing to share your collective knowledge. That can be a rare thing as people can get absurdly competitive about the weirdest things (side note: I'm a software engineer and I believe knowledge should live in sunshine and open fields so it can evolve and grow.) At any rate, you have a penchant for DIY versus "oooh....check out Citidel's new 40$ priming stick!"). I appreciate that. Latest invention: old gravity feed paint bottle (hole in the top) that I use as a mixing ball dispenser. My "mini holder" is a fridge magnet clip threaded for a mic stand. It can be handheld, or attached to my microphone stand stuff (gooseneck, 1" straight stand, various bases) I'm old and the stability via the weighted base helps my accuracy. Rock on, Brent! Too bad I'm all the way in California, love to meet you at a Con. We definitely share a certain "Square pegs DO fit in round holes with the right equipment" ethos.
@StainStlRat

Side note: Citidel painting tutorials are just insulting, and quite frankly pretentious in the worst way. They are just a recipe for feeling defeated and dumb for the newbie. I'm surprised they keep making them and I'm even more surprised that a publicly traded company doesn't care enough to create a focus group or *shadow people new to the hobby*. /rant off :)

Nice! yeah we really remember those moments when the hobby opens up like that :-)
Would have loved to bump into you at GenCon. I'll be on the lookout next year to say hey. Also, cool to see the pan of LaserCraftWorkshop. They are an offshoot of my LGS and Mark is one of the best guys in the industry.
This was incredible to see, thank you so much, we don't have anything like this in South Africa
I started going to Gen Con while it was still in Milwaukee. Went the first year it was in Indy and it had really changed, ie. massive numbers of people and more organized. I personally won't be going again as IMHO it has gotten too big.

I've heard there are a couple of great smaller conventions in Wisconsin! I know the crowds at modern gencon can be overwhelming, but it sure is a spectacle to behold.
Great video! I'm not a tabletop gamer but I still found this video engaging and informative. I just might go to the next Gen Con just for the fun atmosphere.
great video and greater message as always.... keep on going
My friend talked me into going this year. Simply put, I am going every year because holy hell is this the place to be.
Thank you for another awesome video!
so. much. love. happy painting to you too.
Big cons are super fun. I see a couple of my faves in your video like Privateer and GCT Studios :)
