Not being significantly stronger than the 3060-line of cards isn't a huge deal breaker for me, since they're more power efficient, I really don't mind generations of smaller performance uplifts with much improved efficiency. It's extremely rich from NVIDIA saying it's not their fault the 4060 Ti 16GB is so expensive because of the clampshell design. They were the ones who decided the 4060 Ti should have a 128 bit bus and this restricted them to this solution. Designing the 4060 Ti from the ground up with 6 2GB GDDR6 chips instead of 4 would've avoided this situation entirely and would've made the 4060 Ti a card you could actually recommend, but nope 8GB is enough (it's not).

Look, 16gb is nice. Really nice. Like, the kind of vram the 4070ti should have. The problem is, this is a 4050ti card, with a strangulated memory bus, clocked too low to really make a difference. And, somehow, they did this without cutting either version of the card. That is surprisingly impressive! But at the end of the day, this card that is barely on par with the 3070 is still barely on par with the 3070. At 1080p, it won't make any difference whatsoever. At 1440p, theoretically, it would outperform, but the strangulated memory just can't do it, and having to rely on DLSS3 and frame generation means that this card will look worse in 2023 than the 3070 did in 2020.

@@1O1O11 It’s just because of the price. It performs about as well as a 3070 that was the same price last generation. Of course if you consider actual street prices during the scalpocalypse the 3070 was more likely around 1000 bucks and compared to that it’s a steal. But today you can get a 6700XT that is about as good for much less or a 6800. A 3060ti that is almost as good is much cheaper as well right now. The card isn’t terrible but it’s too expensive according to most people. It’s not the first time nvidia sells a smaller chip as higher end. The GTX 600 series was the same but that also increased performance compared to the 500 series despite using smaller dies. There is DLSS3 but not that many games use it yet and not all will. Also I believe most people bought a new card last generation so there probably aren’t that many people left with old enough cards to looking for new right now.

I think it's strange that there is now a 4060TI with more VRAM than both of the 4070 models...after seeing this video i am fairly sure NVIDIA would have received better reviews if both 4060s would have had 12GB (using a 192bit bus without this clamp configuration) and 4070 should have been 16GB with 256bit bus. The 4080 is a completely dead product this generation at its price point, anyway. People complained the 3090 was pointless because it was only 11% faster while being absurdly expensive... so Nvidia fixed that by making the 4080 a 4070ti, and so on and so forth. If they had made the 4090 the full AD102 die and kept it at 450W and the let the 4080 use a 10-15% cut down die at 375W there would have been a big enough performance discrepancy that wealthy enthusiasts would still have bought the 4090 but the rest of the lineup wouldn't have looked this god-awfully stupid.

But in my opinion RT isn't mature enough yet to justify the performance hit for the subtle changes it provides, unless you're on a 4090. The average scores that you showed at the end almost prove Nvidia's point, with the difference between the 16GB and 8GB card being only around 3%. However, I think that it hardly paints the correct picture: the averages, if I understand correctly, only include the scenarios where the 8GB card didn't suffer significantly from the lower amount of VRAM. There is a case to be made for that, namely the "you don't need ultra settings", but on the other hand it meant that you had to disable ray tracing pretty much across the board in order to avoid abysmal 1% lows in some games and missing textures in others. I think that this review called for 2 sets of averages graphs, the one that was shown and the other which would compare the two cards at higher visual fidelity (i.e. with raytracing), which the 16GB card is perfectly capable of rendering. It would go on to demonstrate how cheeky Nvidia was when they not only released that tiny piece of silicone on a small PCB for $400, but also completely and deliberately nerfed it when it comes to use with technologically modern settings.

It is what it is. I just bought a 3070 for $355. $380 if including tax. Because I needed something to swap out my gtx 1080, and wanted to reduce as much incompatibility as possible or having to do more precise driver wipes if I went AMD. And I did want to try out an nvidia rtx gpu, to see what all the hoopla is about regarding dlss and it's supposed ray tracing advantage. Since I already have an rx6800 and rx6600xt. Both which for my purposes have been perfect (I don't like want to use any upscaling in the first place). So I really wanted first hand experience to see if nvidia is truly worth all the more money. I'm convinced they aren't, and yeah I already know 8gb is way to little, but the 3070 was the best choice, cheapest, that would at least do 4k temporarily, until I can get a proper 4k machine. So yeah, I feel disgusted every time thinking about the purchase I just made, because it needs more vram, but I at least will now have first hand experience to feel good about, to justify. being overly harsh on nvidia :P . Because they are in control of the gpu market, and they are the reason it is terrible. They should not be given any mercy, where as I think AMD does need some, to hopefully create balance and competition.

don't worry. this channel has been talking about 8Gb being too little so much that they are now kinda cherry picking the best games and scenarios to prove their point. i mean, yeah, 16gb is better, but the truth is that 3070 will probably last almost as long as 4060 ti, provided you are ok with lowering textures and resolution here and there. i believe that raw power of the cards will kill them both BEFORE 8 GB becomes too little for 1440p/1080p + high + dlss gaming (which is not all that worse than 1440 + ultra + no dlss which extra VRAM unlocks). i also agree that amd has better hardware for the same money, but at the same time, nvidia has dlss which evens things out a lot. dlss perofrmance is as good as fsr quality. that way, nvidia actually gives you more "free frames" when you need them the most, at the same time reducing the need for extra vram. that alone kinda makes up for not being as good hardware wise. TLDR: With just a little bit of compromises (simply not maxing everything in games @1440p), 3070 ain't worse than 4060 Ti. (bigger problem is 3070 ti having only 8 GB, and 3080 having just 10. those cards would benefit much more from having more vram).

@@svinjadebela6893 They aren't "cherry picking" the games. They started out with The Last of Us Part 1 and said "look, this is how this show is going to go from here on out". Then The Callisto Protocol came out and they said "yup, we told you", and now we're up to 6 recent games where the base performance is playable at Ultra if you weren't running out of VRAM. By this time next year that will probably be the case for 20 or more recent and popular games. It sucks to dial down texture quality, because it's the only quality setting that doesn't require additional compute power. You can set a game to Ultra, but dial down the texture quality to Potato and the game runs exactly the same, but looks like... potato. Similarly old games where the modders make new high-res texture packs for suddenly look amazing. So, no, your last statement isn't correct. The 3070ti is neither more, nor less, hampered by 8GB than the 3060ti. The 3060 got it right with 12GB. Textures do not require compute power, so from the midrange and up you should get enough VRAM to last at least a console generation.

You can actually improve CB's graphics quite a bit just by installing one of those big high fidelity mod texture packs. Also, better your base textures, better your upscaling will look. Upscaling needs data to work with, and texture data is free of performance charge as long as you have enough Vram.

I wonder if on those situations where the settings are taking up practically the whole of the VRAM buffer if the fraction that's reserved to drive a monitor doesn't actually amp up the performance issues. At least on some 3d rendering applications (other than games) you can get better results by having more than one GPU where typically the less capable would be used as the display adapter while the GPU with the most resources would do the heavy lifting with the rendering part. It's interesting that games like the Callisto Protocol used roughly 8 GB even when a pool of 16 GB is available while others like RE4 Remake and TLOU Part 1 go above the 10GB mark (while leaving more than enough VRAM for the remaining Display and Windows visuals to contend with) On the other hand and while the thought of having games not being limited is nice it's kind of outrageous that a game would need more than 10 GB of VRAM while running at 1080p honestly... It's one thing when you're on Quad HD or Ultra HD (1400p and 4k respectively) but at 1080p even on the highest settings that sort of VRAM usage is absurd. At that level Devs would be way better off using normal resolution textures rather than going overboard with the resolution and amp up the actual polycount as that doesn't hit the VRAM nearly as hard. Specially since Nvidia clearly doesn't want 8GB of VRAM to be the entry standard (considering their first non 8GB card this generation is over 600 bucks and now they're charging 500 bucks for this 16GB 40x0 Ti)

as someone who's had to upgrade due to my gtx 1080 being unsustainable for us and showing signs of dying vram. i decided to get a 4060 ti 16gb because of its high vram, 3060-3070 like performance for an extremely low power consumption, looking at the difference in consistency between the 8gb and 16gb model, completely justifies spending the extra £100 to me

RX 6500 XT had 8GB variant which is I believe also in clamshell config since it only had 64bit memory interface and it was only $20 more expensive vs 4GB version! If using Nvidia logic, this would at least need to be $50 more expensive! Anyway, if RX 6500 XT needed $20 for 4GB extra, 8GB extra in clamshell should be $40. And remember that this is 2022 pricing which is less favorable (at the very least the RAM chip is more expensive). I think it should be priced at most $50 more expensive. More than that is just being greedy or trying to intentionally make the product look bad (maybe to upsell so people buy 4070 instead).

Was looking forward to upgrading from my 1080 non Ti this gen... looks like I'll either be waiting for the next gen which will probably be as much a waste of sand at the prices they'll come out at relative to this gen... but still 5 is bigger than 4 (or 8 vs 7 and etc.) or maybe team blue will pull a rabbit out of its hat with Battlemage since at this point I'd be willing to ditch the team green and team red duopoly out of general principle...

I got a 6800XT recently and just finished my new build. I would love to have had a 4060ti had it been better performance and better pricing, but for $500 it made more sense to get the 6800XT over any variation of a 4060ti. With that, this 6800XT is loud sometimes.

I think it might make a good prebuilt GPU since the associated pc will likely be of the lower price brackets, and it'll likely be great for small form factor PCs, but as a regular DIY card for 500$ this is just awful
