There’s next to nothing left of what’s in this film, some of it is barely recognisable, really interesting footage, makes you want to go back in time and have a walk about.

Lived in Gateshead until 1956 - the High Street looks much different than I remember - I was 8 years old, when we moved to Denmark - my father being Danish - am now 74. But still have lovely memories from my school time - All Saints School with miss Conway.

Looking at the part built Trinity Square shopping complex on the left of the road at 2:12 I would date this footage as around 1965. Trinity Square opened in 1967 and was demolished in 2010. I always thought it was an eyesore! They built some really awful buildings in Gateshead in the 60's, St. Cuthberts Village etc!

wow I've worked in gateshead town centre for 34 years and the only buildings I recognised were mainly the terrible 1960s ones, what a mess they have made of it and continue to make of it. looks like there were some nice buildings there at one time, very few left

Nice to see the railings and greenery on Durham Road opposite Whitehall Road and Hartington Street - just as I remember from childhood visits to my Gran in the sixties. And what's there now? A completely pointless flyover. The traffic planners very nearly destroyed Gateshead town centre - the Metro Centre did the rest.

Fascinating stuff. I always notice the names of shops when I'm in a high street. Bradley's, Dawson's, Jackson's, Elliott's, Walron's - do any of these still exist? You see fewer and fewer English-named shops with each passing year, sadly. Black and white is a tough psychological barrier to overcome. It makes everything look ancient, prehistoric. But in reality if this was in colour, people would be surprised by how familiar everything seems. The cars have changed, obviously, but apart from that, life carried on then quite similarly to now. Videotape was expensive back then and most people weren't able to film very much material. It unsurprisingly wouldn't occur to anyone to film ordinary scenes of daily life, such as driving around the streets. But this is the kind of material that is really captivating when we look back and try to remember/understand what everyday life was like then.

It looks far better than, then it's is today!! 2023...gateshead high St, (cental gateshead) is dead,
No litter all over the place, much nicer
Around 1968 before Gateshead council and Developers destroyed our canny town.
The time when UK was a peaceful country and nice people ...
Nice to see when England was so English

Traffic is just as bad as it was hahah
😅if you think this is chaotic try driving the same route around Gateshead and Newcastle today what with bus routes, one ways, cycle only and clean air zones , Mark my words , People will abandon gateshead and Newcastle city centers, its already started , Welcome to 2023 its like a third world , Ps the iconic Tyne bridge is in a shocking condition
2021 and it really hasn't changed that much! Always been a dump! Lol
