I remember seeing the real father Christmas in one of the department stores in Gateshead when I was a little boy. Possibly in Jacksons.

It was. They started to wreak it around when this was filmed. 1968. Now we call it...."Gannon's Ghost town".

I’m not from Newcastle area, but my parents were, and they moved up to Eyemouth in 1971. My dad passed in 20013, he was 92, and he was born in old Byker. He fought in ww2, and when he came back worked as a miner and then driving machines on the demolitions & building of roads etc in the 60’s. He would’ve known all these areas very well. It saddens me that old Byker was totally destroyed, and all these other great old streets, in the name of progress. It’s like going back in time watching these films. It’s a world all its own, a place and people in time, now all but forgotten. It’s sad. I think more films should be made of the streets as they are today- because one day everything WE know will be destroyed the same way.

wow I've worked in gateshead town centre for 34 years and the only buildings I recognised were mainly the terrible 1960s ones, what a mess they have made of it and continue to make of it. looks like there were some nice buildings there at one time, very few left

"Hotbed of Methodism" ? My Ar*e! I went to All Saints Catholic Junior school from 1965 till 1971. 150 in our School. The Protestant school, Prior Street was 100 yards down the road. 150 Protestant kids. I never new any Methodists? Now Gateshead city centre is a "hot bed" of Druggies, p*ss heads and Work shy skanks!

Gateshead born and Bred. 1960, Hector street. Sight of Metro station now. Id guess this footage is 1968-69. I glimpsed my House at Lychgate ct. 1968-69 was when the Planners destroyed Gateshead. The Multi- story monstrosity was started in 69 i recall. Then they pulled 5 Blocks of Chandless estate to run the vile flyover thru. A stake in the heart thru Gateshead. The planners and councillors who approved it should have been shot. They wreaked Gateshead and its never recovered!
