Gas Masks for Fire Season Buyer's Guide

Not all respirators are the same. Some only filter smoke particles and allow carcinogens through whereas other masks offer very high levels of protection as you inhale smoke during wildfires. Sign up at bit.ly/34futCW to get member-specific content in our weekly newsletter.

I'm glad to have this correction/clarification info from an experienced source. With the high quality of City Prepper's videos would it be possible to edit the video to share the correction about the firefighters tank contents? I respect the personality and attitude of City Prepper's content and I intend no disrespect. A simple text overlay with the correct information about the contents of the FF tank would help maintain the consistency of quality information and content. Thank you to the above viewer for the correction about the gas contained in the tank and working to fight fires. Thank you to CP for the content, please keep up the good work!

Face masks are an absolute, but maybe go over, cover filters for your home. I have a room filter using a hepa filter, but it only will filter one average bedroom. So have a room picked out that you can gather the family and maybe sleep in. Keep snacks, games, etc. handy.

Good video. One consideration. I have several gas masks for members of my family and we use two filters not one. I have found that if your just sitting around one filter is fine but once you become physically active you breathing can be restricted with one filter. With two you can even run for short periods with no problems. Also everyone should try their masks and do a preliminary fit and address any fit or comfort issues now.

be careful when buying filters, don't buy them when on sale because the shelf life will be less than 20 years. They will cost about $80, but will be invaluable when you need them. Be wary of your surroundings, if you live near a nuclear plant or if you are in a potential fallout zone of one.

Good video! The Myra mask has two filter ports that allow a shooter to shoot left or right handed without the filter getting in the way. Due to an extreme environmental intolerance I wear a full face mask every day, a 3M 6800. The advantage is that it looks less tackticool, has a large field of view and with the twin filters, the mask is well balanced. Don't forget that if you put a combination filter on the Myra, the mask will become quite heavy on one side. The Myra filter you showed is a class 2 filter and that removes 94% of all gases and vapors from the air for which the filter is intended. I myself wear class 1 filters that filter 80%, which also saves a lot of weight. To put everything in perspective for a person without any PPE, the TLV (Treshold Limit Value) of a substance should not exceed the value of 1, if they wear a half face mask, the TLV may be max. 50 if they wear a full face mask may be the TLV 2000 (if the oxygen percentage is not lower than 19%) Rules regarding the TLV and the use of PPE's can vary from country to country, always check yourself whether you meet the requirements set by the (local) government.

If there is no oxygen then your combustion engine will not work. I found this out when a train wrecked in our county and chemicals were released. It was heavier than the air and displaced it causing many residents cars to die and they perished. One family four wheeled it over farm land up wind and survived. Something to consider.

I just bought a Parcil PT-100 full face piece respirator. It is a step down from a gas mask. If I am in an area where I am in need of a gas mask, I am doing things wrong and am in a true world of hurt. The aforementioned respirator uses proprietary filters which are fairly cheap. The filters are rated equilavent to an N95 standard and also filter out acid gases. However, the respirator can also use more common bayonet style filters (3M) by unscrewing the gray proprietary filter adapter. The propriety filters are slightly cheaper than the bayonet ones aside from particulate only models like the P100 models you showed. I do not live in an area prone to forest fires. Forest fires are not a huge concern to me.

Sorry CP have to correct you on the filtration part. Particles with a size of 0.3 microns are the most difficult to filter. Particles larger and smaller are easier to filter. A N95 filter filters at least 95% of particles with a size of 0.3 microns, particles smaller en larger are filtered better. A N100 filters at least 99.74% of particles with a size of 0.3 microns. The smaller the particle, the more subject they are to Browinan motion, they are so small and ligt that they are bumped by other particles and fly in all directions and so they are caught in the filter medium. Imagine you have to run through a maze of blackberry bushes that is 0.6 ml. long and meanwhile you are being bombarded from all sides with skippy balls. Then try to get to the other side. Particles with a size of 0.3 microns have the right mass to not get knocked off course, yet are agile enough to make the turns in the maze. Larger particles crash into the walls because they are too heavy to make the bend and get stuck in the blackberry bush.

Should definitely be bette than nothing. HEPA is supposed to be something like 99.95% for the 0.3 micron particles. I used MERV 13 filters for my central air last year and while not nearly as good as HEPA in the low particle size end, it made a huge difference so I’d expect HEPA to be more effective. It will probably also depend on how well sealed your room is.

So what mask should I put in my 10 year old daughter's room in case of fire ? That she could grab quick to leave the house and breath more safely ? From what I understand, only the last option is safely breathable.

A good breakdown of what the masks and filters can and more importantly what they cannot do. Kris, If I might add once your viewers purchase their mask, regardless if it’s a half or full mask, once you get it home take the mask out of the container and try it on for fit and seal. Please have someone help you hold the head harness on the back crown of your head then ‘cinch’ the straps according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Label the box(es) with the person’s name so you can grab and go. Lastly, use one of the ParticleMax P3 R filters to practice taking it off and simulate putting a new one on while your wearing the mask. The last thing you want to do is try and fumble with a new mask to get it seated properly during an emergency. Ditto with the filter. Practice with it now BEFORE you need it. I wish MIRA would make a training aid filter for their customers to practice with instead of having to open a real filter.🤔

My son has health issues, where I need to consider masks. My son is allergic to latex and even non latex medical gloves. We have tried a few masks, he is either allergic or the mask doesn't cut the smoke. The smell of smoke, tobacco or coffee trigger crippling migraines in him. What mask would be safe for him? When fire season comes he has no place to get relief from the smoke from California fires. Is there anything reusable?

Not sure if you knew this but actually when I was employed by the fire departement one day I refilled scba cylinders that what you wear in burning building they contain special compressed air not oxygen !!!! air is about 21 % oxygen and did you know oxygen can explode while it would be safe to fill a water fire extinguisher with compressed air as a propellant? I have never had an experience of refilling an oxygen bottle !!! I would not want to risk filling a fire extinguisher with compressed oxygen I dont even know of a way to do it though it would be safe to fill a water fire extinguisher with compressed air as propellant.

A box fan and a 20x20 hepa filter is going to do you more good than trying to wear a mask all day.

It's .3 micron, not .1. N95 means it is rated to filter out 95% of particulates AT .3 microns(not down to). All filters are tested at the .3 micron level because particulates at .3 micron are the hardest to capture. When they get smaller, they have such little mass they exhibit what is known as "brownian movement" or motion... in which the particle travels through the air in a zig-zag pattern, making them far easier to capture. This is why HEPA filters(like that P100) also filter viruses which are smaller than .3 microns (covid being .08-.12 micron from early estimates in 2020). (Disclaimer, I am not an expert... I just did a ton of research and everything is verifiable) For 3M respirators, I suggest looking into the model 7093 p100 filters. They are encased in plastic and decently protected from the elements.

You need S.C.U.B.A. for most fire/smoke situations. That is why you see firefighters wearing in when they go into burning buildings! Don’t fool yourself.
