    Gareth has taken us as far as he’s been able to. This mentality of being proud of what we’ve done and living off past disasters is imo damaging. It’s about winning and being a winner you need to be ruthless in doing so. We didn’t have that winning edge/mentality when we actually played better than the French but they dug deeper to come out on top. I’d like to see someone like Thomas Tuchel or joachim low. Both who’ve won at the highest level provide us that edge to lift a trophy with this crop of players.

    Hate to say it, but I think foreign managers is a terrible idea for major footballing nations. They are inevitably outsiders to the existing set-up and when it goes wrong, it goes very wrong indeed. A lot of what Southgate has done brilliantly (off the pitch) has been rebuilding the damage done by the Eriksson/Capello era.

  • @palatialgolf

    @palatialgolf

    @@futurememories1660 that’s a fair comment. But what I would say was the FA fucked it completely with Capello in terms of match up with English football. Someone like Tuchel has dabbled with the PL and done well. Also has a completely different demeanour. In terms of English managers. Eddie Howe won’t take it now, potter just got the Chelsea job and maybe Sean Dyche? I wouldn’t say that’s an upgrade from Southgate but Sean’s never had the firepower to play with so why not.

    @@futurememories1660 I guess my concern about Southgate (granted its still very raw) is he needs to go away and think about it. I don’t think he should be fired but I think he’s going to walk away from it. His comments afterwards didn’t make me feel like he’s got that extra gear to get us to lift a trophy. Croatia, France and Italy we either reacted when we went behind or took the early advantage but didn’t kill the game off. Steve Cooper whilst doing U17s needs an higher tiered job to warrant the England job and he’ll be in contention with potter and Howe once they’ve done their respective times

    As a French fan let me tell you this was an uncomfortable game to watch. For the first time in the tournament, missing Kanté & Pogba felt like a genuine concern. The big-game experience of our senior players made the difference (Lloris, Varane, Griezmann, Giroud). As for England's actual chances of being World Champions, it seems you guys need to look at what the recent winners have implemented differently than you have so far: - Oustanding goalkeeper with demonstrated leadership qualities (Buffon, Casillas, Neuer, Lloris... all captains for club & country). - Defensive fullbacks (Sergio Ramos, Jérôme Boateng or Lilian Thuram were all asked to play fullback despite being world class center backs). - A stable attacking line (If you take Giroud - Griezmann - Mbappé as individualities, they are pretty similar to what you could asemble with any English trio. Main difference is the 3 French players start 90% of games together. Same can be said with Klose-Podolski, or Villa-Torres). - A great coach. No disrepect, but you can't expect someone who only coached Middlesborough to achieve the same results as giants of the game like Del Bosque, Lippi, or Deschamps.

    Not taking Ivan Toney was criminal. I always feel a plan B is crucial to win a tournament. The fact France scored 2 open play goals with Mbappe being pretty locked down is proof. A long range strike and a header. We try and walk the ball into the net then therefore rely on set pieces or the ref to make calls in your favour. Whipping in a cross for a big striker like Toney or a 30 yard screamer we just don’t have in the locker for a tight game. We saw in the euros. The moment Italy locked down sterling we were poor. As time goes by, I think the overwhelming takeaway will be of a huge opportunity missed. The young players did well, but they'll never play again in a tournament where so many big teams under-performed, where so many top players had retired or were coming to the end of their careers. It was poor game management from Southgate. Neville is barmy if he thinks that Southgate will suddenly succeed at future tournaments which are going to be much harder than this one was.

    I think this is a bit symptomatic of the media now. Everything is fine, don't worry, everything is great. Not only for England int football, this is pervasive in our media. Here is the truth : Gareth Southgate is a good manager, he has performed well but also has not had any hard paths or draws and has been the luckiest England manager to have ever lived in this respect. You would have to say the team have not performed above par and have had unusually easy paths to the final. However they have performed well at times and have shown more promise than previous teams. They have not been fantastic, the situations they have been in have been fantastic. Gareth has done a good job and developed the team well, including the likes of Bellingham early, he is a manager who is good at developing the mentality and build of the squad, but is quite average tactically. This unfortunately his weakness, and he should leave the position and make way for another manager. However he has had some success, with a very talented pool of players.

And the cherry on top of that in my opinion if someone’s who’s job it is entirely to die so and only hit the target for millions of pounds a year to not even get remotely close to hitting the target from 12 yards away with no one around you so no excuse it honestly rather embarassing.

    Aside from a very poor German side, Southgate’s team have beaten everyone they should have beaten and lost to any half decent side they’ve come across. In the 3 ‘successfull’ tournaments they beat Senegal, Ukraine, Sweden, Colombia (pens), Denmark (on a non penalty) and a terrible German side. In the same tournaments, they’ve lost to Belgium twice, and went out to Croatia, Italy (at home), and france. In those games, they were second best aside from the game last night. I have no great desire to see Southgate leave his job, he has done quite well, but OK no more than that. Anyway who is the obvious candidate to replace him? No foreign manager has ever won a world cup (nor will they in this edition) so Poch or Tuchel? Never managed an international team so obviously some risk anyway. Potter or Howe? Not leaving the best club job they may ever get and also never managed an international team. So who is going to do better?

    What are you doing on here!!??? With your logical thought and well rationalised arguments! There's no room for that on KZread comments. We need knee jerk reactions from people who watch 4 England games every two years before returning to EastEnders, coronation Street and strictly for the other 700 days. God... It's like you actually watch football and know what you're talking about.

    @@semiseriousgooner Sorry...my account got hacked. For me Southgate has to go, his cautious approach is wasting our attacking talent. Why did he let Kane take the 2nd penalty? It was obvious the pressure would be too much. Stupid to take off Saka and should have brought on Trent and Maddison instead of his favourites Mount and Sterling. He's tactically inept and it's always the same, we bottle it against the big nations. There are loads of managers who could do better than Southgate...we should go and get Joachim Löw, he's available. Look what he did with Germany.

    Beat: Wales, Iran, Senegal Drew with: USA Lost to: France So basically, you’ve beat everyone you should have done, and failed at the first real challenge again. Got it. “Punching above their weight” what is he on about? Look at the squad. It’s one of the best squads in the world. Semi-final should be the MINIMUM. Such a loser mentality to say they’ve punched above their weight. You’re not Wales or Ireland or Scotland. You’re a huge footballing nation with endless resources to build a strong national team. This WC was another failure for England. Simple as 👍

    i did, the day they gave Southgate the job. i refuse to buy into the media fantasy that he is a good manager, the non-competitive qualifying and easy routes to the latter stages was the only thing that got him into those positions. every time they play a good side, they fall short. could have had 3 trophies in the cabinet if they had put a real manager in the dug-out. all 3 were there for the taking.. The media are already campaigning hard for him to get more millions for failing again. so, same script in 4 yrs time. enjoy! ;)

    I think what's happened is that England have so badly underachieved in the past 20 years that it has blinded some of these pundits. Overall that England team had more quality in it than France. That french defence was dodgy. The game was there for the taking in the 2nd half. You can't compare Southgates tenure to Hodgsons tenure and deem it successful because of that - Hodgson had nowhere near the depth of quality players to choose from than what Southgate has had. He's an excellent man manager but tactically falls short and England have had fortunate draws in the past couple of tournaments

    Gary is really talking out of his ass saying England was inferior in 2004 and 2006. England were the better team against Portugal both times but just lost on pens. 2nd time in 2006 they gave a good account of themselves playing with 10 men for 60 minutes. In Euro 2004, England had a legit goal disallowed by terrible refereeing. In 2006, Rooney's red was an awful decision. Never a red.
