Man, I would pay a weekly fee to have Gary McCord come back to golf broadcasting. Same goes for David Feherty when he was in his prime as an on-course guy, his skills just didn’t translate to the booth on the PGA tour (or LIV I’m assuming)

I’m surprised McCord is more forward looking than the 2 younger hosts. LIV still pays well for individual competitions. The team concept is an added bonus and to add spice to the overall tournament.

McCord is such a good guy - and unlike a lot of players has a healthy ego - He does not even mention that he is the guy who came up with the 125 exempt tour. That is how he got known to the public in the game - and then Frank Chirkanian recognized that he had a lot of juice amongst the players and knew he was topped out as a player and tried him out as an announcer. the rest is history.

I think the team component only works if you go the Formula 1 route, but the teams need to be based around the manufacturers, not the players. So you'd need Callaway, Titleist, Taylor Made, etc. to get on board to build teams. And then have midfield teams, Cleveland, Mizuno, etc. included as well. That being said I still have a hard time thinking it will ever work given how individualistic it is (the tennis comparison is spot on).

Sponsors stick around for as long as there are eyeballs on who they are sponsoring. Not all contracts are structured the same and unless the sponsors thought they were going to get negative public backlash by not dropping him immediately they are not likely to break their contract, buyout on the remainder, etc. So the real question is whether sponsors will renew with him when the contract term is up.

The cool part of the team aspect is that if it's a boring tournament and somebody's winning by a mile, It still makes players competitive, trying to have a great round for their team sake, As it's still quite a few dollars on the line for them.

If the club manufacturers jump in, it could change the game for LIV. Team Taylormade or the Korean team with lead sponsor of Titleist. It wouldn’t move the needle for me personally, but I could see how it would give more legitimacy considering how most golfers I know are so brand loyal.

Odd how you boys view LIV as TEAM Golf. Obviously they have teams, however winning and placing as an individual pays higher than the team pays. A viewer tunes in for the Individual championship, and the team aspect is a bit of a sidenote. Admittedly the names are a bit hokey. However, on the back 9 on Sunday both individual and team competition is quite compelling. And the best part, everyone is playing at the same time. This is vastly superior to the "morning" and "afternoon" tee times and switching around to different broadcast channels, and dealing with an insane number of commercials

PGA had massive power 60+ years ago, the realization that the players ARE the equity has finally eroded the PGA centralized power base incrementally over the years, and they (PGA) did not keep up.....the old school central power base was too ingrained, the PGA did not see this in time, even casual observers could see this was coming with the democratization of ideas and organizations and open source knowledge. How many folks knew the PGA tour was set up as a non tax paying not for profit organization ? Not until open knowledge and non profit watch dog websites did this even come to light. People are asking, "what is the PGA tour's added value to the system?" Not much, they organize tournaments and keep statistics and invest the retirement trust funds, pretty much it....and they are a licensing entity benefitting off the actual valuable equity base which is the player identity of themselves....players are the ones eyeballs want to see, literally not one person on earth cares about the entity of the PGA tour. Not one. By the way, Gary M is a gem, thinks outside the box, great guest. keep it going.

Competitors love the competition and golf is basically a solo competition. Now paired together in a team, that competition ramps up more so. When you play golf with your buddies, and you team up, golf becomes more fun, competitive and meaningful. I bet these guys feel that when they play teams with their buddies therefore hypocritical. The ironic thing is OWRG was a created for Norman by his agent IMG as a way to drive up appearances /fees - I guess it goes back longer than most people - so most don't remember that but it is true. Same thing about President's cup - that was a team event made for Norman because he was the Marquee player at the time and was not eligible for the Ryder cup - so the tour / CBS created that event basically for him.

As for the "no one's watching" LIV. I can only speak for myself, but I watch every possible week I can, every day of the tournament. I also went to one when they came within 3 hrs of me. I watch on the app and stream it to my big screen. I also have setup my tv browser to have the website as a favorite, so I watch that way sometimes. If I'm driving somewhere for the weekend, I run it on my phone and listen. I don't understand the push back on the team aspect. Everyone loves their teams in Basketball, baseball, football. Especially college. And don't forget from the players perspective, they played on teams in high school, and college. They love having people on "their side". The teams are only two years old, give it a chance to mean something. Expecting everything to be perfect out of the gate and expecting to have some sort of attachment to the teams that are only 2 years old is weird.

It's Year 3 of LIV, they had to go all in. It's do or die because contracts of other major players - Kopeka and DJ to name a couple, plus Phil is old and becoming more of a circus act. The attendance and ratings are pathetic. Maybe PGA numbers ratings are bad too -- but Pro Golf, like Pro Tennis, has a max audience. Music, cheerleaders and vibrant colors will not expand the sport. I think this process will just dilute a rather small audience.

Otherwise yes there is a definite ceiling for golf. And that post Tiger ceiling is considerably lower but expanding the market international does bring a lot more fans - but no way are they paying this type of money to sell tickets to tournaments.

The Saudi Arabian blood money is the root of all of this evil. Also - betting has fucked up everything - I don't think these guys have picked any kind of winner ever LOL. The analogy with tennis is perfect - some sports are meant to be individual. I love Coco Gauff but it barely even registers that she's number 1 in doubles. I love McCord and I wish he was still broadcasting but the notion of team equity and the market forces that are needed to create it are miles apart. Agree for sure on the appeal of team golf in LIV, it's just not there. But disagree completely in the Saudi's being the "root of all this evil". It may not be a popular opinion, but the PGA Tour created it, through complacency, and lack of foresight. If they actually listened to the grumblings behind the scenes and tried to evolve with modern times a bit more, none of this likely would have happened. The fact that Jay Monahan who is essentially the captain of the Titanic, is still leading the way as commissioner, is sad, very sad. That guy needs to go, and they need to start over with someone who has a strong backbone and vision for the future of the tour, and who can be trusted.

It shouldnt be the most popular sport on the front pages. It should have the slow pace. That's why I love watching golf from the PGA tour. No tv commercials either where I live. If you're going to LIV as a professional golfer that's already a millionaire, you're a greedy person that sacriface playing golf at the highest level and how it should be played. Team golf makes sense only between nations or continents like we have with Ryder Cup which also have a long tradition and history. The LIV product absolutely sucks. Who the f.. is team Smash?? No interest at all. And where's the talk about Saudi sports washing and human rights??

No easy answers here but know this PGA tour! I do not watch golf for just anyone! I watch golf to see the best on the PGA tour! Because the PGA tour is the established standard for golf worldwide! That is your revenue stream! You are the standard and your attitude should be "next man up" ! The answer is simple, Stay focused on player development based on who is the best player and quit trying to pandor to a story line or flavor of the day! Golf is an individual sport and that is a fact. Younger players today strive for the PGA tour! It is that fact that developed players like Jack, Lee, Arnie, Phil, VeJay,, Ian, Tiger Nick, etc. Take action now and make a statement to the rest of the world and this problem will go away because the LIV billionaires will eventually put their money in something that makes them more money and LIV is a loser from the word go!

Colt and the guys who are holding on to PGA are going to be left behind. With Jon Rahm going to LIV with his own team plus the other golfers he will pull with him team golf is here to stay. This is the tipping point LIV is the now the big dog

I work as a Marshall at a golf course and play with a broad spectrum of golfers from 25 to 80 and I could be wrong but I think this next year the viewership will grow in areas of Asia and Australia with their expansion in those areas. I mostly watch LIV and the majors and stuff like the Hero last week. Now that some of my buddies know about the CW they are starting to watch. Most didn’t even know about 58 shot on LIV. Golf Central and network coverage is afraid
