Totally agree - Gary completely downplays his significance on the PGA tour. He is the person who came up with the 125 exempt tour after all. That was a complete game changer. Peter's assessment of the current status of the tour was excellent.

I come from a golfing family. My uncle was head pro at LACC for 30 years 1930-60. My father was a professional caddie with 4 victories as well as on the all world Navy golf team in the 50’s. My brother and I each have city golf titles and I am now 75 and I don’t even watch golf except for majors. I tape tournaments and if I’m interested I may watch the last nine of a tournament.

I was in and around Professional golf for 40+ yrs. The administration of the game has always been more interested in their personal status than the game or state itself. It was painfully obvious that when Tiger came along - all kinds of money, fame came along everyone decided they were brilliant - and sat back collected checks, and patted each other on the back. I remember saying this is not going to live forever - what do we do - to build on this? - Crickets , the caretakers of the tour played the violin while Rome is burning. Consequently, I only watch majors, can't remember the last time I was interested in a weekly tour event.

The problem with Nike golf apparel is that it is not high quality and is over priced. I’m on the golf course in SWF five days a week. I rarely see the swoosh and never the TW logo. Where I can find the product is at Goodwill and the Big Box discount stores.

totally agree - however I would suggest you see if you can look up Phil Knight's college thesis that became the framework for Nike. The premise was that they could have goods ( shoes primarily) made cheaply in china - and aggressively market and promote them - and it could make money. yeah the motto was by athletes for athletes but it was always about low quality, disposable products. that has always been true

I’ve been watching golf since the early 1960’s. I’m 68 now and still love playing and improving my game. I never pulled for any golfer to win, just enjoyed the competition and being amazed at their ability to hit a golf ball. There are only a couple of tour players I even have any respect for now and if I watch TV golf it is to see the golf course. Your local pro is the important golf professional in your life. If competitive professional golf ceases to exist it won’t affect me that much.

I started playing golf at 7 in 1962, in Scotland. I love the game and what it has taught me about myself (and playing partners). I deeply resent professional golf being bought out by immoral govts (LIV & DP). I will be less likely to watch pro golf.

@@lauriebarns9901 Great comment. My ancestors came from Scotland and England. There is a club pro here where I live in Iowa whose father, Gus Moreland, was a contemporary of Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead. He regularly bested them in tournaments as a junior and young adult amateur. They spoke very highly of his skills as a player. He ended up forgoing Professional touring golf in the 1930’s to make a better living in his Father in Laws business. He is in both the Texas and Illinois golf Hall of Fame. Became a club pro back in Texes after retiring in the early sixties. His son became a touring pro and is a great friend of Lee Trevino before leaving the tour to be a club pro. Those are the “Golf Professionals” I revere. They are the backbone of recreational golf for the masses. “Professional Golfers” are amazing players and are fun to watch perform, but too many of them have lost touch with “the game.” Just my viewpoint, many will disagree and I accept that.

I am astounded that in 2024 the Golf Channel, NBC and CBS executives haven't figured out that most people that watch golf on TV would much rather watch the front view where they can see what the pro is doing in their swing instead of looking at their gluteus maximus as they put the tee in the ground. The pro tracer is interesting but amateurs want to see the front view where they can learn something to work on at the range.

I don’t begrudge most of those guys who left for LIV with so much money they are getting I would probably do the same thing. But as a fan I won’t be watching, I’d rather spend my time playing.

that is an absurd oversimplification, what really happened was the Bush Sr cut the defense budget at the end of the cold war. Subsequently, most of southern California was loaded with extremely talented engineers with no place to ply their trade as all the defense contractors instituted massive layoffs. So enough of them were around that had an interest in building golf clubs that were better suited for their purpose. As the baby boom generation aged it naturally transitioned into more golfers - and the making of clubs that made bad players better became a big business. If you start making serious money - the suits are going to show up - and ruin everything - that is essentially what has happened to golf. It's what got me out. Being successful - brought too much attention - and I was inundated with a whole bunch of experts to tell me how I could do what I was doing 24 X 7, 365 and make even more money - for my masters. Its just greed - its always greed that ruins good things.

  • @tonysmario817

well, chalking it up to greed is an oversimplification as well...but the correct one. the problem is that greed is not working since they ruined golf and made it the most boring, homogenized version of itself in history!! they never anticipated that it was the simple neutral equipment that made golf what it was, and made the talent so interesting...the tournaments as well, since driving the ball used to be such a vital part of scoring, and a player could go from birdies to bogies just by losing the driver swing on a few holes. courses challenged pros to play every club...now they seem to be able to score only with a wedge in their hands, or an iron to a par 5. that is what is absurd. simply shorten and tighten the courses...that would do it. ban the novelty gear in professional golf...that won't happen because of the money. our only hope is to create a different tour. the money will flow as soon as the excitement of golf is returned to the viewer. @@pjpredhomme7699

I am astounded anyone watches golf any more. The tour has been sanitized and homogenized. It's boring. The players are boring. The play is boring. Just spray 350 yd bombs anywhere, pull out a wedge and plop onto the green. Some players seem to spend more time in the gym than the course. I haven't watched more than a handful of holes in over a decade. I don't give a rat's ass about any of the current crop of cookie-cutter players.

I think a lot of people are backing off of watching golf. I know I have. I used to tune in every week. Now I don't care AT ALL about watching golf. Just a bunch of spoiled brat millionaires who NEVER have enough money. I don't blame the sponsors for leaving. The last tournament I watched was last year's Masters. Probably the only one I will watch this year too. I will just play golf instead, but at this point I'm done watching it. Congratulations Greg Norman. You destroyed pro golf completely. Nobody gives a shit about LIV.

I couldn’t have said it better, I feel exactly the same as you. I will say that I do still watch ladies golf.
